It's been 7 years since you left Tianjin, there're many thing have been changed. Apparently now Chengdu is the hot spot, the so called new Tier 1 city. From my own experience that Tianjin is entering another rising period of time since 2020, visit the city in 4 years, you won't be disappointed. Just FYI, Chengdu and Sichuan in general still got huge government subsidies annually since 2008 while Tianjin's tax contribution to the country ranks top 5, that's huge burden for Tianjin to be eco-friendly while maintain social stability, being next to Beijing is both a blessing and a curse.
Tianjin, Hebei, and Beijing are probably one of the most conservative places in China. The cultures of the three places are also different. Tianjin is an old industrial city. Chengdu is an emerging big city. You can see some new cultures in Chengdu. In Tianjin, you can experience the atmosphere of an old coastal industrial city that combines Chinese and Western styles. The two are quite different. Choose according to your own hobbies. After recent years of reforms, Tianjin’s pollution is much better than in the past. I hope you can come here again if you have a chance.
4200 rmb per month? wow....when was this? I am currently working at a International School in Beijing (my fourth year) and our salaries are from 30 000 - 40 000 rmb per month. It must have been a very different time when you were there?? 3 Years ago, I also worked for Foreign Studies University, but the Beijing campus called BFSU...they paid about 19500 that was also underpaid because the company the were outsourcing their teachers to the University was doing it illegally...called SDEG Sea Dragon Education Group. Only later found out they took a big part of my salary as commission for themselves. Now I am directly employed at an American International School. Much better. Great video, thank you!!
Hey, I worked in TJ for a year and then went over a few months per time after that twice. This was 2010-2012. I started in Shanghai on an internship which paid 4,000RMB but needed help in the tune of 1,000RMB from my family back home just to survive. No going out, travelling etc. Just going to work and basic food. When I went to Tianjin, after I was poached after doing a white monkey job for an architect I was paid 5,000RMB but things were a bit cheaper in TJ. I then got a 100% bonus when I left and was offered a partnership in the company. I may go back one day... I miss Jianbing.
Sadly, most of your cons are true to me as well, although Tianjin is my home town. Living in Seattle now, I can hardly think of anything that I really miss about Tianjin except for the Jianbingguozi. I have noticed that the overall rating/ranking of Tianjin has been downhill for 20 years. It used to be one of the top three or four cities of china for long time. Now, it even can't make to top 10.
Its been 4 years since ive been their and I have to be honest, I miss the place. I lived their for 9 years and it was amazing. Would 100 percent recommend the place tho
Local Tianjin people are very laid back and enjoy their own lifestyles. Spending an afternoon in a teahouse playing mahjong or watching 相声. Strolling around the park or along the river 海河. Or simply getting together with some friends and chitchatting for hours. Tianjin folks especially the older generations are not busy bustling people, they are not boring, they just enjoy their simple way of life. Re. the judgements, Tianjin people are very straightforward and can be seen as rude, maybe they are just speaking out loud the unspoken. Not saying it is good or bad, but it is what it is. :)
Thanks for giving a shout out to Fabiano and John. I hope ur talking about Irish John and Brazilian Fabiano. Both my close buddies too, living at the University ! You were our neighbour Austin and we lived in the building next to yours. Tianjin was sure a great place ! Feeling Nostaligic !
Yep, those are exactly the guys I'm talking about! There were mixed feelings putting this video together....simultaneous nostalgia and regret hahaha I'm not sure where you're at now, but hopefully, things are going well! 😃
I agree having one for a neighbour.over here in Ireland first I thought great, but as time went on, my wife had to enlighten me to the fact, herself and the husband refer to me as the neighbour, never our friend, they always look down on my children, even though they are grade a students. They borrow borrow and borrow again everything I have to maintain my house, they use me for lifts here there and everywhere. I eventually found her to be fake as well as her husband. No return on anything , my car getting serviced can I get a lift to collect it, suddenly unavailable, BBQs not invited, why would I be, as my wife reminded me, you are only the neighbour not their friend😢
Hay I remember going to that track and there was a foreign food market down below on the track. On one trip to Tianjin we bought a few beers at the market downstairs and drank it outside while watching people run around the track. It was a lot of fun.
Regarding the Cons..... Each Region is depending on the local government officials in charge, could be some OLD people, who don't know how to improve their state or needs someone with injection of NEW ideas, as you say, its close to Beijing, so it could be suffering from Big Brother syndrome, its probably finding it hard to forge an identity being so close to the Capital........ should promote some type of competitions to find new ways or maybe to start some kind of festival, promoting certain aspects of the area... as they say, only the strong survives.
nice video, Austin... I cant believe you only made 4200 per month at a prestigious foreign language university...When I lived in Tianjin, I made 4k a month at a low level, insignificant technology university. btw, I love the way you pronounce "Tianjin" correctly...THANK YOU!!!
I've visited Tianjin in 2002 with my chinese partner and she was saying people was quite rude and not very friendly... In that time was on construction in a massive scale and seems everything has to be done. The pollution was terrible, like a solid poison that can affect you if you keep breathing several days... Otherwise, nowadays looks a beautiful and modern city, and I would like to visit It again
Now the air is better than before. But still jianbingguozi laodoufu zhagao guobacai. As a local Tianjin man,i think Tianjin style is live without pressure.
Haha good video man. I never lived in Tianjin but visited a few times. I never experienced the wages, always been watched or superficiality of the people (I guess because I never stayed there long) but I agree with your other pros and cons. Tianjin is one of the nicest cities I have ever seen. However, every time I went there, I felt bored for most of the time. I remember at times I would just be walking around Joy City, the neighbouring areas or the Italian town and not knowing what to do. Local food was subpar compared to the rest of China. However, it was the first time I ever ate German food! Good thing is that the city is developed and clean. It's got all the amenities you need so I probably wouldn't mind living there. In terms of things to do as a visitor, there isn't too much to experience imo. I could be wrong though.
jyan bing growdz was my living and being in the morning, every morning. and I said add more hot sauce to it, ching ni dwo fang etc., etc, Man your experience is mirrirored is so spot on. When I was there in 1998 your analisiys is spot on. I mean so many of many of my studtents "wantded something"

