At the time I was 18 years old.. I became a fan at 5.. I like many were dying for them to finally get to the playoffs. That was the most deflating loss I ever witnessed including the wild card rematch 10 years later. Even more than the Super Bowl loss to the Rams 14 months ago. I'll never forget when Carson went down

They beat Pittsburgh at Pittsburgh a month before this 38-31. They could've gone all the way. That injuries is one of the biggest what ifs in NFL history.
What makes this game the most painful loss for Bengals fans is that the Steelers would go on to win the Super Bowl. I thought this would motivate the management of the Bengals to aim for the Super Bowl championship but that did not happen.
And yeah, it was John Kitna we beat in this game. But then we beat the Indianapolis Colts in Indianapolis against Peyton Manning and the 14-2 Colts. We were legit. Then we beat the #2 seed Denver Broncos and the #1 seed from the NFC, the Seahawks. When you have some class, you deserve to have a championship team. And that's what Steelers fans and the Steelers organization have. Learn from us, Cincinnati.

they did not beat the seahawks the refs did and peyton manning is one of the largest chokers of all time no offense to him he is a great qb.
The refs only made 7, S-E-V-E-N-, calls against SEA that game, and all but two were definitely correct. It WAS (100%) offensive pass interference, and Ben did (very narrowly) make that TD (and even if he doesn't, 1 millimeter with Jerome Bettis); the only truly bad call was Hassleback called on a chop, was just a tackle, then there was a holding penalty where the defender MAY (not clearly) have been offsides, and that would have only been offsetting, and they turned the ball over on the next play, so it didn't matter. They lost by 11 points, even if you spot them a TD, they lose by 4, give them a FG, still lose by one, you have to GIVE them 12 points in order for them not to lose. Know what might have helped them win? Those two missed FG's, SEA lost that all on their own. People still crying about the refs, ignoring the facts.
And just in case you try to say that one of the refs admitted to messing the game up, he only said he messed up a couple calls LATE in the game, not any of the other calls.

Back in the day, I was a City of Pittsburgh firefighter, and I was at the 34 Engine house when the phone rang and it was a firefighter from Cincinnati by the name of Bill Huston, if my memory serves me correctly. He wanted to make a "tee-shirt" bet. If Cincinnati won our firehouse would send the members of their firehouse, City of Pittsburgh working fire tee-shirts. If we won they would send us Cincinnati fire tee-shirts. Pittsburgh was the underdog in this game. However, when we made that bet, I told Mr. Huston " you just sealed the Bengal's fate! I never, never never, lose a tee-shirt bet!" The rest is history! If we would have not made that bet ,,,,,who knows????? Incidentally, I still have my shirt! Nice shirt!

I probably wouldn't hate the Steelers as much to this day if Cowher didn't try to rub it in afterward, given the fact that they won because they injured what could have been our franchise QB. This year was special, really a shame that ended this way. Fast forward 10 years and when we play the Steelers in the playoffs in the exact same game our starting QB is injured as well. Go figure. In all fairness though, it's not like the loss of Dalton could ever compare to this one though. Though I'm not a fan of Tomlin at least he had class when addressing Marvin after the game

they smoked us in the 70s we ran them in the 80s they owned us in the 90's we started to win some in the early 2000s but they still had the upper hand. Right now it can go either way in any game between these teams.

People trying to act like Kimo did that on purpose, you can see he's coming off a block, he had no real history of things like that, it was just an unfortunate accident. Like when Burfict blew Bell's ACL out a few years back, yeah, he's the dirtiest guy in the league, but that one was just a hit that went wrong, like Kimo. You can see it on the dude's face he didn't mean to hurt the guy.
Steelers fan here. I agree with your assessment. There was no malevolent intention by von Oelhoffen to cause that catastrophic injury to Palmer. Palmer had a chance to look at the tape later in the off-season and cleared von Oelhoffen of such.

In 3 of his last 5 seasons with the Bengals, he threw almost 30 TD's, 21 was the least, except the year he missed most of; his peak with them was in the year he injured himself, but that was more the exception, when the team itself was at it's very peak. His performance was still about consistent after the injury, his first year in Oakland was the only really bad season, but that was years later...and was Oakland. It might have changed his career in the sense of it was the best chance for the Bengals to win a Super Bowl (though I don't think they win regardless), but performance wise, he really never wavered, the next year was probably one of the top 5 years of his career.

2005 was a great season for Steelers and fans very exciting I remember having to win on road at Cinci,Indianapolis,then Denver to get to Super Bowl.Looking back one wouldn't even think that to be possible.
Has anyone noticed how that LB from Cincinnati dove at Ben's leg to knock him out of the game in the 1st quarter. When you put how Levon Bells knee been injured the last 2 years against Cincinnati and missing the playoffs for 2 years in a row now and what happened last Sunday to Ben, it proves Cincinnati is a bunch of punk criminals that shouldn't be playing. That dive at Ben's knee and the helmet to Bells knee weren't accidents. They should be kicked out of the league. Thats complete BS!
