Great learning experience but bloody hell the interviewer does undermine the intelligence of the speaker. We know what she means but constantly correcting her is NOT a good look. And then talking actors being ROBUST enough seemed like an excuse to not give the actor space. A lot of leading questions - as per he had his own point of view before he asked the question as opposed to being GENUINELY CURIOUS. He clearly isn’t an actor and isn’t that interested in the specifics of the actors process. But it’s interesting. In the end - she had to give up and say things like “yes of course” and “you’re right” and “there’s no point moaning about it” and “what do you think” because it’s exhausting.. I mean he cited that his OWN questions were good ones which HE was going to answer!!! Talk about overbearing!! It is doubly exhausting for the actor who is constantly in an emotional world. He may as well have had her as a groupie to nod in agreement. Ew.
I think it comes from the fact that he is a long-time director of hers who’s collaborated with her on many projects (Mike Leigh). He knows her pretty well and feels more comfortable probing her on certain topics. Knowing that, I didn’t get the sense that he was undermining her at all, but instead that they were two close colleagues wrestling with the topic. Just my impression.
Did you just say Mike Leigh 'clearly isn’t an actor and isn’t that interested in the specifics of the actors process' ?! He is a trained actor and a director FAMOUS for his intense and careful work with actors. He knows more about acting than the majority of the directors in the English language!
Mike Leigh is famously a difficult old duffer. He's a genius but not hugely likeable from his public appearances.