Enjoyed the video, I've never been outside of Guangzhou, would like to go to Tianjin, old industrial city with history. It is where the Lugou Bridge incident took place and China be the China today.
Known for its Goubuli bun, it's also one of the top 5 cities in China and the gateway to Beijing in the old days. That explained why there were so many foreign concessions. Hopefully they can do something about pollution without hurting the economy too much. On the other hand, they have to boost the economy in order to pay teachers better. Just have to wait and see. The good news is it no longer makes the list of 50 most polluted cities in the world. But China as a whole still has a long way to go.
Interesting video. My friend who lived there didn't have anything great to say about it. Also, side note, I'm new to Beijing and just tried jian bing for the first time. Sooo good. I only have had it twice. The second time (yesterday, actually) they put mayo on it which really ruined it for me. I could tell it would be great without it tho. The first one I had was amazing!!
Oh, nice! Yeah, I agree that mayo on it is disgusting. They do that in Beijing....and it's gross hahaha if you're ever in Tianjin, go to 杨姐煎饼果子 and try it! That was my favorite Tianjin-style one.
Thank you for speaking the truth, the salary in China is super low overall but most people just rather live in a bubble than break it into the real life. I have made a video about salary that Chinese people can make, some of my friends said: You don't make a lot doesn't mean others cannot, I feel bad about this ideology.
Student from Tianjin Foreign Studies University here, that’s actually some quite genuine and accurate description, man ~ Keep up the great job and have a good one out there :v

Really? You’re getting just that kind of salary in tianjin? I’ve been living in tianjin for almost 9 years and worked as an English teacher. Pollution: Beijing is better only because the central government is there so they move the plants away or shut them. They don't care how much it would cost since the health of the head of China is the most important thing. And nobody dare say no if the plants were moved into their place. But can Tianjin government move the plants in Tianjin to hebei? Being watched ,low salary and no entertainment :this is one same issue. What tianjin government keeps doing to the people since 1980s is ignoring people's living standard. How can people have costly entertainment when they are poor? And if you publicly show your dissatisfaction, you'll be silenced. The food: Tianjin doesn't have good food. So as most part of Northern China. Best food is in jiangnan. People in jiangnan is living the life while northern people just make their living
Tianjin has been closing factories for environment like crazy these years. It actually sacrifices its economy a lot and dropped out of top 10 GDP growth in 2020 because of that. Maybe because you’re a foreign expat, and can’t feel. But Tianjin’s healthcare benefits and education are like in top 5, and super family friendly... None of these solid benefits is superficial. and this has been the first time I’ve heard someone says Tianjin is more red?! Gee. Update your data before you complain about Tianjin after 7 years.
8:37 no it was not true. You may have come across some people who likes to trash people from other places of China, no matter which city or village you mentioned. And I am not even sure if it was chengdu, just some narrow minded people.
This video is completely fake... I've been in Tianjin for 2 years and everything said in this video is completely fake. -For foreigners, the salary is actually much higher than most places in China regardless of the job you do. Locals are very underpaid, that's true though. -The architecture is not special at all compared to nearly every other city in China -Tianjin and Beijing have no air pollution. Maybe 10 years ago, but since I've been here, there is none. All the pollution online is photoshopped and fake. -The food in Tianjin doesn't compete with Sichuan for example, or Beijing's international food quality. But the food in Tianjin is not even close to bad.
I think you should refrain badmouthing Tianjin for there's many Tianjin citizens who feel uneasy and get annoyed by your unfriendly comment. Many foreigners in Tianjin have a different perspective and had a different experience than you did. As a foreigner you should pay respect to the local people's livings.
I was always interested in Tianjin ! Glad I could see this vid first as a channel member ! Great footage +Awesome vid !

-The architecture is not special at all compared to nearly every other city in China
-Tianjin and Beijing have no air pollution.
Everyone is allowed their own opinion. If you don’t like something we are free to say so, stop being so sensitive.
When you first came to China, you look a lot heavier. 🙄 With all that food around. 🙄
Wow! You've lost a lot of weight😲
Ah, I see you've been gone for a long time - welcome back! :) The weight loss has been nice, yes!
