3 Chicken Viruses To Avoid: Why marek's disease in chickens is so dangerous!

  • Why marek's disease in chickens is so dangerous! I try hard to keep my chickens healthy, happy and stress free. Feeding them everything they need to stay healthy is a huge, huge part of preventing diseases. As with any living thing on the planet, prevention is way better than treating the disease, but from time to time it happens so here are the three most common diseases.

    I had a hen with mareks before she survived the first time. I had to teach her how to walk again but a few months ago she got it again and sadly past away. She was the nicest hen I ever seen and still is to this day.

    Thanks for the great video.
    I am going through the nightmare of Marek's right now.
    I adopted a trio from a neighbor and unknowingly have infected my flock.
    It couldn't come at a worse time of the year either because cleaning feels almost impossible in 20*F or below weather. Everything is just frozen here.
    I have never felt such defeat with my animals because the disease is so brutal & quick to kill.
    I have learned some hard lessons for sure.

      Sorry for a late reply, but in my community of chicken-owners, we usually say:
      "Never buy a live chicken from another coop!" better to buy eggs that you can hatch yourself.

    I live in Southern California and our chickens are being "plagued" with Virtulant Newcastle Disease. The state is having to cull entire flocks if one chicken in the flock tests positive for it. There is a protocol for how to decontaminate to prevent the spreading, warnings against moving chickens, etc. but people often don't know or don't follow and it's spreading city by city, county by county. We are surrounded by outbreaks and a case was found in a nearby city. Everyone is holding their breath in my area as it hasn't yet reached us. If you love your chickens and they are a part of your pet family, this is very heartbreaking.

    Spraying vinegar water will NOT kill Merriks. We lost our best momma chicken to it. I held her in my arms as she passed after the vet gave her the shot to be put down. Its not funny. Its Highly contagious. Not everyone will get sick and pass but if one has it they All have it. Consult a Vet ASAP if your bird gets a limp wing or they lose function in their legs one at a time.

    I have a chicken that appears to have had mareks disease - one leg not working, then other one not perfect, couldn't stand or move around much - but she didn't go off feed and I kept on own in a cage for 3 weeks with clean water and chick crumbles (with antibiotic). she is now back walking. The toes on the first leg that went still don't spread quite properly. No sign of improvement for first 2 weeks. Ihave had others that die from similar...but usually find them too late. Do you think this would be mareks disease? or could it be something else?

    Ok Becky, I have a couple questions I didn't hear answered in this video. First of all say I have laying Hens and feeder chickens total chicken 50. I keep feeders separate from laying Hens but say I find one chicken with either type of pocks virus. After removing that one chicken should I 100% check all other chickens? Or maybe just to be on the safe side go ahead a start watering all the chickens with the Apple Cider Vinegar mix or is there an issue with the vinegar? I didn't hear you say if you find one after removing it what about the rest to me it doesn't sound safe to waste time and slowly keep an eye on the other birds I would think you would want to react right away in some manner. Then as far as treating the Hen house for 6 weeks with the 50/50 mix wouldn't that create a bad insect problem possibly even termites because Apple Cider vinegar attracts insects big time

    Becky, I bought a flock of peeps from a tractor supply store in Bowling Green Ohio. Some of the birds were infected with Marek's disease. I've isolated two chickens that have paralyzed legs but used my own supplements to nurse them back from death but the paralysis is still there and both chickens are eating well but I know they have no quality of life and I must destroy them, Sadly. It's hard coming to terms with killing them now as they seem to enjoy each other's company and are both eating together. ❤ today I found a batam, part silky with a large hard lump mass on its left upper thigh, it seems there's no end to this as all of my 40+ chickens were raised together. 😢

    Fowl pox is also transmitted by mosquitoes and other biting insects. Our birds came down with the virus very quickly after being introduced outside as they were not inoculated. Luckily, they all survived. We have lots of mosquitoes in our area and much more prevalent after dusk.

      With all that going on, you will have to build a sturdy wooden hen house and a strong fully enclosed run. Keep in mind, Chickens stress easy and when hens are stressed they don't lay well. Pick a quite shady (dark shade for the hen house) spot in your yard and give it a try. Go to my website Beckyshomestead.com then click Chickens. Home & Garden Hobbies for Home Edders if your only getting 2 chickens there are a lot of sturdy coops at tractor supply or other places that carry chicken coops they are pretty small but they have enough room for 2 chickens to be happy and healthy

    Watching the movie on Prime and Scott is cutting out the nesting box but you’re baking something. Is this an audio issue with prime or a silly editing mistake? Either way. Love the movie. Backyard Chickens 101 🐓

    Hi Becky. I love your videos and have learnt so much from watching them. One of my young hens had the external fowl pox at 4 months. She recovered well. About a month later, another young hen (5months) fell ill and refused to eat. I'm wondering if she contracted the internal fowl pox. Poor thing seems so miserable and needs to be fed using a syringe into her mouth. It has been 2.5 weeks already. Do you think she has z chance to live or is it better to just cull it to end her misery?

      Is she getting any better at all? Maybe blend up some meat and water to feed her. It sounds like she has the internal type to me☀️❤️☀️

    BECKY,,That was a super great video!!!
    I have a question for you and I hope you can answer it......What is it with apple cider vinegar? It's used for worms and different viruses flu 's. And white vinegar for cleaning coops and it kills all kinds of different bugs.
    But what is in the apple cider vinegar that works so well? I don't get it. And why is it only the organic kind that works on all this stuff??? Thank you ..Linda in Florida 🌴🌴

      Organic apple cider vinger has mother...it is not sterilized. Therefore all the micro good stuff is there that does kill the illness is available.

What’s the most humane way to put her down I don’t want let her just starve because I do feed her she will not eat. This just plain sucks you get attached to these little girls.thanks Scott

    Chloramphenicol is very good for treating the diphtheroid (internal) phase of chicken pox. For the Bronchitis I had great results using LINCOMYCIN - SPECTINOMYCIN.

    I just got an UVC lamp for home to kill bacteria and viruses. I don't have chickens (yet) but it's recommended for other things like chicken coups and pet areas. Do you have any experience with that? What about colloidal silver for chickens?

    • @roxannejones7959
      @roxannejones7959 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Iwona, UV light can be beneficial, but then again, natural UV light from the sun is good too. I would not use colloidal silver because of the possibility of silver building up in the tissues especially the heart valves. There are a few people allergic to silver and that could be harmful.

    • @iwona4685
      @iwona4685 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right, but how do you get the UV light from the sun inside the chicken coup?

    • @iwona4685
      @iwona4685 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aside from the few people allergic to silver, honestly I have never heard of such person, can colloidal silver help chickens?

    • @roxannejones7959
      @roxannejones7959 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol. Just affix your UV light up in there, but know it can't prevent everything. Chickens are pretty tough really. Good food, clean roomy space, fresh water and there ya go.
