My college professor made us make the sword and use your video as an introduction to the software without any other information or guidance. You seem like a pretty nice dude and I just wanted to let you know that this is apparently in some college class curriculum now and this was literally the best tutorial that terrible teacher showed us since he didn't know anything about the subject, I was thankful for your guidance and nice commentary.
Thank you sooooo much for this tutorial!!!! I was drawing the outlines using line tool and extruding it and looked hideous and never opened properly in mudbox. This tutorial just saved me from failing in the sculpting class!!! Owe you a beer man!!
Thanks! this video not only provide us knowing how to make this sword, but also teach us how to do the box modeling. I appreciate! Q_Q I make my own 3d sword, too
Hello, I see some of you commenting that the tutorial is too difficult and does not explain absolutely everything about the program. If you are having these issues, then perhaps consider gaining an education on the basic interface mechanics of 3ds Max. This is a basic tutorial on creating a 3d sword, it is not a beginner tutorial on how to make and render your first 3d cube. This, is not intended for beginners who just downloaded the program. Thanks! If you do, however, understand the most basic mechanics of the 3ds interface, then you are more than capable of learning from this video. Thank's for watching!
Thanks man, really helped. One question, though. When making the hilt, when the bevel setting were up and I tried to rotate, the bevel settings would disappear and it kind of screwed me up. Any way to make them not do that?
It was a pretty decent tutorial but I have some remarks on the sword itself. That groove you were talking about is called a fuller. The basic shape of the blade wasn't bad, it feels like by the appearance to be a hybrid between slashing and thrusting which is acceptable however you should have applied a distal taper to the blade. A distal taper is part of the blade geometry where the blade is thicker (in thickness not width) towards the guard and it gradually grows thinner towards the tip of the blade. Other than that the blade looks pretty nice, not too fancy but still appealing, too bad other game companies go over the top with their blades.
+Kevin Tunney You realize this is a tutorial (with emphasis on the word tutorial) that shows you how to start creating a basic sword right? Not a video on "How to create the best looking sword". So looks are completely irrelevant in this type of video. It's up to the viewer to take this information and go further with it. I do agree with you though, that most gaming companies go over the top with their designs of swords. That's one reason why I love CD Project Red (specifically the Witcher series). Their sword designs are realistic, simple, yet still amazing to use and look at. :)
at the base of Guard where you extruded the square instead You could you use the tool 'merge shape'.. you only need to create a circle and tool ask you to pick the shape and where you want it to apply... That's it. I recently came to know about this. It makes your workflow quite faster.
This is a great tutorial! Could you do one where you unwrap and texture it as well? Unwrapping in 3Ds is a mess, would be awesome if you did a tutorial on that
Hello, I don't know if this is a good tutorial for a newbie, but is he using any short commands that I should know about if I try this? It seems like he manually click a lot so I guess no?
Ahh, yes. I will do, I watched it for a bit and followed but I have been to busy to proceed my learning about this. I will watch the whole video (and others) eventually. Thanks for comment.
I don't 3d Model anymore, but I almost exclusively used it. I liked the visibility to it. I dont think I ever got much farter than the basic level, though!
wizard master I just went to watch your tutorials so I could skip this nonsense and learn from the superb master of all 3DS Max related things, but someone deleted all of your tutorials! Gasp! But that's ok. Because you taught the world that you're superior. And that's important.
Yeah, fast and easy? For beginners? I don't understand what it is with the 3D modeling community. Beginner does not mean hobby level of understanding. I have no idea how to use this piece of software, and you not explaining every little step does nothing for me. Like at the 3:20 mark, that little thing you did creating a new segment, how the hell do you do that? There's no visible indication of what you are doing, thus I can only assume you do not know how to dictate your actions. You did that thing earlier in the video, yet you didn't explain it then. I swear to god, if you're going to make a tutorial EXPLAIN WHAT YOU ARE DOING. Jesus.
Alright take a deep Breath. A segment in 3D is Segs. that it. When you create a box or something like that. go to "Parameter" it under the Length, Widths and Height. or in this case. Click on the Object and go to Modify and it should be there at the bottom. No need to get angry. There are many way to find things like a google on Segment in 3D Max. that it. or ask someone in this video comment Or ask the creator of this video but Nicely.
make sure you've changed it to editable poly and select vertices on modify tab.select long vertical lines all around the object (upper one) or u can just select two then click on ring on the modify tab, this selects those vertical lines then go to small box on the right to connect and move it up. this creates new segments
it works both ways. the videos im watching that are used for the gaming course over explain everything. 2 min video ends up being over an hour. ALL of these beginner tutorials assume you have had some experience with box modelling. what you are looking for is a beginner guide to 3ds max. for me, he is over explaining things.
I think you think that modeling in 3D is learned in four days. The tutorial you have to watch first, it is the interface program use. And then, start to learn to modeling.
Yeah I'm with you! I could've learned so much more from this video if there were explosions, large animated text, and dubstep at the beginning of it. Without that, my think noodle simply failed to activate. *le giggle*

