Hi Dave, very well built pergola mate. I have been following your content for a while now. I also work for a builder in Melbourne (site supervising) so I find your videos highly relatable. It seems like this pergola is a freestanding under 20sqm which does not require a building permit. However I have had experience helping a client in Bayside City Council (Highett from memory) doing a town planning amendment about 5 years ago for some decking they built after handover of their townhouse (which is a part of a town planning permit without decking spec'ed on the landscape plan). I wasn't sure how the Council found out (maybe through Nearmap) but the options given to the client was to either remove the structure and restore to what was drawn in the landscape plan or to apply for an amendment and redraw the landscape plan to reflect what was built. In your case the client's townhouse seems new and most likely part of a town planning permit. Just something I have experienced before and thought I could share it with you.

I’m planning on building my own but it’s hard to know what size beams and rafters to use for what span. Thanks and keep creating content! Awesome job mate nice. I think the purpose of the joist hangers vs batten screws from the end is that the timber won’t split if holding a lot of weight. As the hangers are cradling from the bottom. Not much tho prob, like you said 👌
Find your desired pitch. The video said 1.2 degrees. Workout the rise over the span at 1.2 degrees. Assume 100mm of rise. Divide 100mm of rise by the number of battens. Assume 10 battens = 10mm increase per batten. Spaced out evenly, each batten rip should be 10 mm thicker than the last until you reach you're 100mm rise

Technically this structure with a roof on it is classified by the VBA as a verandah not a pergola.

Great job! Tbh having a fall on the rafters would of been way nicer Vs seeing those packers under the batterns which dont look great at all.

I've been re-doing pergolas that have rotten away. I did my first one out of gal steel, it worked out to be cheaper to use steel and powder coated it.

It's only 4 posts with no walls, it will sway. The brace locks it into place so it can't move :) it's ugly but necessary
@@glitch2250 when the roof goes on it will take all the sway out of it also... the cross braces are just a bit unsightly
