One of the greatest storylines in soap-history! It was such a shame that Elizabeth and Jackie never came back - there was so much potential for many years of entertainement.
Elizabeth and Jackie both deserved to have a place in Phillip's life. Phillip should have had a talk with Rick in which he admitted that he missed both of his mothers.
There was so much drama surrounding Philip’s parentage when he was a boy. However, it’s strange that when Grant Alexander started portraying the adult Philip, neither mother was ever mentioned or seen again.
@@laminage Jackie died in a plane crash, but the body was never found and Elizabeth went to Europe for her mental health, so it would have been easy possible to bring them back.
I HAVE to come back to post a huge thank you for this video. Historically, this is so important... these two characters help create the awesome backdrop for Phillip's core issues, and almost no one under baby boomer age knows much about such an important part of Phillip's life! You know how much I appreciate you girl! :) I was small but remember this storyline well and loved it!
This storyline was the essence of GL for so many years and beyond. I was infuriated that not even Justin was mentioned at the end of the show or during those final days when Phillip was I'll.
Also, Phil experienced the ultimate in betrayals & that kind of pain breeds paranoia. He was never able to relax and fully trust, except for I think Ross, Lillian, Beth, and Rick. His narcissim believed " I should have seen this coming" whenever something wrong would happen and he would experience that ever present Phillip... GUILT. SO strong, that every now and then he would stay in stubborn denial of his responsibility for something bad. He would drink over the guilt & fear.
Understanding the early life... smothered, fought for, sick, coddled...is fascinating because he was cocooned in a false life of wealth and secrets. How could Phil handle the rage he felt toward Alan? He couldn't hate him , because the little boy inside him loved him as Dad . He couldn't love him, because he hated him for his "ways". They were enmeshed, & extracating himself from his false "identity" was impossible! He hated this in himself. SO he was driven by guilt as much as by fear.
Yes, don't you notice that in Springfield "Kids" have more than One Parent. Phillip has Two Fathers & Two Mothers, Gilly Grant has Two Fathers Charles Grant & Griffin Williams while Emma of course has Two Mommies Olivia & Natalia.
Witnessing constant manipulation & being devastated at puberty by revelation of all the lies of his 4 "parents", drove him to have deep control and identity issues. Fought duality of his biological Marler-writer-sensitive side vs. adopted- upperclass Spaulding side.
Did Elizabeth know that Jackie was Phillip's Bio Mother? Also, Phillip had so many problems. Being treated more like a Prize Possession than a Son. Finding out that his father committed adultery with his Nanny that produced a "Bio" Son. He's lied to about who he is, then thinks he's the result of an affair but he isn't. He's the "Heir Apparent" while his Younger Brother takes a backseat. (Shades Of Ridge & Thorne Forrester). He falls in love with Beth, who is as much "damaged" goods as he is. He spends his life thinking love means "rescuing" the people in his life and can't have a successful relationship. He and his Brothers have been Married To/Slept With the Same Woman at different times as well as his Father.
Sickly child, a spoiled "Prince" too "powerful"/responsible in lives of these 4 adults for their happiness; taught he was "all that" so seeds for a narcissim/codependency in him early on to make him view himself as self-assigned Rescuer.
Self-hatred if he "failed" in a codependent way to "protect" someone, since he lost his Mom, sense of family, Beth, identity. Never got to grieve Jackie or treat her like a mom and never got over that. Theme of sudden loss made him want to do all possible to guard against that type of agony. Ironically he helped create dramas due to impulsivity and anger, control issues, and identify confusion!
He was treated as a Pawn between his Parents. Elizabeth had now idea that Phillip wasn't her Bio Son, she thinks he's "hers". He was the subject of a Nasty Custody Battle and when Elizabeth was married to Mike Bauer he wasn't very nice to him being influenced by what Alan said. Co-Incidentally, Alan was married to Mike's Daughter Hope. Jackie only married Alan to get close to Phillip.

He named his daughter Elizabeth. . .Jackie was dead.
I think both Mothers had died when he was an adult.

These where the best years of Guilding Light. I watched from 1977-2001. From 1977-1982 where fantastic.
I was young myself but, this brings back memories :)

I know I wrote a lot but.....BY FAR to me, Phil was the greatest, juiciest of all characters ever written. Sorry, Shakespeare!

Whatever happened to Lezlie Dalton?

The "Grieving" over Jackie was so right on. I think that's why he doesn't have a problem with Emma having Two Mothers.
What year was this clip?
This clip is from spring of 1979.
What were Phillip's issues?
He was treated as a Pawn between his Parents. Elizabeth had now idea that Phillip wasn't her Bio Son, she thinks he's "hers". He was the subject of a Nasty Custody Battle and when Elizabeth was married to Mike Bauer he wasn't very nice to him being influenced by what Alan said.