Thats pretty crazy. Well I'm glad so many people are getting some value out of it. Thanks for letting me know!
Thank you sooooo much for this tutorial!!!! I was drawing the outlines using line tool and extruding it and looked hideous and never opened properly in mudbox. This tutorial just saved me from failing in the sculpting class!!! Owe you a beer man!!
thanks dude, i did it on my first try following this video of yours
Thank you for spending time to give out free knowledge to those who seek it. Ignore all these trolls saying otherwise.
The groove is called the "fuller" and it's used to reduce blade weight without sacrificing strength.
Great tutorial, now I can start modelling all kinds of weapons including fireweapons.
Thanks! this video not only provide us knowing how to make this sword, but also teach us how to do the box modeling.
I appreciate! Q_Q
I make my own 3d sword,too
still helping out college kids even 6 years after dropping the video!
Seriously it's very helpful.. thanks u very much for this tutorial...keep posting new tutorial.. it's very helpful...
Nice tutorial! (Also yes, the idea of the groove being to redirect blood is a misconception. It's all about weight and reinforcement.)

Thank you for the video that I can make my first sword!
I think you teaching very well.

This helped me with my game art and design course at ASU, so thank you.
ASU?
Its a fuller and its not for blood to come out but to stop suction from stopping you from pulling out the sword

Nice tutorial, easy to understand.
Thank you for the well explained tutorial!
This is a great tutorial! Could you do one where you unwrap and texture it as well? Unwrapping in 3Ds is a mess, would be awesome if you did a tutorial on that
For the handle, wouldn't chamfer be the best option to round off the edges of the hilt or attaching a cylinder?
nice tutorial, i had to learn the command key at the same time but got the exact result. Thanks!
What unit of length are you using?
Thanks for your tutorial i just started 3ds Max today and your tutorial was very helpfull thanks alot hope you do more
i know you're not a pro but you're just good for a beginner.
What did you press to scale the image down?
loved the tutorial, but my symmetry doesnt work like that D:
just looks like a copy in the same spot. any help?
Good job Kiddo!!
i cannot select individual polygons when you do when you start work on the hilt :(
can you tell me why ?
How do I select more than one edge for the blood indent thing?
Can i do it with Autodesk 3ds max 2013?
Wow,thanks man! You saved my life bro.
Not bad. My only remarks would be to use inset and extrude a little more
What were your computer specifications when you made this video ?
thanks it gave me lot of information of modeling
tnx you for your teachings and knowledge

You helped me a lot with this tutorial
Thanks
Cool! I have a question though. What other methods are there, if not box modeling?
Well to be honest i dont like your sword design much, but i think its still pretty good tutorial! Thank you.
so great !
I am pretty advanced, but I never used the clay view before. It is a lot easier to see what you are doing.
I don't 3d Model anymore, but I almost exclusively used it. I liked the visibility to it. I dont think I ever got much farter than the basic level, though!
wow
this is really cool!
thanks dude!!!
I'm having a problem where when I create the polygon, I cant edit it and I cant select anything but the box itself HELP
Great tutorial!
I'm really new to 3DS Max, what advantages to I gain from having Edged Faces enabled?
Ross I am superb at max and this as a tutorial is useless
wizard master I just went to watch your tutorials so I could skip this nonsense and learn from the superb master of all 3DS Max related things, but someone deleted all of your tutorials! Gasp! But that's ok. Because you taught the world that you're superior. And that's important.
At 19:54 what institue.com ??
gameinstitute.com :)
@@BMRWilliams thanks
Wow this one is realy cool !
how did you make the sword slimmer in one action?
Slimmer?
Enoro at first the sword is too thick to be able to cut things so he makes the whole sword "sharper" in one action, how does he do this?
Aaron vredenburg I suppose it was the mirrored effect and he just dragged in one side of the polygons?
Aaron vredenburg Didn't he just scale the object by dragging one axis. That's what i did.
Use inset on a polygon
Good Video needed this!
thank you so much really nice and easy ....
it is very good this tutorial
Thank you for the tutorial!! It helped a lot :) !
Thanks man, that was a very helpful video. :D
i cant use symmetry it crashes evry time i klick on it
Nice tutorial!
Nice shorts *thumbs up*
do i have to make an account for 3DS Max ?
nope
Man, you are a fucking GOD, Thanks. It's Works very well. You save me in my class.
7:20
would've loved if you could unwrap it as well but thanks
Thanks man :) It probably will be cause, that I will pass exam.
thank you!
thanks
Thx!)

they say that groove is for bloodletting.
it's actually to reduce the total mass of the sword without losing structural strenght.
sounds logical
The groove is called a Blood Groove. It is indeed used to bleed the target.
It isn't, it's proper name is a fuller, used to lighten the weight of the blade.
Amazing
3s nao
Everything is ok so far, but bevel does some weird things. Edit: nevermind lol
