This could have been the " Revenge Of The Sith " of the sequel trilogy! This script is more than just decent. It's actually beautiful and heart warming. It's VASTLY superior to what we actually got in theatres which was a butchered live action adaptation of the Dark Empire comic book series from the Expanded Universe/Legends continuity.
This is also almost closer to Revenge Of The Jedi original script episode 6. Force Ghost of Yoda and Obi Wan involved to help Luke defeat Emperor and Vader.
Colin Treverrow's script was not perfect, but unlike The Rise of Skywalker, Duel of the Fates took risks and ultimately was satisfying. Next to Paul Dehn's rejected story outline for what became Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973), it's the best never-made SF film script of which I'm aware.
It hits all the beats from the past 2 movies, nothing is ignored. Everything made sense, especially the part of the Jedi. Moving from the past and Rey finding true balance within herself where feelings and emotions are not ignored but embraced. To me this was a perfect ending to the entire saga. Moving away from the Skywalker saga and starting fresh with new heroes and new stories to tell. No more Skywalker stories, because those are George Lucas' babies. That family has been through too much. Time to give the spot light to others.
@@jediryan9454 , yes, it wrapped up the trilogy well and showed that while it is advantageous to have a continuing story planned out beforehand, doing so is not absolutely necessary to land a consistent, coherent conclusion. There's also the Mario Puzo Superman script, which was extremely bloody and had gangsters as villains. It was rewritten, but Puzo still got a screenwriter co-credit as the first draft author. I always wanted DC Comics to make a comic of that script.
Oh my god amazing. I read the original script back when it was leaked, looked at the comic, back than unfinished, and now revisited it, just to see that someone made a movie, if you want to call it like that, of the comic. I really wish we would‘ve gotten this version over TROS

One of the Resistance said DARK SCIENCE ,CLONING. SECRET THAT ONLY THE SITH KNEW. This original script also not really good. Somehow Plagueis master still alive lol. And Ren kill him easily. Anakin's Force Ghost didn't appear or gave Rey guidance.
Somehow darksaber stealing by Knight of Rens? They kills Bo-Katan? How a nobody and ordinary bloodline can have lightning Force? Chris Terrio and JJ Abrams fix this problems and made better. Also we see Knight of Rens no have any single dialogue same just like in TROS. The amazing thing this script is Finn, Poe and Rose got a major roles.
I remember reading the script when it was leaked back in 2020 and I thought back then that this was a true saga ending film that gives us many incredible fan service moments in a way that feels natural and dictated by the story. This motion comic has only strengthened those feelings. Not getting to see this film will always be the biggest tragedy in Star Wars.
Yo this is outstanding.. I remember the script when it was leaked and liked it then.. in this form, with the score and narration.. makes me want it even more. This is the way it should had planned out.
Thanks! The vast majority of the audio is the work of Jamie Dew, who let me borrow his full cast audio adaptation of the script and fuse it with Andrew Winegarner's web comic (both linked out in the video description). I added in a few sound effects and a bit of score here and there, but they totally rocked it.

For all intents and purposes this should be canon. It takes everything we got from the other sequel movies and wraps up the saga way better than what we got in Rise of Skywalker.

