1: The star power up made made sense since it increases Mario speed. 2: The pipe cannons cannot send Mario to another pipe and shoot him out of it. Only from the one he was in. Still if it was positioned correctly like at the end it would have had a chance. 3: I'm a bit iffy on this one. The water could have been just a bottomless pit, or had a floor. Still would have slowed Sonic's speed. 4. The ice would have been slippery still, allowing Sonic to keep the speed he was going. If there was an obstacle there then yes, he would lose. 5: Yes, a hated but great use of warp box. 6: Seeing how the both had the same speed, it could have been a tie. However not having good reaction time cost Sonic the win. A cheated lose, but still. All in all. Both Mario and Sonic would have the same speed since this is mania/classic Sonic. Plus, Mario and sonic both have sportsmanship when it comes to playing fair. So I believe without items they both would have tied in the race.
I know I'm just responding to this comment, but in reality they don't have the same literal speed if Mario ran super fast no matter how hard he has stamina he would disintegrate and sonic would also disintegrate but he has much more stamina than Mario at least classic Sonic doesn't run so fast but the modern one if or if he needed the Boost it would already work as a protective aura while making him run faster.
In addition, if we compare it in power, Sonic is capable of destroying a space base with just supersonic and if we talk about literal hypersonic, anyone who gets in his way is reputed, even the entire world of Mario.
Actually MatPat already proved that Mario is faster than Sonic in their original games. It took longer for Sonic to cover a measured length of land than it did for Mario.

1: The star power up made made sense since it increases Mario speed.
2: The pipe cannons cannot send Mario to another pipe and shoot him out of it. Only from the one he was in. Still if it was positioned correctly like at the end it would have had a chance.
3: I'm a bit iffy on this one. The water could have been just a bottomless pit, or had a floor. Still would have slowed Sonic's speed.
4. The ice would have been slippery still, allowing Sonic to keep the speed he was going. If there was an obstacle there then yes, he would lose.
5: Yes, a hated but great use of warp box.
6: Seeing how the both had the same speed, it could have been a tie. However not having good reaction time cost Sonic the win. A cheated lose, but still.
All in all. Both Mario and Sonic would have the same speed since this is mania/classic Sonic. Plus, Mario and sonic both have sportsmanship when it comes to playing fair.
So I believe without items they both would have tied in the race.

I know I'm just responding to this comment, but in reality they don't have the same literal speed if Mario ran super fast no matter how hard he has stamina he would disintegrate and sonic would also disintegrate but he has much more stamina than Mario at least classic Sonic doesn't run so fast but the modern one if or if he needed the Boost it would already work as a protective aura while making him run faster.
In addition, if we compare it in power, Sonic is capable of destroying a space base with just supersonic and if we talk about literal hypersonic, anyone who gets in his way is reputed, even the entire world of Mario.

Actually MatPat already proved that Mario is faster than Sonic in their original games. It took longer for Sonic to cover a measured length of land than it did for Mario.

Well yeah. Thats what's funny about it. I like both Mario and Sonic evenly. And for what they are good at respectively. But this was made out of pure fun and laughs. And should not be taken so hard by any of the fans of both heroes. All and all the real reason for this, it should be watched out of pure enjoyment and because how bullshit the race is. That is all. Not because who is better. Mario is smart enough to not race Sonic if it came to that. And Sonic knows better not to race Mario knowing Mario can't win a race and would not even taunt Mario in the first place. The two have better things to do then fight. And the two heroes have no reason to fight one another unless it a friendly sports game or a good legit reason why they are fighting each other. Other then that, I don't seem them ever wanting to race when we all know who would win. Sonic. It's his turf. End of story. They are both smart enough to avoid a fight if ever possible. Mario haves his things Sonic has his own.

1. the star doesnt give mario that much of speed only a little bit and its a fact that sonic can run up to massivaly faster then light+ so mario would loose anyways
2. oh how convenient the pipes are placed this would only happen in 1 out of 10 occasions in a race between them 2, also i think this could be cheating since it could be possible that mario did those pipes on purpose
3. sonic can run fast enough to run on water and if he doesnt do that he has his buble shield as back up and if not that then he wouldnt accept a race that goes on water at all and if he did which most likely he wouldnt then hes just dumb which he isnt bcs hes above average his intelligence
4. just like flash sonic can get out of the ice by vibrating his body and he will if mario does that silly thing and beat him in race
