Fun fact: 100 gecs and BrokeNCYDE are friends
EDIT: plus, Laura and Dylan have publicly spoken about taking influence from that era of MySpace scene/AltPress/Warped Tour bands, with Breathe Carolina, I See Stars, and 3OH!3 being given shout outs. They had Craig Owens from Chiodos on their remix record. The influence they've taken from that whole scene along with their friendship with BrokeNCYDE make the comparison more sensible than it seems.

Sahil Arora Normally, in a review capacity, I would agree with you saying it’s just opinion, but we’re talking about facts on this topic. This isn’t subjective. Gecs know BrokenCyde and have a healthy relationship with them. They’ve _very clearly_ been inspired by them in _at least_ a loose capacity (not all inspiration has to be super up-front and immediately identifiable, after all), Anthony’s just kinda wrong on this one.
Not sayin’ that like it’s a moral failing or anything, I’m not gonna go ape and call him “full of shit” or anything over this, but it’s just not something that’s within the realm of subjectivity given what’s known about Gecs’ and BrokenCyde’s relationship and mutual respect.

Personally I've felt that 100 gecs is a lot more similar to other MySpace artists such as Dot dot curve and jeffery star. I can also see some resemblance to early Skrillex. In my opinion I don't think 100 gecs is anything new or "revolutionary", just a modern take and reupholstered version of sounds and ideas from the MySpace era. I do believe that 100 gecs won't be the only new artist to bring back sounds and ideas from the MySpace era. Example of this is artist like X and juice wrld both stating blood on the dance floor as an influence. I think part of reason this is happening is because even artist/bands from the MySpace era have strayed into more mainstream pop and hip hop. I feel that we're going to see more crunkcore, post-hardcore, pop punk, and ska influenced artists/bands emerge soon

If 100 gecs owes anything to anyone, it's unquestionably Frank Zappa (esp. early Zappa e.g. "Freak Out"). There is no more accurate comparison. Gecs are doing what Zappa did, just with a different object of ridicule (and ofc therefore sonically much different).
Also I wouldn't dismiss the comparison between City Morgue and Limp Bizkit. I think there's definitely at least an indirect link there. Ofc I find Limp Bizkit particularly underrated and innovative so to me that's not an insult.

  • @coldmountainsaga

Lol, a lot of people in the comments just can't be nuanced. They are not exactly like brokencyfe, but they obviously have some scene influence. Gecs are many many times more creative than a lot of those bands I listened to, but it's no mystery who they pull influence from. Attack Attack! and I Set My Friends On Fire definitely had a lot of similar sounds back in the day, but gecs has had the last decade of the trap and soundlcoud rap to also look back upon and incorporate into their music. I personally like gecs, but I also grew up listening to scene, punk, and ska in highschool, got into soundcloud hip-hop afterwards, and find their reflection of the the last 15 years of music to be genuinely fresh, funny, catchy, and deeply enjoyable. Many, probably most, don't have the context to enjoy their music as such, but just because you don't like something doesn't mean that it isn't done well, done creatively, or done genuinely. I've enjoyed seeing them flip so many of the musical trends that I have (admittedly) turned my back on due to shame and embarrassment of my highschool self, but they have shown me that there were ideas and sounds from those scenes that I really did enjoy, and which still bring me joy today. Do I think that they are brokencyde? No. I think that 100 gecs is born from a completely different cultural context and no matter how much they ARE pulling from mid-late 00s scene music, they ALSO are pulling from the last 10 years of pop, hip hop, and electronic music, and that's just undeniable. There are similarities ofc, and gecs has mentioned before their influences, but there COULDN'T have been a 100 gecs in 2009 because 2009 was not 2019. Meme and internet culture, music culture, political culture, and just all culture in general HAVE changed so much that acts like 100 gecs can only be the product of this time. I don't know why people want to be so reductive about everything just because they don't like 100 gecs. They're good, genuinely innovative, and definitely will not be everyone's cup of tea.

And I'm a classically trained pianist who produces music in my spare time before you come at me with that uppity snobbish attitude of "oh you just don't know music then". I can't stand music snobs. I’ve said for years that I’m very accepting of other people’s music tastes. I may give a light teasing to some people, but it’s all in good fun and I try to make that obvious. Anybody can listen to whatever they want to and that’s absolutely A-ok; in fact, I think it’s amazing that other people can hear the exact same waveforms and interpret it an entirely different way and have the exact opposite reaction. It makes life interesting and I wouldn’t change my mindset for the world and I think the world would be a better place if we all took this approach.
That being said if you even remotely like Brokencyde un-ironically you’re a fucking degenerate.

Just wanted to thank Fantano for making this video. I somehow missed all the talk about 100 Gecs the first time around. This was the first time I had ever heard of them.
I went and checked out their music and was instantly confused. My initial reaction was disgust, but I also kind of liked it? However I moved on for a couple of weeks. Then randomly one day I revisited their music and went down the rabbit hole.
I absolutely love them. The strange thing is I can read thousands of negative comments and reviews and find all those points valid - yet at the same time my brain doesn’t agree with them.
Dylan Brady is IMO crazy talented. After reading countless interviews with him and checking out his solo work - it’s clear the guy is a talented producer / musician.
So at least to me as someone who is an outsider who only now discovered them, I’m not really getting all the “takes” that their music is chaotic and random. When I hear their album it’s overall cohesive and I understand clearly what they were going for production wise. I see the decision they made and why they made it.
There is like two spots on the album where the music is random gibberish and it’s not even that long. Yet the way people go on about this album they describe it as every track is this chaotic mess like someone switching channels on the TV. But I just don’t get that.
Also as a side stance, I am not someone who is political at all. But I find it fascinating that Laura is trans, hates her voice because it doesn’t match the gender she identifies with - and then uses auto correct software to make her voice match the pitch she’s always wanted to have.
100 Gecs don’t make this aspect front and center and she no doubt just wants to be treated normally and doesn’t want the music to be identified by that. But I personally think it’s amazing that their music allows her to step up to the stage and the music tools gives her the voice to be who she wants to be.
And this is coming from a conservative asshole who genuinely is not socially conscious or cares about causes. But at least to me, I think it’s amazing that someone can do that.
The way I see it digital artists like Hatsune Miku are insanely popular. Literally 80k people stadiums will sell out in Japan to see a hologram.
They are taking that aspect of music and combining it with the human factor and making it live. And I see nothing wrong with that. That said I 100% get it if the “tone” and sound of the vocals isn’t for some and they find it grating. So I can step back and recognize that aspect.
But that’s just my 2 cents. I think people are really underrating them as musicians in terms of thinking this is all a chaotic mess. I think there is more purpose to it and Dylan Brady knows what he is doing. I highly recommend people check out his solo work. I really think future albums form 100 Gecs is going to surprise them as I have no doubt his skills as a producer are getting better and better and we will get a more polished record as they grow as a band.

I love experimental stuff but come on now, they are a recently purchased Vespa that people are comparing to a well-oiled machine like Death Grips which is pretty ridiculous.
