  • The Ultimate Chopper - does it really do what the infomercial says it can?
Can it make peanut butter out of nothing but peanuts? Can it make ice cream? Can it make concrete into powder?
Follow Mike on Twitter theonlymikej and tweet him some recipes to try out in an upcoming video!

In case you're wondering about that burning smell, it's the same reason they can claim "750 watts" - they intentionally make the motors in appliances as cheap and inefficient as possible, wasting all the watts as noise and heat. You could probably do the same job with a quality 250 watt motor.

I had one of these in college. Used it a lot. Where it really shines, honestly, is turning leftovers into breakfast or lunch.
I mean, the basic formula of mayonnaise, a pickled gherkin, a slice of onion, salt and pepper, and then whatever meat you have left over? Almost always makes a great sandwich. Roast beef. Chicken or turkey of any description. Tuna. A boiled egg, even. You can tailor it a bit to what you're doing - a bit of horseradish for beef, some mustard if you're using ham, etc, but you don't have to. The thing will fit enough ingredients for one rather hearty sandwich, or two modest ones.
You can make a pretty good potato pancake if you have a leftover baked potato - put in about half of a medium-sized baked potato, an egg, a wedge or slice of onion (about as much as you would use on a sandwich), a thick slice of cheese, and some salt, pepper, and garlic powder to taste. Pulse a couple of times until it's a thick batter, spoon onto an oiled pan heated to medium heat, dividing the batter between two cakes. Fry for 3-5 minutes per side, or until nicely golden brown. Eat plain or garnish with sour cream. Makes a good side for a larger meal, or a nice light lunch in their own right.
And yeah, the little bowl gets stained pretty bad by carrots, beetroot, or anything with much color. I don't know if it's something about the plastic they used, or what.

The concrete test was bound to fail because in the infomercial, they clearly used a breeze block (also known as cinder block) which can be used as a cheap alternative to bricks in the construction industry (the estate I grew up on was constantly under construction, building sites were my playgrounds, you tend to pick up on a few things when you play footie on a pitch dotted with rubble, mud and drainpipes)

Cauliflower fried rice: process cauliflower in your food processor (or ultimate chopper) until it resembles rice. Cut up about 7 button mushrooms and 2 spring onions (using a knife). In pan with a bit of oil, fry mushrooms and onions until just soft, add cauliflower rice (about 2 cups per person) and Cook until cooked. Add soy sauce for singer extra flavor. We make this using a tiny chopper with not much power and it takes about 20 lots to process a head of cauliflower.

I actually have TWO of these (mother-in-law gave us one, and we found one with the blender attachment at a Goodwill store for really cheap). The blender attachment is REALLY good for making bigger things thing milkshakes or mixed drinks, etc. As for the original cup, it's pretty good at chopping garlic and removing the skin (like they show in the infomercial), but what the wife and I have used it for the most is making hummus.

Then, place all the above ingredients into the Ultimate Chopper and blend it until it is smooth. If needed, adjust the sweetness according to taste and pour into serving glasses. Enjoy! The smell is because they use underpowered motors, like a 110V one with 220V mains, so the smell you smell is the brushes sparking and making ozone because they are too small for the current its drawing and the motor wouldnt last 10 minutes continiously. Its all in all like a mix of a coffee grinder and a food processor.

I have a few ideas for recipes for you. Pico de gallo (fresh salsa like dip without the tomato paste base. I'm scaling the recipe down for obvious reasons.) Mince 1 clove of garlic, and set aside to mix in later. Chop 1/2 of a white onion set aside and add 5-6 table spoons of lime juice to the onions resting in the bowl. (The citric acid "cooks" the onion and takes away some pungency) Now in the chopper add 2 roma tomatoes or one medium tomato, half a bunch of fresh cilantro, or 3 table spoons dried cilantro and 1 jalepeno or 2 depending on tolerance and Chop. Now mix all the ingredients together add 1 table spoon of salt or salt and add lime to taste. Super easy and quick to make tastes great!

