Beklager.))
"Come home, I miss you" ─ I cried along with Susannah. I can't imagine what it's like to be a parent who has lost a child. It's still dark around Eric and Susannah, who have to move through their grief every day, because a year after Itaewon tragedy, they still don't know why Stine had to die.
Part of the problem is that the current government has used the tragedy as a political football. Not only has it failed to punish any of those responsible for the tragedy, but it has consistently shown inaction when it comes to "uncovering the truth" in order to avoid accountability. This inaccessibility is the cliché of "authoritarian regimes," and it was certainly predictable after March 9 last year. Right now, South Korea is in the midst of a regression in all sectors: political, administrative, economic, and cultural. The bureaucrats in this government are so insane with self-interest and power that they lie like they breathe. In the face of their unconscionableness, Koreans are in a state of massive helplessness. This is such a time. South Korea has never had a democracy in full bloom. Moreover, it's tantamount to a state of anarchy for now.
But even in the midst of this, there are people who know how to be ashamed, who know how to empathize, who have the courage to not turn away from the "truth." I hope that kind of courage brings a little light to Eric and Susanna in that dark room, as this report does.
((I used a translator to convey my feelings, but it wasn't enough. I'm sorry.))

this is so very sad, I cry with the families ... But I have no hope... does anyone even remember the Sewol disaster? Yes, it was in 2014, it's not even 10 years, and I remember vividly because my Korean friend lost her little sister in the disaster. I tried to provide help as a friend as good as I could and so I could get an impression pretty much first hand back then of how those left behind were treated. I remember how many families protested, how even Korean actors had the yellow ribbons on their instagram at the anniversary date, how much pain and injustice there was and still is and? Forgotten, no one remembers anything about it anymore, no more yellow ribbons, yet, here is the next disaster, again so many people left in pain and shock and anger, and again the government not willing AT ALL to help or take responsibility. Mark my words, this time it won't even take 5 years, and all this will be forgotten until the next disaster then will go the exact same way. The single fates of the dead and those left behind mean nothing to the government. Back after 2014 I thought maybe things will get better, maybe something good can happen from this tragedy. But seeing this now in 2023, how the government is totally indifferent, and no one taking any responsibility, nothing has changed at all, in fact it feels like it's even worse than before
And personally, meanwhile I don't even have any interest to ever visit South Korea again.

Just wanted to add that this family is not the only one who had problems with the documents they received from the government. One of the victims was a Korean-Austrian who graduated from my university, the University of Vienna, and his family had to go through a lot of challenges to get all medical documents and incident reports. The government is very racist towards foreigners, especially those who are ethnically Korean. It is insane. In the end, they had to enlist help from another investigative journalism channel (I forgot their name) and the Austrian government/embassy to get the documents and reports. However, what infuriated the most was when the family confronted the President of South Korea, who was visiting Vienna that day and the President nonchalantly told the grieving mother along the lines of "You are Korean, so be a Korean and pull yourselves together." There is no accountability! It is like because they are foreigners, they don´t have the right to know what really happened. I feel for Stine's family and friends. It is nuts how foreigners are being treated by the government. The government need to take accountability for everyone who lost someone in this tragedy!

Citizens of South Korea or any Korean individuals are not guilty for this tragedy, therefore they shouldn't apologize to foreign victims. It's the SK Government that has to apologize. The irresponsibility in handling the crowds on that night falls upon the government- they have lots of CCTV across the streets, why can't their departments coordinate the moment they realize the crowd size was getting too big to not be monitored. Especially when there were emergency calls a few times asking for the government's people to actually do something about the crowds. After the incident, they also should coordinate to handle the result so the victims' families have clarity of what happened that night, how the victims became victims, and whatever else they need to do to make sure those responsible pay for it. Then coordinate to support the victims' families well, including counseling support n all other care.
The way they keep failing to provide before, during, and after the incident.... Is just. Wow. In conclusion, it's the SK Government that has to apologize for their halfhearted efforts. It's not the fault of the citizens. It's the government.