And Leia was able to survive after using all her strength to connect Ben across galaxy while Luke die that is unfair. Beside Carrie Fisher is passed away before the script is complete.
Wow I absolutely love Colin's episode 9. The sequels would have actually felt like a coherent story with this plot. Thank you to everyone involved for making this, beautifully made! Must not have been easy
Really wish we would’ve received this story as episode 9. Never forget when I read this script and couldn’t even believe what a satisfying ending we almost received!
A decent first draft minus the poe and rey stuff. I love Rose’s part in this. they would still have had to change a lot due to Carrie Fishers passing. but After watching Jurassic Park Dominion, I have serious doubts that trevorow could have directed a coherent and moving final chapter. As for what we got ,JJ is a talented director but the story of TROS seems to be a list of missed opportunities, reactionary and puzzling decisions.
The Poe and Rey stuff is important in Rey finding the true balance within herself and with the force. To truly love someone and not fear it. She was able to let go of him and sacrifice her feelings to save the galaxy. Something that Anakin could not do. Also, he was the logical choice because Finn was with Rose. Also, the time jump was I believe 10 years or more. Which goes in line with what Lucas did in his past movies. So of course feelings could develop between them. But at the end, that wasn't the true meaning behind the romantic interest between them. It was to show that old days of the Jedi ignoring their emotions was wrong. To show you can't ignore something that is the most powerful emotion of all, love. To open the door for future stories involving romantic arcs with the Jedi and it not being taboo.
@@jurassicpark1fan920 I agree. However, I do wish we had the kids from the first Jurassic Park meet the kids from the first Jurassic World along with the others. That would’ve been pure perfection in my opinion.
I don’t think it’s confirmed but there are rumors that a lot of the most egregious parts of rise of Skywalker were studio demands after Solo bombed at the box office. I think the original premise has nothing to do with palpatine and works have brought a character from clone wars in as the villain (son of Mortis).
Honestly, the visual of Hux impaling himself on Mace's lightsaber in front of the Chancellors window as his fleet crumbles around him, is enough to make me wish this got made.
Same. Gave him a real reason for being so jealous of and hating Kylo Ren aside from just being a sniveling psychopath. The idea of someone who wants to badly to use the force for his own selfish ends but is unable to because of his own lack of talent and connection to it is awesome.
It’s flawed, but this was definitely the right direction post-Last Jedi. It closes the book on the new trilogy’s characters and mysteries in unexpected ways while linking things back nicely to both the originals and the prequels. The remnants of the Empire finally being taken down after a long, brutal, all-out assault on Coruscant (helped in large part by a full on stormtrooper rebellion) is a genuinely perfect conclusion to the “war” side of the saga. While I’m not crazy about Rey and Kylo’s stuff (feels a bit anticlimactic and confusing, and I really don’t like the Rey/Poe romance), with a few revisions this could have been great. Carrie’s death would have still hurt it, but not debilitatingly so. For all it’s flaws it still feels like it was written by someone who really knows and cares about Star Wars, which already puts it leagues ahead of the soulless monstrosity we got.
@@under_score3829 good question; I think I would probably tie their story more directly to what was happening at Coruscant. I’d also make the stakes clearer (what exactly happens if Kylo gets what he’s after). I also don’t like another last minute redemption before dying, I think maybe a better ending for Kylo would be to accept his actions were wrong and willingly turn himself in as a prisoner.
@@joaquinwaters1810 I once contemplated that Kylo-Ren could turn himself into a demagogue, spreading lies around the Galaxy that the Resistance is evil and framing them for some of the First Order's crimes, including the death of Han Solo and the order to destroy the Hosnian System. Kylo plays up the populist angle talking about how the Republic failed them and promising peace and prosperity to all. He even says "The Resistance is sly; they'll put ideas in your head to make you think they're your friends when in reality they're just trying to manipulate and deceive you" when really that's what he is doing. Then, in an effort to undermine Kylo, Hux gets his hands on security footage from Starkiller Base and helps the Resistance broadcast it to the Galaxy, right when Kylo is giving a speech in front of a jumbo tron in a plaza. All the citizens see the video of Kylo and Hux talking to Snoke in TFA about using Starkiller Base. Kylo desperately says "That guy in the suit is not me! That's a Resistance actor in a mask." Then they play the security video of Han and Kylo on the catwalk -- without his helmet, and everyone sees Kylo murder Han. Appalled, the citizens turn on Kylo, seeing him for the liar he is. Infuriated, Kylo ignites his saber and destroys the jumbo tron screen in a fit of rage, a callback to his tantrums in TFA. Then the Falcon appears in the sky and Rey, on a megaphone, says "Kylo-Ren, stand down." Kylo grabs the mic and yells "YOU TURNED THEM AGAINST ME!" Rey replies, "You have done that yourself."
Oooh that’s a really cool idea! I do like the idea of Kylo trying to push his so-called “liberation” from TLJ and use it to control the Galaxy. And it would make a lot of sense how he could amass so much power and so many followers so quickly
Absolutely agree. I'm a big Star Wars fan, and I literally like everything that I saw/read/played from this universe. THE ONLY exception is The Rise of Skywalker. This first draft of a script is ALREADY better than that shitfest, like you said. And also, yeah, I really don't like Poe/Rey as well. It feels very forced and I think like Finn and Rey would make a better couple.
exactly, like, this is just the paper version made by the writer alone, it would then go into consultations with other people, undergo tweaks and a more realized finished product and then on top of that a lot of clarity comes out during filming itself, and some things might've looked even better than in this comic the foundation is incredibly solid, Rise's foundation was "bring back the big bad and make him very evil with 1000 kyber powered & fully manned star destroyers he got out of his ass"
Nothing could have saved it. The last jedi was so out of place, so ridiculous, so full of comedy, this wouldn't have saved it. It was doomed from that movie onward. Great ending? sure But saving? no
This would not have saved the Sequel Trilogy. The Sequels were doomed from the moment George Lucas' original outlines were scrapped in favor of J.J. Abrams' soft reboot garbage. If Colin trevorrow was allowed to have his vision along with more time and resources we could have gotten a much better movie to end the sequel trilogy
A lot of the same beats that were in the actual movie appear in this script, but actually make sense. Lando showing up with a volunteer ships in the movie didn't didn't make sense because it was a undiscovered planet which required a special holocron to even navigate to; where as in this script Coruscant is a galactic capital that multiple hyperspace lanes lead to.
I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed it! It felt more like a natural continuation from TLJ and actually felt like a Star Wars movie over what we got with TROS!
So funny story, I never watched anything Star Wars, until a buddy of mine convinced me and since I had time I accepted. I knew very little things but nothing major, my friend gave me a timeline to watch so I watched everything in chronological order, the movies, animated shows, games and live action series. I also knew the sequel trilogy was not very well received by fans or at least that not many liked it, but when I got to it, honestly I liked Force Awakens and The Last Jedi while it has many flaws, I still somewhat enjoyed it, but then my friend told me to watch this with him, the Duel of the Fates, and watching it with him and seeing this conclusion, I actually clapped at the end and was left satisfied and I asked how bad is ROS and I saw it on my own, yeah thank God i saw Duel of the Fates first. So I consider this as the definitive ending to the Saga, even if it's flawed as well, much much better story, imo at least lol.
The fans that didnt like the sequels the last jedi and rise of skywalker would like this and the fans that did would like this more... This would save star wars..
This is my head cannon ending to the sequel trilogy. It perfectly wraps up how episode 9 should have been. I will never for give Disney or Kathleen Kennedy for passing up what could have been an epic finale.
I must say, friend, thank you and your team for all the work you have done on this wonderful piece. You have brought closure to the sequel trilogy in an amazing fashion. Keep creating, my friend, and stay safe!
In my head canon, this is the official finale and now I'm overall satisfied with what we got in the sequel trilogy. Fyi I was on board with the first 2 movies but ROS was such a glorious disaster. But now we got a satisfying end
Wow! this is so beautifully put together. Such care was taken in this and the voice actors did an amazing job. OMFG how did they not go with this and instead we got the tripe that is Episode IX smh. Thank you so so much for putting this together and bringing it to life in the way you have

