    It is so good to see a family work together. I have always been impressed by the beauty, intelligence, and knowledge of the young lady. Now I am pleased to see that her husband is a good match for her. I hope that he understands how lucky he is to have her. God bless and keep you all safe in the world that is coming.

    good start - you need "baby saver" wire about 3 in high along the front, back and between the cages - the babies are initially small enough to fall/get through the 1x2 wire.

    • @richardmang2558
      @richardmang2558 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had one fall through today. Two days old. Fortunately I found it, cold but still alive. I was checking the nest box and realized one was missing and it took a few minutes to find it. Baby-saver wire would have prevented this. The cage does have sheet metal urine guards all around the inside except under the door, which is where the kit must have fallen through.

    Very nice video, extremely interesting and nicely explained. Oh how I wish you were living somewhere near me! Apart from the fact that my DIY is zero, I am now disabled with hip and knee problems and have had to give up keeping my lovely birds - geese, Muscovy ducks and hens. I had about 45 in total but disability stopped me from looking after them properly as I can no longer bend down to clean out the houses. Its not fair on the birds, so I sadly had to find new homes/owners for them. If only you were around, I am sure you could have devised housing that were off the ground and easy to maintain/clean out.
    Always enjoy your videos - great way of life and you always seem so happy and content. All the best from Ireland.

    and yes you CAN put rabbit poop directly on your garden, but, its better if you let it dry out, and then mix it 50-50 with old straw/hay and sandy soil, its AWESOME garden mix that way...

      When it gets cold I have heating lamps clamped inside milk crates pointing downward from the top, then the whole pin completely covered by the large tarp to keep the heat inside.

  • @robaldridge6505
    @robaldridge6505 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    your off to a great start, if you build 'house boxes' for your rabbits they will do OK into freezing temps, just a plywood box twice as big as the bunny, with a floor and a roof, you only need to put it in during cold weather, so they dont eat the wood..(as much)

    • @kthomp55
      @kthomp55 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really good idea. The rabbits will pee on the wood.

    • @GamesByJDK
      @GamesByJDK 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not if you take the time to box train them. They will pee/poop in the same place every time if you train them to use one particular spot. Worth spending the time on your buns to get them to do that.

      I used a small pump to keep water circulating. The water was routed to go back to the water tank. In the Winter, I used an aquarium heater in the water tank to keep it from freezing. It worked well. I was in NC, and it never froze. In Summer, you can put frozen 2 Ltr frozen water bottles in the tank to help keep it cool. I found using a xlg cooler to be a great water tank.

    Great job with the cages n stuff. Good efficient design that saves cost and work. I used to raise rabbits. Won first prize in the fair and 3rd in state. That wasn't about raising them, just about playing with my really nice looking rabbit until it was tame as a puppy lol. I learned a lot though. They need an enclosed hutch to stay warm, especially babies in a nest, and because left out in the open without an escape it makes them crazy and they do stupid things that harm themselves and babies. Also the pee has a lot of fertilizer value. I like the poo mixed with the pee, works great. May get too strong and you have to mix with some water, but a lot of Nitrogen in the pee. Pee will also cause a problem if allowed to all go to the ground, kill the soil, but it will be good soil for the high Nitrogen content if you want to use it as fertilizer.

    Good video. I raised rabbits on our dairy farm in Wisconsin for over 20 years. Your set up is really nice, but I would put a piece of wood across the top on the back of your rabbit boxes. It's a nice place for them to jump up on and get off that wire for a while, plus it creates more of a den for them and they are a den animal, and will be much happier. I'd also make sure that plastic tub is food rated. Most of those are not. I think a 5 gallon pail would be much better and MUCH easier to keep clean and swap out. I'm sure you were joking, but those New Zealand white rabbits will never reach that 20 pound weight. In fact, when mine hit 5 pounds or so live weight, they were in the freezer, and that only took about 2 months or so from birth to freezer. Keeping them any longer and the weight they gain doesn't justify the feed they eat and I think the meat is much better when they're young. The only other thing is make sure no predator can get near them. Even if they can't get to them, they can kill the rabbits from shock that the rabbit will have from fear of a fox, dog, raccon, opposum, cats, anything like that trying to get to them at night. Keep up the great work.

    2 suggestion.
    1. the tarp needs to be open on the ends for air flow.
    2. in the summer we freeze plastic water bottles and place them in their cage. they can move to the bottle or away as they want. we had several days around 100 degrees in oregon. switch out daily.

    great idea on the cage setup. you may decide later to get away from plywood for nest boxes. they love to eat it. maybe its the glue in it , i dont know. one by pine seems better as far as the chewing. one guy does his out of the powder coated shelving that you buy at lowes , etc. i think your idea is more economical. good job.

  • @stevehaile3325
    @stevehaile3325 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I personally prefer j clips to hog rings 1. I believe they are stronger and 2 they don't poke or snag the rabbits or you, also you might want to use 16 ga wire for your bottoms and 14 ga. Baby saver wire for your sides, so you don't lose any kits out the sides, put some kind of perch in the cage's so moms can get up away from babies from time to time and some kind of shade over all them as rabbits sunburn easily. Otherwise your off to god start and I like you watering system. I put a flat chunk of oak 6" x 12" in each cage it give the rabbits both something to lay on as well as something to chew on. Good luck and Thanks for your video's.

    I couldn't imagine keeping rabbits. There are so many running in the fields it only takes half an hour with a lamp and a rifle to fetch home 3 or 4 for the table.
    My neighbour's cat catches one every other day and drags it home, often alive and often as big or bigger than itself. The neighbour just drops them in the bin for the refuse to collect 😥
    They aren't quite a plague but last year they caused me to have to shore up the back wall of my quarry where they had undermined it so badly.
    We had mixy really bad for several years and the population plummeted but they seem immune nowadays.
    Mostly English people don't eat rabbit for some reason. Even country folks think it is poor meat.
    I just like the fun of stalking and shooting them and the bonus of a fried or stewed bunny for supper. Only I eat it, can't give one away to friends or neighbours.
    Another great video, you guys really nail it every time.

    • @SurvivalHT
      @SurvivalHT  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. Rabbit is actually one of the healthiest meats you can eat. Lean, high-protein, low-sodium, and tasty! People here hunt them a lot and lots of predators eat them too so the while ones are not as prolific here as in Europe though we do have them.
