It was all a preface for the show. Holy hell, it blew me away. I've been to a lot of concerts and, barring the amazing, once in a lifetime shows I never thought would happen like Tom Waits, it was the best show of my life. I'd seen The National three times prior, but they still managed to surprise me. I lost my shit when they played 'Lucky You.' Never thought I'd hear it live. And then this song. It killed me. I'm dead now. The National killed me, and I'm alright with that.
I drove up from Chicago with a couple friends for this show. It was an amazing day. Seeing, and being humbled by, the Otis Redding memorial. Parking a block away from a restaurant that served a drink named "High Violet" on the day we were in town for The National. Giving our extra ticket away to a homeless guy after not being able to sell it, and then learning from another scalper that he sold it for 25 bucks. They are memories I'll cherish for life.
