I saw this film when I was 16...I wish I could go back and experience for the first time again. It blew me away. It started my appreciation for screenplays. This, Pulp Fiction, and the Social Network are the best screenplays to come out in the last 20 years.
I agree, just not with the Social Network part. Found it quit underwhelming tbh, and i would never compare it's qualities (or lack thereof) to masterpieces like Pulp Fiction and American Beauty. Way different leagues.
I honestly don’t even know what the Social Network is but yes American Beauty & Revolutionary Road (both phenomenally directed by San Mendes) are a breathtaking look at the dull saddening life of american suburbia. One of my other favorites, both screenplay & film, would have to be ‘Requiem for a Dream’ which is also a terrifyingly truthful look at life.
What a wonderfully dark, twisted movie.. LOVED it! I've seen it over 10 times, maybe more, and I get something new out of it each time. Great performances and seeing this movie really made me stand up and realize Chris Cooper's talent for the first time. He should've been nominated too!
I passed on this movie at a theater in Myrtle Beach. I thought it was some sort of teen comedy. Saw it a few months later in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. Walked outside in the warm breeze and I feel like it was a life-changing experience. I know, sounds weird, but it's true.
@durdherd well its only a great movie to the people who actually undersand it lol, its actually a difficult movie because so many plots n twists are in the story but after watching it for a while u just wanna watch over n over again, i just watched it last night (again)
I think the main reason people dislike this movie is since the author was mean to the characters, not really giving them any admirable qualities except for Lester.
This is such a beautiful movie. An absolute masterpiece. When I list my favourite movies most are pretty violent, like goodfellas or taxi driver. This is the exception though. It is such a deep and meaningful movie. The acting, script, and especially the soundtrack are all amazing and compliment each other well.
Christopher Townsend My wife and daughter think I'm a loser. My daughter hates me and rejects me as a model. My job is boring, pointless and sucks. My wife is unfaithful, fucks with other men. Nobody likes me, everybody hates me, I'm a Verlieriner. I hate myself and I hate my life. And you:How do you feel like Lester Burnham?
I feel like my life is boring,I have very little equal rights and I also see people around me doing whatever they want and I don't say nothing about it and I feel like I don't have a lot of equal rights as other people and I have suppressed sexuality around others.
+wolfbockwolfbock But you not seem to be interested in changing your situation. I mean, I'd not live like you do. The only thing we really own is our live and although we are not completely free and able to do what we want, our decisions make our life so special. You can decide to quit your job. Do start somewhere new. You can decide not to be like Letter Burnham.
I've seen this film on HBO and on Netflix through my dads negative eye and I personally really like it because I feel like Kevin Spaceys character in the movie but my dad HATES this movie because it's boring and negative and has dysfunctional families.
its not about that, its about midlife crisis for people in their 40's, and 50's, and about growing up as a teen, THAT is what the movie is about. Nothing more, nothing less.
+Christopher Townsend obviously :-) I think its a movie with a positive message. That midlife crisis and the problems teens have is something that comes along with life, and that, though painfull, it will always turn out for the best, it only takes time, and pain to see and feel that. Thats one of the beautifull messages in the movie. A feeling that, whatever happends, everything will eventually turn out fine, even if the road is really painfull.
+SimplyLimbo Try explaining that to my father. As far as he's concerned it's a movie about a dysfunctional family and a father who gets blown off at the end for no reason.
+Christopher Townsend Thats what i thought 2 when i first watched it, lol. And i think for a lot of people. And maybe ur father is reaching his midlife-c and recognize things in it, but isnt ready to accept it yet ;) i dont know ur father afcourse, but i think its better the next time u explain movies to him, instead the other way around, since ure the one who catched the message in the movie ;-)
This film is a true masterpiece, I would look at it a million times and it would never get tired, it's perfect, it has nothing wrong with it!
I can’t see anyone besides Spacey in this role - perfect “ordinary man” who has a total mind shift - I cried at the end.
Wendy F
It was the role he was born to play... the creep

there a definitely better screenplays in the last 20 years than the Social Network. (although it is a great movie)
best screenplay in the last 20 years is memento by Christopher Nolan, IMO

Fun fact. That plate throwing into the wall, that wasn't in the script, Annette & thoras reaction was genuine.
one of the best movies and most touching i ever watched
Kevin and the cast did a glorious job in this masterpiece
He ad- libbed throwing the plate of asparagus, that's why the reactions of Carolyn and Janie are so genuine. He is a brilliant man.
alexis maldonado this aged poorly
Wow, I've never heard of anyone hating it. Everyone I know absolutely loves this film. It's in my ten best of all time movies.