The first becoming a true empire without the help of the finale order, kylo ren becoming like vader is perfect, hux trying to be a force user, brute troopers? Now this is good star wars to the trash we got in the rise of Skywalker. Duel of the fates is the superior script.
A satisfying version to be sure, and a fitting wonderful idea of a memory montage at the end celebrating the SW saga to wrap up the entire Skywalker arch
Thank you for creating this. I know the script was a rough draft and not without its issues but it’s leaps and bounds better than RoSW. Your hard work has given us a quality finale to the Star Wars Saga and it’s truly appreciated.
"Like any development process, it was only in the development that we're looking at a first draft and realizing that it was perhaps heading in a direction that many of us didn't feel was really quite where we wanted it to go." -- Kathleen Kennedy, on Trevorrow's script Always remember that Lucasfilm rejected this BEFORE The Last Jedi backlash. People blame critics of TLJ for Rise of Skywalker but Trevorrow was fired before TLJ came out. TLJ critics did not ask for Rise of Skywalker. On behalf of all TLJ critics, we would have preferred Duel of the Fates too.
I wanna see that, maybe as TV show or something, but people have to see the alternative version of the saga. It's too good to don't do this. EP9 wasn't really bad, but this is a little masterpiece, of course I mean your job, it's perfect buddy. Thank you for this. I'm so thankful ❤
Hmmm it’s definitely much better then what we got but I’m not a fan of certain parts. Kylo’s arc, how he just gives up at the end and Rey’s relationship with Poe. I feel so bad for Rose in the original, she was great here!
This one follows the initial direction they had for Kylo. He was supposed to be this anti-Vader, who starts as conflicted like Vader is in ROTJ, but ends as devoded darksider like Vader is in ANH. His redemption at the end is forced an unnecessary because of that, he should have died a villan in this script.
Honestly Joe, you are seriously underrated! Which is why I subscribed to your channel to help it grow. It’s seriously sad that more than 18K people watched this but there’s only 311 people subscribed
Man... I know it would never happen, but the script DID have a ten year in-universe time jump. The actors are young enough... they could still make it 😅
Could anyone really want to live or truly be forgiven after all the destruction he had done. He not only killed so many lives, which included his own father and the family of Rey. Sure he was a cool villain and character but coming back to the light as Ben Solo could not erase all the bad he had done. At least he would be imprisoned for life or put to death. Or be on the run, but that would not be a good ending to the Skywalker saga. Having Leia's son out there to continue the lineage. Disney needed to put to bed the Skywalkers and have Star Wars grow from that family.
@@jediryan9454 yes he could have, it’s his path to true redemption. To at the very least go out and do all he can before it’s truly is time to go. We never truly have seen that sort of character in Star Wars. See the show Angel for a good example of how that concept could work.

