Support your local newspaper! Btw, a small local paper The North Shore Leader, had the story about George Santos before the election. Paying attention to that small paper would have saved the taxpayers the salary that was wasted on him. The New York Times picked up the story, but after the election. Read your local paper! 🗽

Why? A website provides the same local news to far more people without wasting paper, ink, and time. News can be presented a day earlier. Images are sharper online. Articles are more easily "clipped" and saved. There are reasons newspapers are dying and they are good ones. Why hide local news behind subscriptions that benefit so few?

I am sorry the bridge collapse cost lives. What I cannot wrap my head around is how the entire steel span let go. In slowmo sections of steel structure let go at the pylon's opposite side and snapped before the unsupported section hanging on air at the cargo ship side of the pylon (right of screen from ship) actually collapsed. It's like snapping a guitar string and two other strings insta-snap with the extra load.

I'm a sailor, the question is, why was this mega size transport ship entering the channel at night, without having tugs boats standing by, espicially if they were having generator or engine problems. I would have sailed back and forth staying outside the channel, or just anchored outside the channel till morning. I especially would not have approached the tight channel area and going under a bridge in the dark. It just shows a lack of seamanship. It was just dumb.

Today there are NO daily newspapers in Tampa Bay and only a handful of weekly's. The Closest thing is the Tampa Bay Times which is published twice weekly. The current Sunday edition is a quarter of the size of the former daily version from twenty years ago and the price is more than double what it was twenty years ago. The last time I looked the classified section which used to be over 20 pages long is down to under half a page. There are laws that require people to post legal notices of certain kinds in a minimum of three daily newspapers and those laws can't be obeyed since they no longer exist so certain legal obligations are now impossible which leaves people in limbo for certain things.

Tug boats are only used to guide certain kinds of vessels into position to be piloted under their own power. The ship would not normally use tugs to go under that bridge and out to sea. They requested tugs when they lost power due to the inability to move on their own and the tugs would have been used in such an emergency had they gotten there in time. I think a more significant question is why they didn't drop anchor the moment they lost power. I am not an expert but if you are headed toward a structure and lost power and needed to stop the logical thing would be to drop anchor. Normally you simply steer out of the way or reverse engines if needed. But without power of course the only thing left would be to drop anchor though I'm guessing the anchor system is power assisted which with loss of power would prevent a dropping of anchor. If that is the case then I would be curious why there is not a system in place to allow for an emergency dropping of anchor in the event power is lost. Dropping anchor is easier than hoisting it. I would think it could be done simply by manually pulling out a lynch pin and letting gravity do the rest. Though it could be that with an anchor and chain of that size a controlled dropping is needed. Perhaps this will be addressed in future ship designs if this is the case.

Interesting thought. Whales and other cetaceans have very good navigational skills. Dolphins have been known to pick up cell phones dropped in 40 feet of water and hand them back to the person who dropped them and I'm talking wild dolphins. while there are always dangers to cetaceans in the ocean, for the most part, they are pretty good at avoiding them. Fishing nets and fishing equipment seems to be a common exception. I would say that whales are far more in danger from random fishing equipment in that area than the downed bridge and debris. They can see bits of metal easily but netting not so much.
