  • How to Build Utility Ships! In this episode of Space Camp, we're going a bit more in-depth to building small ships. In a prior episode, we looked at how to build a super-basic ship. Now we're gonna see how to use the same principals to make a ship that can actually do stuff! I'm talking about miners and welders!

Suggestion for next video: Show how to charge a dead battery on a small ship, because if the battery has no power it can't power the connector to recharge itself

Small Reactors or Solar Panels for Vanilla, although I use a Treadmill Mod that allows me to climb on a Treadmill (Open Cockpit Passenger Seat) to generate Power. It's a good use of my Engineer when I'm flying a Drone, either from my Base, or even when attached to said Drone.

    • @iosef3337

Put all batteries in recharge only, put a small battery in discharge only, wait a couple seconds, put all on auto or discharge and you can power all the thrusters but for a very litle time, if you wait more you get linearly more time until the small battery dies

Hitting "P" to connect can be dangerous if you've got multiple connection type blocks (landing gear, other connectors, etc).
I always use "G" when in a ship/rover, then set 'switch connection' or 'switch lock' whatever it says, for a specific connector. It'll even say on the hot bar, "ready to connect" if its ready (plus it turns from white to yellow and lines you up). Sometimes when your connector is ready to connect, your landing gear are also turning yellow and are ready to lock..so hitting P will do that to all those blocks simultaneously. This is annoying if you want to disconnect a connector but go to fly away and cant move...this is because your landing gear are now locked. You hit P to unlock landing gear the connector re-connects... (i set a 'switch lock' for landing gear groups also).
*also, a tip for newbies especially when flying in atmosphere...you can basically 'cruise' planets and moons with very little effort and conserve fuel BIG TIME by grouping all thrusters EXCEPT thrusters marked 'Backward'. Group 'Backwards' thrusters seperately (i use "Cruise thrusters"). So my number 1 in hot bar will be "Main thrusters", number 2 is "Cruise thrusters". As you're flying, keep your crosshairs below the horizon and turn OFF cruise thrusters (backwards). Your ship will gain speed and cruise without any thrusters trying to slow it down, plus no need to keep pressing 'W' to move forward. The UP and Left/Right thrusters will keep you level. Since the planets are spherical, you will continue to approach/surpass the horizon, so just keep dipping your crosshairs as you get to the horizon level. Be sure/mindful of your altitude though...going too fast and approaching a hill or cliff without the thrust power to gain altitude quick enough, you're gonna have a bad time...especially as Andrew mentions, if your ship is full of cargo/ore. ( ^_^)

With welders, rather than slap on a bulky cockpit, I prefer to run a couple of them as drones (and another couple as grinders). You can easily squeeze them through a large block opening as long as you stay within a 5x5 profile. Bonus points if you add a patrol AI to automatically dock it to restock. The advantage is you can park yourself inside your hab and work in relative safety from a console and generally ignore any personal needs. The only downside is the inability to quickly check for missing components and having the dream-sequence filter from using a camera.

Every 6 small thrusters you use is inefficient and a waste of power and thrust. 6:1 ratio, small to large. You’ll still need batteries and a couple small reactors (assuming you have refined uranium, and that can only be found on asteroids now) will save you headaches of running out of power. Lastly, keep in mind the thrust end of a thruster can damage blocks (unless disabled) like 4 out from a small and 6 from a large.

Note: You'll need to maneuver your projected blueprint so that one of the blocks on the ship is touching one of the blocks on the projector's grid. In other words, you cannot weld blocks that would not be touching anything.