Man oh man. Finally just watched this. Thank you for putting this all together like this. I know this is based on a draft version of the script, but even so… with a little punch up, this would have been bonkers good! I’m stunned. So many awesome moments that honestly has me welling up and laughing out loud. Kylo sacrificing for Rey was my only true gripe here, but that could have been taken care of by the acting and a couple of minor additions. The rest of the ending though… beautiful and personal and it felt earned.
If this script became Cannon for Episode IX it would bring everything full circle to bringing back in a way the precursor to the Jedi Order that being the Jedai Rangers of Typhon back when even before the Old Republic started. The Jedai didn’t focus on just one aspect of the Force. They took in aspects of both the Ashla (light side) and the Bogan (dark side), and yet despite accepting both sides they still served the Typhon system much like the Jedi would serve the galaxy as a whole, much like what Rey would end up doing by the end of “Duel of the Fates”. instead of just Rey deciding to call herself Skywalker and just leaves the Star Was saga ending being up in the air. Duel of the Fates shows how through the Skywalker family and legacy brought about bringing balance to the Force.
Yeah I can’t get behind embracing both sides of the force in either circumstance. Dark side corrupts plain and simple. It represents hate. Is the message that only if we embrace love and hate we can bring peace to the galaxy. It doesn’t add up
@@brams9431 But both sides exist both in the universe and within us. What makes who we are is what we do with what we are given and what we are exposed to. This goes for both light and dark . Also fear, anger and aggression can be applied to good use in certain circumstances. It’s doing those things while keeping balance love, calmness, and being passive that makes the difference when it comes to bettering ourselves and bettering the universe. After all, how can one even know what light truly is without also having been exposed to darkness? How can one know what happiness truly is without also experiencing misery? How can one truly know what goodness is unless one is also living in a world that has evil in it? There can be no action if there is no opposite reaction.

