- World Cup was one of the top 3 tournaments besides Olympic and World Championship. It was halted since 2019 and replaced by Olympic qualification. Top 3 teams in World Cup got tickets to Olympic year after. Rule in World Cup was round-robin and 12 teams participated including Japan as a host. It held after each continental championship. 5 continents top 2 + Japan + one wild card which decided by FIVB formed 12 teams.
Post-Match Commentary :
Italy remained many old players in 2011. #15 Antonella Del Core (31yo, 1.8m), #14 Eleonora Lo Bianco (32yo, 1.71m), #17 Simona Gioli (34yo, 1.85m) played more than 10 years in national team. Young players included #16 Lucia Bosetti (22yo, 1.75m) & #13 Valentina Arrighetti (26yo, 1.85m). Italy didn't play very well in 2010-2011 until World Cup 2011. Mainly because there was a Argentina Italian nationality player appeared in the squad in this tournament - #8 Carolina Costagrande (31yo, 1.88m). In Day 1, Italy won Japan 3:1, #8 scored 19 points in that game. In this match, she was again the most scored player - 27 points in 5 sets game with 39% (26/66) attack success rate. The other two scored players were #17 & #13, 16 & 13 points respectively. #8 was the MVP in this tournament.
Germany with this coach been entered the 5th year. Germany did some surprise sometimes but still the 2 tier amongst European teams. In 2011, their legendary player #15 Angelina Grün (32yo, 1.85m) was back to the team. #14 Margareta Kozuch (25yo, 1.86) was the key and core player of the team. #11 Christiane Fürst (26yo, 1.93m) who was the 2006 & 2010 World Championship best blocker was in the team. #15 Maren Brinker (25yo, 1.84m) was relatively new but experienced. With this German squad composition, it's their golden time and should get some good result. #14 got 22 points while #7 got 16 points. Gemany made 33 mistakes in 5 sets while Italy only 15. Blocking and serve both performed better in German side.
