As the descendant of 3 convicts (including an Irish political prisoner & a minority Romany gypsy), a female Irish famine orphan who was shipped out here to work as a child servant, and Scottish victims of the highland clearances, it annoys me that my ancestors are labelled ‘colonisers’ instead of ‘refugees’, which is actually what they were. They were forced out of their countries by circumstances beyond their control, came here with nothing, and helped to build a nation. The whole of human history is a story of migration, suffering, and survival.

My forebears on both sides were transported in the 1820s to Port Arthur in Van Diemens Land for 7 years for petty theft. When they were released, they married and became servants and stable hands. They bootstrapped themselves through hard work and suffering until by the 1890s they had become moderately prosperous farmers at Tiberias in the Tasmanian Midlands. They had no privilege or welfare or social support after leaving gaol. They and so many others like them made up the founding guts of this great nation. Paying due respect to the aboriginal peoples we also should be proud of our own first people.

sorry to say it, but she isn't smart, except maybe smart in a way that she knows how to win people over with a fallacious and oversimplistic argument. If she really is of the minority in Australia who were descended from convicts, then her argument is completely without merit. The convicts were quickly emancipated, and given lands and every opportunity to prosper. The opposite happened with the indigenous people, who experienced systematic oppression, discrimination and hardship, and there is a huge wealth of research to support this. They experienced and continue to experience phenomenal inequality that is simply not comparable to anything that happened, on the whole, to the descendants of the convicts. Yes, people do ultimately need be responsible for their own lives moving forward, but that doesn't mean that injustices haven't happened, and should not be addressed.

I want the first nations to excel and succeed. This is the divide the vote has caused. The majority of Australians want equality. We don't want anyone to feel lesser as a human. Jacinta shows the potential of equality, the reality of equality. This woman is sooo strong for bringing a focus to equality, and not division. I do see a need to acknowledge the importance of Indigenous issues but we do. There have been so many issues already addressed, and that also has to be acknowledged. We are not a nation of haters! We are a nation who wants unity. Yes, there are a few racists, and that comes from both sides. We need acceptance not division.

And smallpox killed tens of thousands of indigenous people. In the Sydney area it was estimated to of halved the population. That really cut to the bone how wonderful colonialism was for the aboriginal.

@@pwillis1589 It is simply fanciful to believe that Australia would forever avoid colonialism, and thereby avoid smallpox, measles, tuberculosis....Lucky that Australia was not settled by the Spanish, French....
