Probably one of the most underappreciated bands from the 1970's. Meaningful lyrics that ascends beyond the usual unrequited love, sad boy girl routine, taking us to a different place where the metaphysical is just over the horizon.

They played in the student union when I went to college in Cedar Falls, IA in the mid-70s. They are (were) one of the few bands that sounded EXACTLY the same as their recordings in a live performance. They were fairly big in my University of Northern Iowa world, but I'm truly mystified why they never got serious national recognition with all the wonderful music they created.

    • @michaelmckenna6464

Maybe the reason the album didn’t sell was because Gypsy released the album as a 2-LP set (meaning higher sticker price).

@THE LONDON LOU EXPERIENCE The Holy Mackerel was one band that was cursed. With several personnel changes during their recording sessions, prompting a few album cover changes followed by the band breaking up upon its completion, even the musical contributions of Paul Williams as writer and performer, with Richard Perry as the producer, couldn’t save their 1968 album from sinking without a trace.

I was a 60-70's kid in Minneapolis. Now 72 years old and still listening to all the legends. Minneapolis used to be called the "Minni-Apple) being blessed with the best local bands and the most venues where all the rock legends played (Zepplin, Joplin, Mood Blues, Yes, Doors, Hendrix, Prince, etc. etc.) For another mostly unknown look up Doug Maynard Band. He had the greatest local following and many of us based our entertainment calendar on where he was playing. Pass it on!

The Doors are the best. And they only recorded from 1967-1971 -- they didn't waste time, and they didn't have "filler". Jim Morrison left the world with their best album, "LA WOMAN", full of so many GREAT songs. What a loss... And it's too bad people refer to fiction despite all the interviews being out there.

It has to be the most overlooked and underrated album in rock history! This band should have been HUGE! I've been a fan since the mid 70s but missed my 1 chance to see them live at the Super Jam in Busch Stadium in 1977 (it was over 100 degrees on the Astroturf field I heard). But I've seen the reformed Gypsy led by original Hammond organist and vocals Owl Walsh (RIP) about 15 times since 2000.

I love how the music rolls from one type into another without missing a beat! Instrumentals were all so fantastic! Simply stated, Enrico Rosenbaum was a musical genius! His suicide at such an early age and at the inception of this band and its music was truly abominable!

better than Pink Floyd "Dark Side of the Moon"??!! Genesis "Selling England by the Pound"?, "Jethro Tull "Aqualung"??!! Yes "Close to the Edge"??! King Crimson "In the Court of the Crimson King"?? Well I think it's a good record, I like the music but isn't it a little exaggerated the comparisons??!!

52:54 through 57:58 such a beautiful passage , one of the best to me and that guitar note that starts around 57:46 the sustain off the charts and the blend of the organs , simply out standing .

Just watched the documentary on these guys. Amazing. Cool sounds; like a bridge between BS&T/Chicago and later bands like Styx/Journey. Rockier than the former, funkier than the latter.

What an EPIC album by the group formerly known as The Underbeats. I had the album "Gypsy"; a two record set of stellar harmonies, songwriting, arranging and composition and I still listen to these two record albums to this day 8/15/2024. Possibly the greatest rock album ever recorded in the Midwest.

I recently heard this album for the very first time. I'm wondering why the Seattle AM and FM stations NEVER played this. I used to think that KJR, KZOK, KISW and KOL played the best and the hippest tunes back in the early 70's. I guess I was wrong.

Jim (calvin james) Johnson on guitar. Rico Rosenbaum, who died young of a drug related suicide. These are essentially The Underbeats, a 60s band that couldn't be more different !

"In the Garden" was a favourite album back in those days. I've heard their other albums years later, thanks to the internet. Just couldn't find Gypsy in the stores where I lived. I have no idea how I even got "In the Garden" and it was on an 8 track. This album is very good, too. Thanks for the upload.

I got this album as a cut-out (dollar bin) in the Pearl Harbor PX sometime in 1970. I still think it's one of the greatest albums I've ever heard. I bought "In the Garden" back home in Champaign, IL in 1971. I've still got both of them.
