    I am a native Tumblrite so here's my opinion of it. Tumblr, overall, is great for building relationships. it's very much "anti social media" because how many followers you have doesn't matter that much and it isn't even visible. ok yeah, if you have more followers then more people are going to see your post, but the algorithm won't boost you, because there is none. As you said, it's very fandom focused. People will go ham over any depiction of their blorbos. It also encourages weirdness and not giving a shit, so you could fill your blog with reblogs and shit posts as well as your art, but most artists have a sideblog for their art so people who are just there for their art have a place to go. HOWEVER something i want to correct you on is that tumblr has actually been making some pretty shitty updates to cater to the 1% of immigrants instead majority who don't want tumblr to change on such a large scale. Another negative is that tumblrinas, overall, can be quite annoying and if you don't get used to it, you'll grow bitter and get bullied of that site. They're very much peace and love on planet earth. it's not something that bothers me, but i didn't grow up with steven universe so i'm not exactly about all that. I should also mention that tumblrinas are just as capable of having meaningless, puritanical arguments like twitter users.

      the one issue i see w this comment is that there's not much of an ''overall experiece'' to refer to, you can very easily cater and filter ur own experience by what kind of people u surround yourself with/ fandoms u interact with, the tags you filter out, people you block(wich is pretty much considered selfcare there so no one will torch u about it), etc.

    6:36 To add, Tumblr can absolutely be a multi-fandom thing! You’ve just gotta create seperate blogs. The people who follow you for your Sonic art probably wont interact with your Deltarune art, UNLESS you make a seperate blog for Deltarune, in which you’ll get exclusive fans for that fandom only. It sounds like a lot to manage once the blogs pile up, but as long as you aren’t focused on a “consistent schedule” for all of them(nobody on tumblr cares about that), it’s pretty chill.

    As someone who still posts on instagram, the new update sucks. They removed the 'newest' section in hashtags and replaced it with 'newest top post' which honestly imo does not make sense what was the point of that. And bcus of that, small artists have an even harder time in trying to grow their acc unless they CONSTANTLY post reels and joining trends in hopes that it might get picked up by the algo.
    And I also heard from some art moots of mine that Reddit is a great way to advertise your commissions (thru subreddits like r/artcommissions and r/hungryartists) Though you'd have to build up your karma points first. I have yet to try advertising there but just wanted to let you know incase you wanna try it for yourself! :]]

      I will chime in since i’ve been a new artist on instagram recently and have a few things to add, this new update really fucked with getting new people to see your art especially if you’re a new account, if people aren’t actively following the hashtag and it shows up in their feed it can go completely unnoticed, i’ve noticed this recently as my new growing account stopped growing and would only be shown to my same followers over and over, 2, unless you’re in a bustling active community or fandom it’s VERY hard to get people to see your art especially if it’s oc related or such because people just don’t really care for it most of the time (i suppose this could be every social media but instagram too) NOT TO MENTION! Just how annoying this new update is, not only is it pointless but it makes it really hard to find new artists in small sub-communities in communities, i used to love scrolling the new posts just to see what people had made and now it’s not possible, hashtags are practically pointless and making reels is one of the only viable ways to get off the ground on that app, it SUCKS most of the time
      That’s all i had to add to it, instagram has a VERY VERY shitty algorithm for artists so it’s definitely not the best option imo but if you’re reading this trying to figure out what platform to use you can use this advice as you want

      Can confirm Reddit is a really good way to go. I've been posting on r/doodles and will get 5 times more likes than Instagram a lot of the time. Plus I get more comment engagement.
      On Instagram I barely even have 115 followers after 2 years and my highest liked post was a reel with ~400 likes. Pretty sad, but to be fair my art is mostly random sketches and doodles. Before the update I can sometimes get 25 likes on a post if lucky tho. Now only people following me like my post and most of my followers are inactive or bots. 😭 So it's back to 3-6 likes again.
      The only thing about Reddit is that it's very hit or miss, and anything fandom related should be posted in fandom subreddits instead of random art subreddits. You can still do both, but the fandom subs would appreciate it more. ;)

  • @matuili2633
    @matuili2633 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +107

    So basically, here's what I understood.
    The two highest-rated social media sites were Tumblr and TH-cam, BUT, these two sites have significant differences, and cater to different kinds of artists.
    *Tumblr:* Mostly for fandom artists, who want to interact with others more directly and don't want to/can't maintain a consistent upload schedule. Being consistent isn't so important because Tumblr doesn't have an algorithm, so reach is mainly based on reblogs (an equivalent to retweets, for Twitter people).
    *TH-cam:* Can be for fandom artists, but it's best for artists who focus on their own work/stories/OCs, which do not pertain to a certain fandom. Also, since the algorithm has a lot of influence over what content gets reached, you must maintain a consistent upload schedule, otherwise you won't grow.

