The Air Force Special Warfare Initial Fitness Test Explained (Ft. Stew Smith)

- The Air Force Special Warfare Initial Fitness Test (IFT) is one of the first hurdles an AFSPECWAR candidate must face on their journey to selection. In this video, you will learn how to not only conduct the IFT, but to train for and ultimately crush it… all while getting some invaluable insight by former Navy SEAL Stew Smith.
The Air Force communities that use the IFT are: Special Recon, Combat Controllers (CCT), Pararescuemen (PJ), Tactical Air Control Party (TACP), SERE Specialists, Air Force EOD, Special Tactics Officers (ST), Combat Rescue Officers (CRO), and Tactical Air Control Party Officers (TACPO).
If you’re interested in joining some sort of Air Force Special Warfare community, you will have to pass the IFT.

Who here is planning on, or already taken, the Air Force IFT?
Planning on soon. PJ

Word of advice for guys looking to pursue AFSW, whether it be the STGA route or TACP. Since the IFT is the first "test" into the pipeline, as a general rule, you want to be able to pass this test on your worst day at any given time. That means even if you are sick, sleep deprived, hungry, freezing, etc... You should always be able to pass an IFT. A popular saying in the community is "exceeding the standard is the standard." Never shoot for the minimum, and wishing any of you who decide to pursue this career the best of luck.
What if you hardly get sick? Lol maybe do it on sleep deprivation I work ems too so I'm always sleep deprived
@vendetta7012 completely different kind of sleep dep

Probably the best advice I've heard in a long time
This changed my perspective thanks
Bro, funny enough the most stringent test I had to take. Moving from the Navy to the Air Force, the recruiting cadre were super anal about how everything was done. After busting out all my pull ups, I was told “no rep” for all of them because they wanted me to pull myself up over the bar and look down at the ground at a 45 degree angle. If you’re looking to do anything in AFSOC, get your form down.
And I bet they didn’t even correct you while doing them lmao they waited until you were done
Legit doing my IFT now for the 3rd time. Form is everything!
How many pull ups do you have to do?
@@justsaiyan8678 8 clean
@@TheSilentMajorityNation thx boss!
Stew smith is a legend when it comes to workout techniques and form when it comes to the CSS
You can limp through the calisthenics. That run followed by the underwater swims is where the test starts
EOD does test sit-ups and pushups so be aware.
Thanks, brother.
This helps a lot. I went from a 10:49 500m to a 8:27 swim. Trying out for AFSW as a CCT.
Stew smith workouts are legit. Did his pre ift push up warning order and increased my max by 20 push ups
Yeah he's the real deal!
The underwater was terrifying but I just spent a stupid amount of time in the pool and then it became light af
Nice! What are you going for?

A lot of this is stuff so many guys who have to do a sport in high school (whether they make a team or not) could really benefit from seeing. I was always a pretty good runner in terms of form (as I was told on occasion), but a little short in the limbs so that was a handicap, but I never really thought about technique. This is the kind of thing that could make a mediocre athlete a lot better and Stew is a great counselor.
Yeah like 8 pulls, 80 push ups(Wall push ups at least) and the swimming stuff is something I can just do the rest I just can't but still interesting to see what the basic stuff an SF oper needs to be able to do.
While never had serving in the U.S. Military, I am a serious obstacle course racing athlete and Stew Smith assisted me in improving my performance. He is an excellent coach/trainer and among the best I've worked with! You won't be disappointed.!
Stew Smith has the best advice for anyone wanting to pass the IFT when they are doing Air Force Special Warfare.
Thank you for showing AF some love
It’s sobering once you practice it at a gym to see if you can, and you can only hit the BARE MINIMUM on two of them.
Lot of work ahead of me.
What are the requirements for run, pull ups and swim?
@justsaiyan8678 did you find out? On the website it just says you must do everything in under 2 min but UT doesn't say how many
Absolutely incredible information and very motivational. I appreciate the real talk. 🙏🏻
The PJ puts his 1-2-3's in just like every other joe... the only diffrence is, once those 1-2-3's are installed- he helps.. um... .. dudes live. Thats good enough for this Army Pathfinder.

Should do the Operator Fitness Test (OFT), it is what they have to do to maintain. It is way different from the IFT.
Passed my last two ift's, I'm hitting the minimal standards on the pull ups so I have a month and a half before I ship out to get 12-16
You make selection?
This is like absolute best video you've made to date !
Can you please do a video on the White House Military Office? I'd love to learn more about this organization and how to get in, as well as different jobs they have.
Thanks General Discharge