  • @darknovablast

    Try home-made spaghetti bolognese.
Mince the meat from bigger pieces (I suppose it's not big enough for more than diced meat like you'd use in stew).
Use it to mix the meat, tomatoes, mushrooms, sauce, etc, all together.
Use it to mix the dough for the spaghetti.
At this point you'd have to hand-roll the spaghetti from the dough. Can skip this and just buy ready made spaghetti but it'd be interesting to see if it can mix dough properly.
Finally use it to "powder" the parmesan for dusting over the top of the completed meal.
If you want bonus points, hand-make some garlic bread for the side. Again will require manually rolling it into shape once it's out of the chopper, but that's relatively easy and requires no tools.

Processor/blender ice cream does work but it's more for something that blends with the blades facing upwards rather than sideways, as your experiment showed, since it tends to stick to the sides. If the blades face up the vibration can knock the frozen berries and cream back into them and spin them up, if it doesn't you can tap the container on the table a bit to shake them loose again.
Anyway as a small tip, add some sugar, vanilla and a tiny sprinkle of salt to it, helps the flavor a lot.

Starter: Salmon Tartare (can be served on toasted bread maybe) - smoked salmon, spring onions, salt, pepper, olive oil, chillies if you like it spicy, parsley, squeezed lemon juice, or grate the zest - all in the chopper to a slightly small chunky texture.
Main: Spaghetti with tomato & basil sauce - Blend chopped tomatoes (out of a tin) with salt, pepper, fresh basil leaves, garlic, red onion (if you want it in there) , hint of olive oil. Blend until liquidised then heat in pan and add spaghetti to mix (can also add chicken or fish afterwards if desired) can also add parmesan or capers etc to the blending if you like.
Dessert: Banana & biscuit crumb with wafers (I made this one up) - Blend bananas, bit of cream and digestive biscuits together with a hint of sugar. Serve on top of ice cream wafers.

Correct me if I am wrong but that's not exactly how powdered sugar works. What you made was ultra fine granulated sugar which is good for icings and other light desserts. POWDERED SUGAR has cornstarch in it to prevent caking and melting in moister so it won't clump up like it did in the video and is ground to an even finer texture than what it came out in. It would have been POWDER, not clumpy crystals.

Ok Chef Mike, here's a recipe straight from Poland for a dish called "Tatar".
    Ingridients:
    300g of veal (sirloin)
    3 Egg yokes
    1 shallot
    1 not too large pickle
1 tsp mustard (not too spicy)
    1 tbsp of olive oil
    salt
    pepper
You finely blend it all in and eat it raw, if you'd like you can spread on a piece of bread. It's commonly served as a starter in Poland.

Got a recipe that you can try out and you won't even need a measuring cup :)
Ingredients: 1 can tuna, 1 can cream of mushroom soup, one or two sticks of celery, 1/4 onion (optional), a handful of frozen peas (optional), one small bag of Chinese noodles (I use Farkay Chow Mein noodles, but I dunno if you can get those in Britain) 1/4 bay leaf, chili powder, thyme, rosemary and basil to taste. You will also need one small casserole dish.
Put the celery (and onion) in the chopper, chop finely. Add the tuna and spices just to mix. Put in the baking dish.
Put 3/4 of the bag of noodles in the chopper, pulse once or twice. Add to tuna mix.
Stir in the soup (do not add water) and the peas. Sprinkle remaining noodles on top.
Bake at 350 degrees for about 15 minutes. (You can turn on your broiler to brown the noodles on top, if you like)

Hummus: Chickpeas(recommend that you let them soak in water overnight), garlic, sesame seed paste, olive oil, and some spices(salt, pepper, onion and garlic powder).

Here's a spiced ham spread you can make in a processor:
Take leftover ham, some mayonnaise, a small bit of hot sauce, and some mustard, and toss them in the processor. Blend 'til smooth. If it's too dry, add some more mayo. Should come out nice. I don't have estimates on the sauces, because it's really a "season to taste" sort of thing, the mayo is key for making it spreadable though.

