These kinds of racial studies are a mix between being hilarious for how ridiculous they were and being terrifying for how seriously they were taken.
Look up forensic dentistry. Skeletal measurements can be very reliable in identifying someone. Then, based on that information, a clay artist will use average tissue thickness reference charts for the given race to reconstruct a face. I don't think anyone has done reliably research on reference values for any ethnicity as a sub-division of any race, though.

For those wondering: Forensic dentists and pathologists still do use hard tissue (aka skeletal) measurements to determine someone's race if they can't retrieve any DNA samples from a body. I don't think any reliable reference data exists for ethnicity as a sub-division of race, though.
There are definitive genetic markers expressed through distinctive phenotypes, it is the conceptual understanding of humans that is often wrong
AI will fix this issue and be able to tell your exact ethnic group from something as little as the structure of your blood vessels, your iris or the shape of your finger bones.
Some of these models already exist.
You must understand that it is all caused by the slow process of speciation and environmental adaptation.
An example: Northern people have smaller faces to warm air and hold onto more heat more efficiently, Southern people have slightly larger ones to exchange more air in order to cool their bodies and increase metabolic function under heat stress.
This is easily visible. Smaller differences exist in ethnicities closer related to one another and those shape a part of our understanding of ethnicities, as we subconsciously profile people based on their looks.
However, while the overall genetic trend holds true, it does not take into account dietary and postural issues that lead to extremely widespread crowding, shrinking of the maxilla and related dental issues in, for instance, most Western children.
As such, measurements can not be relied on to determine someones ethnic group, even if the measurement has been shown to be highly correlated to ethnicity, especially when the measurement is of the face, which is highly variable and extremely dependent on environmental factors.

Poor kid. I can imagine how uncomfortable this must have made her feel. I spent some of my early childhood in hospital & had various other illnesses over the years & I’ve had several examinations. Nothing as severe as this, but to this day even little check-ups by doctors always make me feel like a lab rat. Hate it.

This is massively off topic, but I'm fascinated by the fact that "three" and "two" are so similar in English, but "four" is completely different. It seems like we should have borrowed the whole number sequence at once, instead of at random. Linguistics is fun!! (Also "intact" sounds very similar too.)
Different root languages. Four has a Germanic root, two has a Latin one, three could go either way. English isn't a language, it's the kidnapped children of five other languages stacked in one trenchcoat.
Four is actually very similar in Swedish and England. I'm not sure what the comment above is talking abou as two is from proto-germanic "twai" - although it goes back further too, with "duo" (latin and greek for 2) being related by all these languages being descended from Proto Indo European "dwoh". Three is also from Proto Indo European, with both Germanic languages and romance (latin) languages having some form of "three" / "dre" / "tre" / "troi". All very similar.
Four in Swedish is "Fyra". Perhaps the "a" at the end makes it sound somewhat different. Just like two and three, it's related to latin Quattro. Doesn't sound like it, but in proto indo european it would have been something like "Kwetor", which became "quatro" (kwot-ro) and something like "kfwedor" in proto germanic. That slowly reduced into simple fedwor > fewor > four. In German it's Veir, and pronounced pretty much the same but with an e sound instead of a o sound.
The english number system is actually entirely germanic, although it has similarities to french, spanish and italian because well, ALL european languages (apart from Basque, Estonian, Finnish and Hungarian) were the same language about 6000 years ago.
"Four" in Swedish only sounds different, mostly because of a specific pronunciation. "Fyra" reads like "fyoo-rah"

yes this should be done with respect for the people involved and all voluntary. No the measurements should not be used to prove "superiority/ inferiority." But the measurements are useful for learning about history. By learning these measurements we know what some groups of people looked like back then in various countries. As we all know people from other places move somewhere else and become a dominating population in a place they did not originate from.

Since she was Sami girl she was examined to compare among other Sami people, and then to be separated from the swedish people. You can hear the doctor call her a lappish, it's a derogatory word for Sami people. Swedish people used to discriminate sami and not let them among swedes, they saw them as lessers, though they were the original tribes of the north.

because it was weird. eugenics and racial hygiene pseudoscience. by taking measurements of face and skull they believed they could determine things from them and usually they had some arbitrary lines for either minimum or maximum of eugenic standard. its all very unscientific.