    I originally was a tumblr artist when i started out, along with dA (like, 2012 era) and eventually moved to instagram. I had gotten a very decent following, around 5k followers, and something happened irl so i didnt post for a month or two, and when i came back, every single one of my posts would give me negative followers. I would barely get any likes compared to before. Like, id consistently get 100-300 likes each post, but it turned into 10-20. This was like 2016, 2017.. it hurt my self esteem so bad i stopped drawing for a year. When i came back, i started posting to Twitter, and I liked that a lot more because there was no pressure to post constantly. And if you go through it the smart way, you basically see no drama at all, just other people who post only art. a good tip if you want to post on social media is to get comfortable with how your art feels to you first. dont start posting on social media if you still have the mindset that the amount of views/likes/follows/commissions line up with your art quality. bc thanks to shitty algorithms, that is absolutely not what it means. you will have to be fine with not having much engagement for a while. and on most sites, you likely wont get commissions unless you've already built up a bit of a following of people that like your art. so honestly, literally just draw what makes you feel good and try and post consistently, and eventually you'll start to get somewhere.
    remember that its different for everyone, and the algorithm is like a lottery game. dont compare yourself to friends or others that have already built up a following, bc honestly, the internet picks things at complete random to blow up.
    so pls, just hang in there- social media is a tough place and can tear your mental health apart. if you feel stuck with all these sites bc nothing's working, take a small break and just draw for yourself and maybe some friends for a while. please trust me when i say that just because you dont get reach on social media does not mean ur art sucks or people hate you. (if ppl hated ya, you would definitely know thanks to cancel culture.) people just havent had a chance to see your work yet, and patience is really key.

      @artgoing 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Definitely. I started on DA with this mindset (I was like- 10 at the time so I was definitely more interested in being popular for my art than enjoying it myself)
      I posted constantly, yet no matter what I did, I’d only get 1-3 likes. At first I didn’t really care cause I don’t think I realized how much “likes and engagement” mattered to people. Seeing how many people had that kind of treatment, it made me feel like my art wasn’t good.
      Stopped posting for a really long time and when I finally got back to it (improving all the while) I started posting again- this time not really caring and using DA more as a storage place. I went from 60 followers to 136 followers in a month(?)
      Tags help a lot, if anyone decides to use DA. Spamming tags seems stupid but it really helps the algorithm.

There's actually a way to filter the phrases people can use in your comments in the settings under "Hidden Words" and then "Manage custom words and phrases" that lets you write a list of words that people can't comment, I've put in the common bot phrases and that's been pretty effective for me.
    I've also been considering getting a Tumblr, so I might get one thanks to this video! :D

      SERIOUSLY! i post my art on insta sometimes, and every damn time i post, there's gonna almost always be a bot. commenting and liking my post. and also, I reccomend getting a tumblr! although since tumblr is more fandom based, original oc art doesn't get that much attention unfortunately. I posted my oc art there and no one batted an eye :/ but that's just one of the cons, imo. the algorithm is definitely way more forgiving there instead of instagram.

    I feel like there basically isn't any good site for artists right now. I've been holding off on posting my art for literal years, I recently finally caved after seeing people's reaction to my work at an exhibition (and after my friends kept begging me to), I was genuinely so touched and just want people to be able to enjoy my work and maybe build a name for myself but with all the recent ai stuff, toxic trends and horribly run sites I feel like I can't really move anywhere. So far I'm only on tumblr but genuinely have zero reach there, probably since most people are more active on twitter instead. Seriously, what a horrible time to be an artist on the internet. I can't even imagine what artists whose livelihood depends on their socials must feel like right now

    tiktoks algorithm LOVES it when you post frequently and consistently which leads to burnout and churning out low quality context

      yeah, believe me, a friend and I have been through something similar! my friend kind of had a fight with another artist, first they were kind of inserting their character in some of her au's in a way that didn't respect her stories, then she criticized their oc calling her a mary sue, and after that the person simply created a hate for my friend and started to doxx her through her other social networks! or at least tried. then they tried to be my friend but as soon as i started pointing out the shit they did they started attacking me too! wishing harm to me and her in a very pathetic way. I responded as best I could, just saying it was pathetic and not getting to me. they kept doing this when anonymous in my ask box to a point I had to report them! then they stopped. it was really crazy. my friend is fine now, she's been doing some comics with a friend of hers, we don't talk much, but as long as she's fine, that's what matters.