I know Carrie died, but they could have said (in the opening crawl) Leia died from her injuries (being in space), and had Mon Mothma took her place. A few things would need to be changed (have Luke's ghost convince Kylo to spare Rey) but anything's better than writing the story around extra scraps of Leia footage from ep7. Anything's better than "They fly now" and "Somehow Palpatine returned" and Emperor killing himself with his own lightning. Unbelievable that they just tossed this great script in the bin, even if they didn't want Colin to direct.

We'll never know, but it's still a far better ending to the Skywalker saga than what we now have! A missed opportunity to go out in a high.
This is awesome, my only wish is that the artist added some filters to give it slightly off-register look like a vintage comic. It would have made it look more like a movie-adaption comic you would have seen back in the day!
A pure work of art. Most definitely better than the original Rise of Skywalker, any day! What doesn't Disney see in the Star Wars community? Made my day and many more.
This is much more thought out than episode 9 but there a few major problems 1. You can’t stop communications from all systems without the Galactic economy collapsing. They could just say that the first order has control of the holonet and that the Jedi temple beacon will broadcast to everything and the plot won’t change at all. 2. The resistance hiding on a secret jungle base and then escaping has been done like 3 times now. Just make it all out war between the new republic and the first order with each side contesting territory like the clone wars. 3. The finalizer has a Death Star laser out of nowhere, like not mentioned again or given any explanation. You can’t just have a new dearth star laser on a ship and give absolutely no explanation. 4. The Poe and Rey romance just comes out of nowhere and really shouldn’t be there.
The description says the original script was finished in 2016. That's before Last Jedi. Wonder if our favorite Johnson was supposed to set up the romance there. Since he went off the rails, they had to get rid of this since it wouldn't fit or thought they should at any rate. Oh and one ship with Death Star lasers is at least better than 30 thousand.
The way I understood it is that the first order indeed broke the galactic economy. There is poverty all over the galaxy and workers accept a life as a slave just to be brought somewhere where there is enough food. Divide and conquer was the strategy the first order applied and they accepted any negative consequences. I think they were afraid to repeat the mistake of the Empire.

Seeing Kuat on the big screen may just have been worth the price of admission alone, too.

For all intents and purposes this should be canon. It takes everything we got from the other sequel movies and wraps up the saga way better than what we got in Rise of Skywalker.
Sadly, the mandalorian season 3 would disagree with you

They had a plan all along, J.J Abrams, Rian Johnson, Colin Trevorrow
Wow I absolutely love Colin's episode 9. The sequels would have actually felt like a coherent story with this plot. Thank you to everyone involved for making this, beautifully made! Must not have been easy
Really wish we would’ve received this story as episode 9.
Never forget when I read this script and couldn’t even believe what a satisfying ending we almost received!
I have been patiently waiting for something like this ever since reading the treatment. I can't wait. Hope this is as good as I think it could be
A decent first draft minus the poe and rey stuff.
I personally like Dominion and the JW trilogy as a whole.
I'm a big fan of the Jurassic Park/World franchise.
To open the door for future stories involving romantic arcs with the Jedi and it not being taboo.
poe and rey stuff was set up in force awakens novelization. then they did nothing with it.
The idea of someone who wants to badly to use the force for his own selfish ends but is unable to because of his own lack of talent and connection to it is awesome.
wow the ending gave me literal chills, wish this was the real movie
How would you fix the Rey / Kylo stuff to make it less anti-climactic?
That's a Resistance actor in a mask."
Then they play the security video of Han and Kylo on the catwalk -- without his helmet, and everyone sees Kylo murder Han. Appalled, the citizens turn on Kylo, seeing him for the liar he is.
Infuriated, Kylo ignites his saber and destroys the jumbo tron screen in a fit of rage, a callback to his tantrums in TFA.
Then the Falcon appears in the sky and Rey, on a megaphone, says "Kylo-Ren, stand down." Kylo grabs the mic and yells "YOU TURNED THEM AGAINST ME!"
Rey replies, "You have done that yourself."
It feels very forced and I think like Finn and Rey would make a better couple.
crazy thing is this was a first draft and it was still amazing. honestly, this version would have saved the sequel trilogy.
exactly, like, this is just the paper version made by the writer alone, it would then go into consultations with other people, undergo tweaks and a more realized finished product
and then on top of that a lot of clarity comes out during filming itself, and some things might've looked even better than in this comic
the foundation is incredibly solid, Rise's foundation was "bring back the big bad and make him very evil with 1000 kyber powered & fully manned star destroyers he got out of his ass"
Nothing could have saved it. The last jedi was so out of place, so ridiculous, so full of comedy, this wouldn't have saved it. It was doomed from that movie onward.
Great ending? sure
But saving? no
This would not have saved the Sequel Trilogy.

