    Pause @5:19 and watch that mast start getting out of shape before it snaps. I wonder if the down draft from the chopper had any effect on that?

    Would have to be one of the crash-iest sports. Far better than bicycle tumbles, racecar barrier crashes, motor bike slides. More like jousting, with those bow sprits.

    Ferry incident seemed avoidable looked like it was going to fast being so close to another big commercial boat...right of way is one thing though logic is another in those windy conditions when it was clear there were a few sailboats around racing! Could have been fatalities there!

      Ferrys have right of way on Sydney Harbour (by regulation). However, some ferry skippers don't like to alter course, when they probably should.

    The wings should have a locking mechanism so they can’t fold inwards

    Those heli's really need to keep their distance... at 5:25 the mast snapped because of that stupid heli.

    • @Matt-sb3dj
      @Matt-sb3dj 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Burpeflurb Are you dumb?. The mast fell forward not down. The Mast broke in two places; the bottom bracket and slightly up the mast. That was from too much pressure pushing he mast forward because they were on a run.

    • @SwagMaster-fq8qg
      @SwagMaster-fq8qg 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Or from too much wind created by the downdraft from the helicopter. You clearly have no idea how powerful those blades are.

    • @paulpatrick4977
      @paulpatrick4977 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Peppa Pig yeah the helicopter didn't do it singlehandedly but it could of had enough of an effect to push the mast to break

    • @johnmichaels2495
      @johnmichaels2495 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep. These boats are designed to the limit, and the mast of that boat was designed to handle the load of the spinnaker in X amount of wind, but it isn't designed to handle the load of the spinnaker plus the powerful downdraft from a helicopter.

      Good thing that nowadays you can use a drone instead of a helicopter.

    You just know when there are advertisements all over the place that the boats will be shit, and they are. All about ME NOW and the instant pictures for the magazines and absolutely no sailing involved.

    • @johnmichaels2495
      @johnmichaels2495 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Those advertisements are how those teams are funded. This is considered by many to be one of the most challenging boats in the world to sail. This is an expensive fleet to race in, so corporate sponsors are important. It's an extremely high performance development class, so the equipment is designed as close to the margin as possible.

    These things look very fragile; not built to last. Are they made in China?

    • @andrewstabback4747
      @andrewstabback4747 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They were made in Australia 30 years ago by hand
      They were being sailed at their limit and in really tough conditions so not fragile at all!

    • @wrybread
      @wrybread 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You can have a boat built like a tank, or you can have a fast boat, but not both...

    • @johnmichaels2495
      @johnmichaels2495 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      These boats are very carefully engineered and are built to a higher standard than almost any other. They are both very strong and very fragile, build to be as light as possible so they can plane easily. Fragile does not mean weak, and fragile does not mean low quality.
      The only 18 footers I would expect to be build in China would be if the team is based out of China. These are all one-offs, and they're usually built locally.
      There is virtually no cost advantage to shipping low-volume production overseas, especially in something as sensitive as this.
