They took the versions they liked best, but they are not the first to remake the fairytales either. Please do not be disrespectful to the original stories by saying they come from a 1812 book, when they are far older and have lost their original versions to time. These are Hungerian folktales, they come before Brothers Grimm.
Many different cultures have similar stories to each other. "Cinderella" in particular is used to compare, contrast & generate graphs in school for young children.