"Like any development process, it was only in the development that we're looking at a first draft and realizing that it was perhaps heading in a direction that many of us didn't feel was really quite where we wanted it to go." -- Kathleen Kennedy, on Trevorrow's script
Always remember that Lucasfilm rejected this BEFORE The Last Jedi backlash. People blame critics of TLJ for Rise of Skywalker but Trevorrow was fired before TLJ came out.
TLJ critics did not ask for Rise of Skywalker. On behalf of all TLJ critics, we would have preferred Duel of the Fates too.

I really wish we would have got this version. I would like to have seen Kylo live and become Ben Solo again.
Disney needed to put to bed the Skywalkers and have Star Wars grow from that family.

yep this is my head canon now
If this script became Cannon for Episode IX it would bring everything full circle to bringing back in a way the precursor to the Jedi Order that being the Jedai Rangers of Typhon back when even before the Old Republic started.

We were robbed, this would have been a much better finale. Especially Finn actually having a character arc, starting a revolution.

IVE BEEN WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO MAKE SOMETHING LIKE THIS FOR SO LONG
This is awesome, my only wish is that the artist added some filters to give it slightly off-register look like a vintage comic. It would have made it look more like a movie-adaption comic you would have seen back in the day!
A pure work of art. Most definitely better than the original Rise of Skywalker, any day! What doesn't Disney see in the Star Wars community? Made my day and many more.
I am a huge Star Wars fan, and I truly enjoyed this video. Good work!
Now, that is a script to a 1000 times better ending to the Skywalker Saga than what Disney sold us. Thank you for the production of the script.
This is much more thought out than episode 9 but there a few major problems
The Rey/Poe romance was teased at the end of TLJ
The description says the original script was finished in 2016. That's before Last Jedi. Wonder if our favorite Johnson was supposed to set up the romance there. Since he went off the rails, they had to get rid of this since it wouldn't fit or thought they should at any rate. Oh and one ship with Death Star lasers is at least better than 30 thousand.
Also, gow did rey and kylo know where mortis was? The jedi texts?
The way I understood it is that the first order indeed broke the galactic economy. There is poverty all over the galaxy and workers accept a life as a slave just to be brought somewhere where there is enough food. Divide and conquer was the strategy the first order applied and they accepted any negative consequences. I think they were afraid to repeat the mistake of the Empire.
> 3. The finalizer has a Death Star laser out of nowhere, like not mentioned again or given any explanation. You can’t just have a new dearth star laser on a ship and give absolutely no explanation.
Yeah, like a planet full of Death Stars on ship form, rulled by the ghost of a Sith, that somehow returned.
Bro, they made like a death star to end a solar system in movie VII, it's not a crazy jump to miniaturize a single normal death star.
My favourite part is when right before hux commits suicide he proclaims "oh no, ive lost the star wars" 😂😂😂😂
Embrace both dark and bright side is not how the balance in the Force works. Its bright dominate dark side that is how balance was created. In this original script make Rey have Kanan and Revan vibes. Also this script also have plot hole about Plagueis's master somehow still alive. Why Ben and Rey relate to Mortis? That's why Ahsoka will go back to that arc which it more make sense since Ahsoka is already involved before.
Definitely a better story than RoS. Not perfect, but better. Thanks for making that.
