    I love watching your videos! I start radiologic technology August 23rd and I’m so excited. The program was pretty easy to get into in my area! I start with a couple prerequisites- intro to radiology, imaging procedures, and intermediate algebra. As long as I pass those with a C or better I can move on! I already have anatomy and English done

    As someone who has done ct/x-ray for 25 years you will soon learn you don’t need to carry a bag that big unless you are using it for your gym bag and lunch bag. I only take my purse and a small lunch bag to work. Although not everyone is as lucky as I am, I have my own desk so I can leach a charger, toothbrush/toothpaste, deodorant in my desk.

    I’m so glad I came across your channel. I’ve been considering applying to a local rad tech program (the only one in my state). Idk if this is a common concern but is there an increased risk for cancer as a rad tech? Am I just worrying too much? I looked into it but only found old studies which did show increased risk :( I’m sure technology has advanced since those studies were conducted though.

    • @JuliaKristine
      @JuliaKristine  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's not something that is a large concern for me! To give you a little insight into the radiology department and how we protect ourselves - we stand behind a lead-lined booth during most exams, and if we are in the direct room (fluoroscopy, surgery, holding a patient during an exam, etc), we have to wear lead protective aprons and thyroid collars which helps to attenuate any possible scatter radiation that could reach us. Also, our occupational dose is monitored through a device called a dosimeter. There are guidelines set by the NCRP for how much radiation exposure workers can annually receive to the lens of the eye, skin, extremities, whole body, etc. Nurses, scrub techs, surg techs, anesthesiologists, surgeons, and more may receive daily exposure too from the surgical x-ray units and portable x-ray units.
      Rad techs who were working before 1950 have an increased cancer risk - technology was not as advanced then as it is today! Plus I'm not sure how much shielding was used back then as compared to today. Hope that helps a little :)

      @@JuliaKristine I’ll look into it I actually haven’t heard of it even though I’ve been researching all these different things about being rad tech. I’m prenursing right now but I really don’t think it’s the right career for me. I looked into being a rad tech and it seems like a much better fit. I would want train to do mammograms. Anyways I’m scared of switching because I could get into the nursing program by fall 2021 but I have no idea how long it’ll take for me to get into the rad tech program since it’s also competitive. I’m already 20 yrs old I could be 22 by the time I might be accepted into the rad tech program that feels too far from now and that’s if I even get in 😭.

      @@lorenan I started my program when I was 22 and graduated when I was 24! It's never too late to start pursuing your dream career! The "oldest" in our class was 34 at graduation.
      Be confident in yourself and aim to get the best grades that you can in your pre-requisite courses! I had to apply twice because I was missing a lab class since I was a transfer student. It's not the end of the world to have to apply again :)
