Back in the 70s and 80s it was fairly normal to have one pair of thin fine-knit fingerless gloves and a pair of mittens, to start with the mittens would have been Dachstein Mitts (shrunken wool very dense), later fibre pile mitts with vapour permeable waterproof outers (Goretex equivalent). The two together worked brilliantly. What we never did was wear gloves as our main protection against the cold, always mittens. It took seconds to hunker down, back to the wind, remove a mitten whilst still wearing the fingerless gloves, do what needed to be done and then replace the mitten. I've used this system in the arctic, and winter hill walking.
The fingerless gloves are essential for cold weather where you need manual dexterity to operate cameras and multi rotors. Looked great and you looked so happy to be out camping…more please !
Glade you got a night out Richard! Great video! Just watching it made me feel cold...lol. I think it would be awesome if you had a video with your brother Richard. Nothing like enjoying time with family.
Thanks for that Richard it really does look a lovely camping spot and with the Drone footage gives an excellent oversight of the views! Thanks for taking us along!⛺️👣🎮🛸☕️☕️👍🦉😎
I could almost feel the chill while watching here in my centrally heated house. A great camp and a wonderful production. Richard it is good to see you out and about, stay safe and all the best.
Jelly babies!!.....theres your first mistake mate quite a weighty confection.....flumps,flying saucers possibly foam bananas thats more the weigh (sic) to go 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Cracking vid.....i do like a ration unboxing👍
Wow Richard mate, thanks so much for your kind words😁 And for giving me a shout out, that’s mega of you, I really appreciate it! Great spot for a camp, looked stunning next to the water👌🏻 Thanks again mate, speak soon👍🏻 Mark
Windy and freezing cold, I am so glad I live in the sub tropics. You can keep your cold camping. lol Having lived in Europe for a time, I am sure I recognised the sound of swans honking as they flew over your camp.
Beautiful scenery Richard ,only just started to follow Ur adventures ,Ur doing great and such a happy chappy when Ur out and about ! Get some walking poles 🙂👌
Ah the good old days of your head spinning with hexy blocks in a small space! Pretty sure we didn’t have Tortellini pur Boeuf (you lucky so and so!) Great vid as always and excellent music and footage 👏👏👏
I might be mistaken but looks like you parked at or near Kettlewell in Wharfedale. A few of us do an annual pilgrimage to the campsite in the village for a motorcycle camp long weekend! Glorious spot with loads of great roads and walks around. Thanks for a cracking wildcamp. Richard Indoors 👍
Good Video Richard, Great scenery and a nice spot to pitch up. You would never have guessed there was a lake on top of those hills. The contents of that French ration pack are amazing! Lenses for cameras are overpriced nowadays, unless you buy secondhand or third party. I use a Sony camera for the reason 'A' mount Minolta lens fit it. Although they are old, the glass is fantastic and the build quality like a tank!! ...🙂👍🏻
Sorry to see you getting so cold but a great video. I have taken to using a hot water bottle as an instant warm up facility when I get cold, you may like to try that, I know it is not rugged but it works. Glad to see you up and about again. Look after yourself.
Hi Richard, Just caught up with your last two videos, both great as usual. Looked a tad parky up by that tarn, good job you had your Hestras (like you I have a pair of those and they are great). Pleased to see you are nearly back to your old self health wise. All the best.
Great video and location! We have tried the French ration packs and really enjoyed them! Have already subscribed to Trig point Adventures. Great videos and definitely worth a look if you haven't already.
Hi Richard, on the lens theme. Sigma do lenses for Canon some of which rate higher and are considerably cheaper. Your photographer acquaintance will be able to advise you on that. I use an APC camera, Samsung nx500, still learning, but have not spent a lot on glass as don't need every lens to be autofocus. I have bought most lenses from Oxfam online (win/win) best buy so far being a Vivitar 500mm with Canon FD to Samsung NX adaptor, circa £130. A Canon FD 50mm £20. If you can live without auto focus and use AF only if talking to camera. The challenge of getting great images for less is part of the fun.
Sorry said 500mm it's a 120 - 600mm great for wildlife. (as long as it sits for a few seconds). Canon FD 50mm f1.8, super sharp wee lens. Again on 5diii you would need adapter. Super cheap, great results.