The standards for 500m and 1500m swims are much slower than i expected.
I thought it would be like sub 9:20 and sub 22:00.
Man.. 30-minute rest to hydrate and shower? In 1984 we went straight from the run to the pool in mid-December and hopped right in. I cramped up halfway through and they yanked me. I could have used that 30 minute break.
On paper, it is a 30-minute rest, in reality, there is no 30-minute rest period... It's straight into the pool for the underwaters and 500-meter swim after the run... the developers usually want to get through the IFT as quickly as possible
Just took mine, they took us from the run to the lockers to change and into the pool. It was about 30 min but definitely not enough time to shower or any of that.
Can you do a focus on Air Force pilots like you did for naval aviators?
28 pull ups
117 sit ups
143 push ups (79 in 1 min)
7:51 in 1.5 mile (I could of went faster, but I paced myself wrong)
25m swims are easy if you have swam most your life and practice form and practice holding your breath in the deepest end of a pool to help push your lungs to cooperate.
My running I trained by working up to over 20 miles at a time. Day off of running and swim. Sprint work to help running and a shorter run of around 5 miles after sprinting. Pool day next day and then next day 20+ miles and running the last mile backwards as it really feels crazy and helps your legs condition then sprint work again and 1 day off to recover
I did Cals every other day to start and added climbing trees with arms only up and down and later went to a peg board and did bear crawls, planks, side planks, hanging as long as I could on pull up bar, dips slow and controlled, walking on my hands, lunges, flutter kicks (ankle weights)
I added weight some days to my push ups.
Those numbers above were my test results. Leave your ego at home. Know you're training so that others may live.
That's definitely the best numbers I heard. Dude in my test did a 7:50 run too. I'm guessing you're doing PJ?
There’s no way you’re doing all that running and weight training and not breaking down your body or ending up sick? What do you eat? Like 6000 calories a day?
Bro didn’t do it right or is capping 💀
Another great video. Can you please make a video about the South African Recces?
Can you do a video on Florida highway patrol and show all of their special units, Just like how you did CHP?
Stew Smith was 5-star
This is what I need. Thanks!
Great video
Very Informative, thank you
Failed the swim 6 times I think , demolished everything else .
Why does the right dude on the thumbnail look like Michael Stevens from Vsauce?
Can yall do a video on the Yamam unit of the Israeli special forces. I am a huge fan and would love to see your take on the Yamam
Hey General Discharge, could you make a video on the United States Marine Corps Counter Intelligence/ Human Intelligence?
It would be good to have information about Air Force cybersecurity and requirements so many videos but nothing about cybersecurity or other cyber pipeline
Love your channel. can you make a detailed video on U.S rangers. i will be one
They already have
For your next video, you should have a former PJ explain how to pass the SEAL initial fitness test.
I was gonna say why have a former seal talk about AfSpecWar IFT. Not saying hes not qualified, he most likely is, but there isnt a former CCT/PJ that can talk about it.
@@johnkamot3237thought it was weird too. 🤷🏽♂️
@@MistaP13 He must have been a CCT/PJ washout then swore he would learn everything about AFSPECWAR IFT to help the future Airmen 😆
Got to talk to stew once, cool guy.
Thx good stuff.
Does anyone else remember that channel kind of like this where the guys voice is less hidden but no one knows who it is but he was previous mil and made these vids and how to prepare?
Late reply, but SOFprepCoach?
It's weird I'm that guy that'll clime a vertical mountain with a single harness and roping like nothing but for some weird reason I can't physically perform pull ups off a bar it's crazy
I’m livid right now, I can pass all those fitness tests fairly easily except I just learned how to swim, it’ll be impossible for me to swim 500M
Please do video on CBP SRT
Crazy how the standards get lower. Knew a lot of people in the pipeline say this years ago. interesting.

Sweet
Kinda embarrassed to say this but I am NOWHERE able to make these scores. Is there any way to get closer to making to these scores maybe go past it?
Workout everyday
Same here bro, what I'm thinking is that I'll sign on through a delayed enlistment and strictly follow the workout schedule/plan my recruiter sent me once I graduate from university
@@soapcang696 That sounds like a pretty good idea
incorporate EMOMs with supersets into your workouts. A quick workout for me would be a 30 minute emom with 3 exercises (5 pull-ups, 10 push-ups, 3 navy seal burpees) with 1-2 mile warmup run and a 1 mile cool down. This way you total about 3 miles of running, 150 pull-ups, 300 push-ups, and 90 burpees. Also, I recommend always working out with a stopwatch to make sure you're not resting too long between sets, and trying to add weight to your pull-ups, sit-ups, dips, and push-ups. (weight vest or dip belt).
Like the video said, give yourself mock IFTs where you do the exercises in a row with the same rest times so you're not surprised on test day.
Do the exercises and add weight when you start progressing, it'll be easier when you don't use extra weight.
Are you guys out in the civ div now?
How does the contract work if you’re prior service?
lol how are pull ups considered hard?
god if I ever do go through with this im so excited for the run being a hs and hobby runner feels kinda like a cheat
edit: just watched it he said a 6 minute pace is good holy fuck they would love me 🤣too bad im dogshit at pushups
20% physical 80% mental
The 5th door. Is Security Forces.
Sere and EOD
I have a question about the running intervals. How many days a week should this be done?
in my training program we do it just once a week
What are mp gear
Do dudes realize this is just the beginning lol the real training happens later
Yea but is it timed like this afterwards? The calisthenics is a joke to me but that run and swim has me worried. I take my asvab next week
@@Eddyag1998did you make it?
This whole voice disguise thing seems a little excessive
Why not just do underwater dolphin kicks for the 25m underwater??
You can add them in although they prefer keyhole stroke as they find you incorporate less strokes, therefore burn less energy.
@@colinrucci3598 interesting. thx
It's not allowed. You can do 2 dolphin kicks at most then the cadre will instruct you to stroke.
Does Height matter cause im 5'7 and think that just cause of my height i can't make it, or there's a list that has a height requirement?
Most special ops aren’t tall you got it homie, former marine btw. If you’re tall enough to join(which you are) you can do special ops
not at all, most of the cadre are about 5'7/5'8
gotta be tall enough to grab the pull up bar, sorry
How can I join us army special forces as a foreigner
You can’t.
Does usaf Cct do ocean swims like seals in the beach ?
Yes. They go through the combat dive course
Yes they do unless it’s changed they had to complete the Army combat diver course. As far as I know all spec ops are proficient in air, land and sea ops.
Yeah, they do it in Pre-dive, in a large lake in Texas. Then in Combat Dive they hit the ocean
I'll graduate from university this June 20th, and I'm certain that my trash GPA has barred me from the officer route (only a 2.77), so should I sign on with a Delayed Enlistment, and take 2 or even 4 months to physically and mentally prepare myself for the IFT?
Don't join .mil is gay
Someone replied me and I can't see a darn thing, gracias YT, many thanks :(
