  • I wanted it to be the best, but it turned out, as always. I went for a walk and looked for sarcosoma mushrooms, but I collected a bunch of giant brains.
I do not know what these mushrooms are called in English. And Google translator doesn't know either. In Latin, brown "brains" are Gyromitra gigas. They are not poisonous. And Gyromitra esculenta are poisonous, but they are of a different color and do not grow in our forest.
    Interesting facts about spring mushrooms:
    - The giant brains is so named not because of its size, but because of the size of its spores. They are the largest among this group of mushrooms.
    - We, like in Australia, have marsupials. Only these are mushrooms. They have spores in their purses. Brains, morels, sarcoscyphs, sarcosomes - marsupials. And mushrooms have bags.
    - The toxin contained in the brains mushrooms is called gyromitrin. In ordinary "brains", its amount depends on the ambient temperature, in the cold it almost does not stand out, in warm weather its amount in mushrooms can be fatal to humans.
    - There is no giant gyromitrin in the "brains" at all, according to laboratory studies by mycologist Vishnevsky.
    - Morels are cone-shaped caps on legs, if you cut the mushroom lengthwise, you will get halves, empty inside. The "brains" are shapeless brain-shaped lumps having the same formless brain-like interior. Do not confuse!
    I didn't find sarcosoma mushrooms.
The black unknown thing that I broke off from the birch is also a mushroom. It's called "chaga" (lat. Inonotus obliquus). This is a useful medicinal mushroom, it is brewed and drunk like tea.
