Only going to work on a limited number of plastic types, polystyrene (think styrofoam cup), ABS, maybe PVC (PVC pipes are solvent cemented) Acetone is what is used to bond acrylic together. ABS is one of the simplest plastics to bond with a wide variety of adhesives available to do the job. Epoxy, silicone cement, super glue: all work

I am thinking 'of super expensive vehicle parts' that are basically bio-degradable in a hot engine compartment. Dumb idea to make so much from plastic and not solid metal. But here we are.$90,000 dollar plastic road palaces that are literally crumbling from the time you buy them. 50 years from now there will be no restored modern vehicle. From the 30's to the 70's yes! Plastic is to save weight and adds on 1000% more in costly replacement of cheap crappy ABS broken parts. This and other tricks with half a brain will prevent you from ditching a running vehicle due to 'no parts' or 'costly parts' Just saying'

ABS plastic is used mostly in automotive since it is very high temperature. 3D printer users know that they can smooth their printed parts with acetone vapors in an enclosure. Make sure you are doing all of this in a well ventilated area as ABS gives off volatile organic compounds.

This is a good way of repairing ABS which is one of the more difficult plastics to work with. But you don't really need to dissolve bits of plastic in a solvent such as the suggested acetone here. Just use a fine artist's paint brush to apply acetone onto the parts to be glued together. Do this a few times until the surfaces are visibly melted and then stick the 2 parts together.

Excellent. In a time when 90% of your vehicle is made from cheap bio-degradable, 'SUPER Exspensive', and new parts are 'unobtainable', fixing a broken part becomes 'mandatory' if you plan on driving your vehicle. I am thinking of German vehicles mainly here, but Japanese/ Korean/American also. This is a super way of repairing dam near any part ( with a moderate amount of skill and ingenuity.) Unfortunately, most sheeple do not possess such 'think out of the box' mentality. I do!
    Thanks.

Thanks for this video and showing us how to cut up the donor pieces of plastic and just mix them with solvent in an appropriate syringe.
If your method happens to not work on a viewer's particular project, I suggest using Loctite HY 4070 Special Hybrid Adhesive which comes in a small box with everything you need to work with it. I buy it online because I have never seen it in a big box store or a regular hardware store. HY 4070 will glue together items made of plastic or fiberglass, including car bumper covers, broken tail lights, car trim pieces, washing machine parts, as an anchor for wood cabinet screws used to secure door hinges in holes that have gotten too large over time to hold the screws tightly enough to keep cabinet doors from fitting correctly. It will also quickly work on just about anything else you need to join together. The supplied syringe contains two chemicals in separate chambers, and uses a special plunger to force the two chemicals in the correct proportions into in one of 4 special, disposable mixing tube that come in the box with the adhesive. The nozzles will dispense the adhesive in small or large amounts exactly where you need the adhesive to go. It is gap filling, and sets hard in about 5 to 7 minutes - some say it takes 24 hours for a full cure, but after 7 minutes it is permanent enough such that even using a sharp blade, you can't easily remove the excess adhesive that has dried on the outside of a crack you repaired with it. You can use Loctite's special primer to clean surfaces to be joined, or a heptane-based solvent, such as Rubber Cement Solvent, for extra assurance the adhesive will bond the surfaces you are trying to glue together. When I order the Loctite product, I also order extra bags of extra Loctite-brand mixing nozzles, because the nozzles are not easily cleaned after the adhesive hardens. If you have a number of things to glue up, put them all in one work area, so you can save time and money, and avoid wasting the special mixing nozzles, so that all your projects can be quickly glued together before the glue mix in the nozzle starts to set.