My grandmother-in-law bought one of these for my husband and I. It sucks. the well for food is tiny, it got gummed up all the time and the lid broke really easily (much like your pre-broken one). It was terrible, replaced it within a few months with a full processor. Then ditched that for just chopping food

I'm not a very experenced cook. Can somebody tell me if the Ultimate Chopper does anything a food proccesor can't? It looks like a cheaply constructed food proccesor to me.
As for the size, I guess it would work well if used to make things like salsa or pesto while something is cooking in the oven or on the stove.

Pretty sure I'm too late for the recipes, but here's my go:
    Batch one: Potatoes and carrots
    Makes: Mash
Batch two: Chicken filet, onion, cheese, sage, thyme, pepper and bell pepper
    Makes: Meaty paste
Put the mash on the bottom of a oven proof tray, top with the paste and put in oven for 20 minutes on 220 degrees Celsius.

I only trust Chef Excellence. ;)
BTW, when you say recipes to make, does that mean they have to be ones that you at straight away or is cooking allowed? Because you could make nutella brownies, just put 280g of nutella, 62g of plain flour and 2 eggs all whizzed together and then baked for about ten minutes or so. Just keep an eye on if so it doesn't overcook and possibly put it on for less time if you've got a really hot oven. 160C to cook it at.

So they say the blade is guaranteed forever? What if, theoretically, like in 90 or 150 years, you or someone who ended up with it wants the blade replaced? Do you really think they'll still be around replace it? No. Also, all these cheap choppers seem to have the same problem: You still have to chop up whatever it is so it'll fit in it as opposed to a real food processor where you just throw the food in it. Piece of junk.

You could probably get away with a batch of hummus. One cup cooked or canned chickpeas, 1/4 cup tahini, one or two cloves garlic, a few tablespoons lemon juice, and some salt. Proportions are a bit open because hummus is kind of subjective: some people like tahini-heavy hummus, some like it more garlicky, some like very creamy hummus and some like it more coarse, and so on. About halfway through blending process, drizzle a little olive oil in the mix, then continue blending.
(If you've never used tahini, you're going to notice that some brands have a thick layer of oil above a layer of paste that's almost the density of modeling clay. You'll have to mix the two together before measuring, and it's a bit of a chore, so it might even be worth it to see how quickly the Ultimate Chopper can blend tahini paste.)

I like how they keep bringing up the wattage like it's how powerful the machine is. Wattage is how much electricity it uses, not the strength of the motor. They're basically extolling the virtues of raising your electric bill!

umm, how will you do it now that the blades are dull. Also it looked like it was smoking a tad.
If you want a simple recipe. You can try making pepper or tomato soup. You could also make pesto? I have no idea what is in pesto. Or Hummus which is pureed chickpeas.

  • @MissAnimegrl
    @MissAnimegrl 9 ปีที่แล้ว

The peanut butter is best made with about a tablespoon of peanut oil, and yes, the carrots either need to be lightly cooked, or put in about a tablespoon of water for extra liquidiness. These machines also require you to hold that button down a little longer, or not done in pulses. If you had held it down longer during the peanut butter trial and the carrot trial you may have reached the consistancy they showed in the informercial.

  • @1337n0mad

Hello! I enjoyed the episode Mike. Probably the most nostalgic for me since this thing had daily commercials on some stations when I was a kid.
I like to ponder which you dislike more in this video: your lacking culinary skills and the machines ineffective capacity. I'm sure the ice cream would have been better if you had added sugar and/or eggs (which you were aware) to actually bolster the flavor. But this machine had a lot of promise from its infomercial and it didn't perform as good as the machines that it was in competition to. Really you busted this infomercial with the ice cream maker claim, how could anyone buy that this device could compete with an ice cream maker?
Also, You really should wear gloves and/or at least safety goggles if you're going to destroy a food processor. Great video Mike!