Nice views from up there Richard, Pen-y-ghent just visible at one point I think. It's a beautiful part of the country. Looks like you were well fed. Just be careful with heximine in enclosed spaces, the fumes are toxic. There was probably plenty of ventilation, but better safe than sorry!
Amazing views! Thanks for taking us along. Also definitely enjoyed the longer video. PS-Trying to find your stickers on the website, all I see is your bad a** stove! I would love to buy one but I can't afford it.... So I'm settling for stickers as soon as I can find them!
@@RichardOutdoors FYI, I'm posting your Channel on a random website I visit constantly. Hopefully you get some subs from it, let's get you to that 10K mark!
Awesome! Hey Richard, I feel that hill climb! I'm pretty unfit and am considering getting one of those pull along trollies for my camping gear, though I'd have to wear a backpack up hills. Maybe one of those that also attaches to a bike seat for duel use. .. speaking of being cold, have you seen Bushman and blue? His new video out is like a horror video of what can go wrong camping. Would make for a great health and safety video how a camp can go dangerously wrong. Highly recommended!
5D MIII is a great camera, a wider angle lens is beneficial for astro shots but you'll get some great shots with a nifty fifty. You'll find a wide angle lens cheaper second hand, well worth it though. 🙂 Adam
So good Richard to see you out and about - hope you're feeling much better now?? I am a new Sub to your channel, highlighted by Simon a Bloke in the Woods when you did a camp with him. Hopefully you, Simon and Andy can do a joint camp this year, that would be ace. Anyway, take care and be safe and well. Regards, Neil.
If you are looking for a more affordable lens there are some about at f3.5 to 4.5. Its the f2.8 that pushes the price and I'm not sure you would notice the difference (I wouldn't). Its only one stop and you could increase the iso on the camera to compensate.
You have loads of subscribers! Yes agree, Trig point Mark deserves more. Love your cheerful way, new sub from me. Ps easy to shed weight, just look at all the things you had 2 of? Spoons, mugs/pan, stoves, coats, cameras, tripods, bags..what was in the big food bag?
Very nice. Beautiful! I'm in my 60s now and wanted to reduce my pack weight as well. Hard as I thought I was trying I couldn't commit to leaving items out until I got a smaller pack. I have been thinking about a Scarp1 with the additional cross poles. It seems that you like yours pretty well. Did the tent do as well with condensation like you thought it might? That French 24hr ration looked quite good too. I wonder if they are all as appealing. Thanks for sharing.
Hi and thanks for watching. I forgot to mention about the (lack of) condensation - it’s an incredible tent. There wasn’t a scrap of moisture in the inner! 👍
Richard, good to see you do some cold weather wild camping. I also have the Hestra gloves, both the guide and the work models. Excellent performance from both, down to -40 C. One pair is a size larger and allows me to stick in a handwarmer loosely inside the liner without cutting off circulation in any way. You mentioned heavy pack weights. Are you at the comfortable weight limit for the pack or over it? Also, is the hip belt taking most of the weight or are the shoulders taking more than they should be? Perhaps check with Simon for further infomation leading to a good solution for you. Happy to see you getting good health back.
Nice vid Richard... You looked cold mate...Too cold... Where did you get the ration box from? Received your Fire Trough Mini today, it's very sturdy and easy to assemble and I can't wait to try it. Normally, I just use a Trangia alcohol burner, but will try it as a twig stove at some point...
Hi Richard, we're watching you now. The 5DIII is very decent kit, and the Canon 50mm standard lens is very good. Forgive me if I'm repeating what you already know - The main thing you might notice with full frame by comparison to small formats is reduced depth of field, but this will not be relevant for distant subjects. What sort of lens are you seeking for this camera (and why?) - nice to see you out again, be well.
@@RichardOutdoors Richard, yes, noted that from the upload, but for w/a applications the smaller formats are easier, just as good, and at 70mm plus on Full Frame the DoF can be slim, plus the kit is much heavier - are you sure you're going the right way with Full Frame gear? GAS is a terrible affliction, I have suffered from it...
@@RichardOutdoors Hello again, YT didn't like my reply and suggestions. I used this kit professionally for 15 years, PM me if you would like a quick exchange of views, or indeed, not! Best, A.