    I want to start actually being active about posting my art, as ive had a tendency to just. Not post or even draw anything (executive dysfunction levels: catastrophic). But I am always just so picky about the platform. I like Tumblr cause I don't have to subject myself to algorithmic content- nor do i have to make myself follow a trend or a certain way to do things for ppl to find my art.
    I like that tiktok has more reach but it kinda feels like selling my soul (also im terrible at technology and idk how to make videos awgdhdj). Plus coupled with the toxicity (on twitter too), idk if i wanna do that.
    Instagram also practically has no good way to reach ppl nowadays either.
    Reality is, i think i probably just need to get off my ass and be more willing to do the whole short video scheduled content awhsjdhdjdh

    • @deltalunaris
      @deltalunaris 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'm in the same boat personally (dysfunction included, unless it's art for others lol), and I really don't like that shorts are becoming the norm. I'm having to accept that I'll probably have to do them anyway, but it feels extremely counterintuitive for what my creative vision is. What hurts worse is that platforms are proactively encouraging the format for the sake of views, clicks, user engagement, etc.
      Art is ever evolving, but this feels like intentional pigeonholing. Any one of us who has been in a 'do art for work not fun' mindset knows how soul destroying it eventually becomes. How much art will you be able to produce in a short time before you suffer burnout? Nobody can be an organic being with needs and a pump-out machine at the same time.
      Always remember that art is the greatest form of revolution. Be wary of those who seek to bleed us of our ink, for profit and for control over our medium.

    I'd say with Tumblr it's a little challenging for newer artists/just posting on it, as much as I do enjoy that the site isn't follower based and its fandom oriented; it HAS to be a popular/active fandom (or one that's well known) which sucks. I only say this because I have a friend who's art is so edible but the only posts that blow up are the amanda the adventure ones rather than her Powerpuff girl ones when they take the same amount of effort.
    And this isn't trying to say that every post has to blow up but when 2 posts made for one fandom and multiple for another are made and only the two of the more popular/active fandom gets attention, you see what I mean.
    (This could even go for me, Piconjo cover redraw (FNF) got more attention than an oc-based one for BATIM; it has to be something people are actively searching for ykwim).

    • @T.JacobMain

Even something that you made years ago will probably continue getting engagement if people continue to reblog it, so it’s great for artists who are busy with work or school :3

    I used to be an instagram artist. At first, things were pretty okay, but it felt really lonely on there, and the only "friends" i had on there were people from school. But then i ditched insta and moved to twitter, again, things were fine at first, i made more friends, found an amazing community i can call home, and i even met my partner though twitter! But after the countless terrible updates elon made to it, mixed with the constant toxicity and the fact that my most popular art was something that kinda started drama, and i had to delete it. I had enough, and I'm now just a discord artist
    Though I'm gonna be real. Being a discord artist is great! It's just me sharing my art in these little spaces that make me feel comfortable. Yes, i don't have as big of following on Discord, but honestly, having friends that i can just show my silly art to and they'd give fun feedback is enough to make me happy.

    Ever since I got Instagram back in 2017, my like numbers never increased because I don't post often. I always get 10-20 likes per post, sometimes less.

    Tumblr has become a comfort zone for me, I can talk to people who share the same interests as I have, I've met a lot of friends and I've met a lot of nice people, the latest live update bothers me a lot because of the live covers that they appear to me to be very... questionable... and it's also very annoying to research a specific topic and all of a sudden there's a porn account full of random tags just to get the attention of specific groups! it annoys me!! but other than that and some toxic people I've met there, it's definitely the best site to post my art, fanfics (yes, I'm cringe) and comics and make different blogs. Definitely recommend, don't let negative comments about the site affect your opinion. I also thought it was bad at first until I started posting there!

    Honestly, I kind of just want to make a lot of independent projects before going on to TH-cam, save them up, and then upload them on like the start of my college days or somethings like that.

    Honestly, I'm already on Insta and thought Insta was the best at the time. But, now I can see I might wanna post my art to Twitter for more. Thanks.

    i post my art mainly on tumblr, discord, and deviantart, but it might just be my shitty luck or fairly young age that causes Me Not Getting Any Feedback Or Attention On My Art. it really is a hit or miss no matter where you post, i think, cuz ive got a lot of friends who have the same experience. i really wanna try toyhouse, but most of what i draw is fandom art. so i am very confused on what to dooo,,

    Twitter and tumblr are the places I find easiest to post fanart
    Instagram is the easiest place for me to post OG art

    This is exactly the video I needed to convince me to leave dA for good. The site already took a nosedive when they "revamped" it and removed custom HTML for user pages. The AI thing was just another nail in the coffin.

    How good is Art Station?
    I think i heard something AI related before but, i just wanted to know if I should move. Because i do want to be more than just a fandom artist
