  • What tools does your community use to communicate?
Most communities mention Messenger, WhatsApp or Telegram, because we tend to use the tools we know. This is the 'you use the tools you know' tendency. However, these technologies seem particularly unsuited for community communication.
Åsa Isacson researches how communities can use digital layers for their own purposes. If you want to find out what she's learnt so far - and get some advice on technologies that might fit you - check out this blogpost: / upgrade-your-community...

Wow! Very happy to know about your PhD research. I have been watching a number of videos and resources on intentional communities. I very much would like to know more about your research. I would be extremely happy if I get to interact with you if you can spare some time in the future. I have a future vision to start an intentional community somewhere in South Asia. 🙏

I find this very interesting and seeing newer communities integrate Discord, etc. is pretty exciting. East Wind had zero tech, if you weren't physically on the farm you may as well not exist. No voting, being able to attend meetings remotely, etc. You could give your vote to a proxy, but not quite the same. Definitely used as a political weapon (rescheduling of meetings, etc.) at times. Also, meeting and vote participation was low in general, I wonder if a digital infrastructure would help with that.

I definitely have seen this trend of that 'if you are not physically there you may as well not exist' and how it sometimes unfortunately can be weaponized. I find it interesting how digital layers potentially could facilitate access, overview and participation - three aspects that can translate to a change in who actually gets to take part in and decide on the shaping of a community.
