A great video would be recreating the "Battle of Palmdale", where a Hellcat drone plane lost control and started fly towards populated areas where the USAF scrambled two F89s (similar to the F104) to shoot it down. They didn't have any guns and tried to use the LAU61 rockets with no gunsights and ended up missing with over 200 rockets, damaging lots of civilian structures on the ground.
If the battle of Palmdale would have been one year later the F-89s might have used AIR-2 Genies. Despite the Genie's nuclear warhead they might have caused less destruction on the ground. @ Grim Reapers: maybe you could reenact "Operation Plumbbob" with the Mig-21's big bombs? And robotic cows as volunteers?
Awesome, I'm looking forward to seeing this show up in more GR activities. It's ironic to think how far ahead of its time it was in the 50s and 60s, and by the time the tech & avionics caught up with it, some 40 years later, new airframe and engine design had zipped right past it. It really is a manned missile. From what I've read, flying it was just possible through negotiation. Fascinating aircraft and a sexy-b. I hope to see an F-101 mod at some time. Another fascinating, if problematic, aircraft.
The F-104 is flown with the least amount of back stick possible. Basically trim and roll all the time and speed is key as you found out the hard way :)
I read that the F-104 also needed some rudder trim at high speeds since the hook was slightly off the centerline. Similar effect as extending fuel probes in some aircraft.
Wow, you gotta love that rampant horse in your vertical stabilizer. This tells me that they are from 4th storm (quarto stormo) based in Grosseto, Italy. I live pretty close, and at the main gate Nerone ( an F-104 with special painting) is kept standing for everyone to enjoy. Greetings from Tuscany Grim
Watching a really talented pilot run this beautiful (and fast) plane really fast at low altitude was a real thrill (and those were the days they went right over the crowd).
Early models of the F-104 used to have the pilot eject down, out of the bottom: It was to make sure the pilot wasn't skewered on that tall tail. The later versions were changed back to the normal "up" direction when they all recieved the standard ejection system. (IIRC the later versions got the standard Martin-Baker system.)
The standard was the Lockheed C1 seat (down). Our german F104G used to have the original Lockheed C2 (up) ejection seat. We lost many pilots, because the chance to survive a ejection on the ground and low altitude was almost 0. For the Zell take off tests, the Starfighter was outfittet with the Martin Baker seat, later, all F104 were upgraded to this system. With handles near the head and between the legs. Germany wanted a low altitude bomber, i thing thats the reason to replace the down ejection system, but the C2 seat wasnt the right system as well. Interesting fact, even after the change to the C2 seat, the old ejection opening was still there and was a good opening for maintenance.
As an Italian I'm happy to see an Italian airforce plane on this channel (even if it's the "fabbrica di vedove" 😂). Anyway I live in Ghedi, the town where there is the airbase of the 6° stormo of the Italian Airforce. They had the F-104 in service, and now there is one in display at the entrance of the base
This remember me when i was young. my father and i used to go on a hill on Como lake, (Italy) where i still live, and watch these pairs of 104 lower than me passing fast just few feets on the water of the lake. They used to do training there because the water was a safe place in case of problems.

And they're so thin that the leading edges are literally so sharp that that can cut you; they actually had protective covers put over them while they were on the ground to keep people from getting injured.
My favorite legendary plane way back in FSX iirc. I mean a rocket with stubby wings that the operating handbook's bold letter recovery from a spin at ANY altitude was to BAIL OUT!!! The jet had many situations where if you entered them you bailed out! A true by the numbers jet that was terribly unforgiving but so rewarding to master. Oh... THAT HOWL!!!!!
The F-104 was relative spin resistant, but the violent pitch-up when exceeding max AOA could result in a twisted airframe. When pitching down after a stall the aircraft could swing sideways into the airflow. The tail could cause a quick change of the roll direction which resulted in twisted airframes.
Are the blown flaps modeled or working? That's what makes it behaveat low speeds. If you heard the real 104takeoff it would do the "moose call" as the engine came up to 100% and the bleed system kicked in. If that is Italian or German and the ejection seat exits upwards what you are flying is actually a Tim Hortons special aka a Canadair CF-104G that was built in Canada and sold to quite a few places new and used. Lots of other modifications that tamed the wee beasty. It was also nuke delivery rated and was essentially a one way ticket. If this is your fav look at some of the paint jobs used by Canada for things like Tiger meets in Germany.
Have the creators modeled BLC? If you lost the BLC on approach ( eg: mech failure or if the engine RPM was reduced below 75% / 78%, etc) you had little hope of recovering the aircraft from the resulting stall. I would like to be corrected but I am not aware that the Silver Sliver in any mark was rated for GBU's, can anyone shed some light on this for me? What the Canadians did with this beast is the stuff of legend. The CF-104 was an upgraded F-104A, used primarily for nuke delivery, ground attack, and reconnaissance. The CF-104's had a gunsight with various settings or modes and no HUD data as we are accustomed to with today's modern aircraft. Superb video as always, wonderful to see the 104 in DCS at last, many thanks for posting.
There’s a ton of documentaries on yt on why it was called the widow maker in Germany specifically. It pretty much came down in nato rushing the armament of nato members, and Germany not having had a luftwaffe since ww2 when they got it, not to mention the f-104 being has high performing for that era as it was. The combination meant Germany bit off more than it could chew with this aircraft.
Wasn't there some kind of experimental F-104 with a rocket engine added on to it? I think it was called the NF-104 and could reach altitudes well above 100,000 feet.
F-104S and Gs had no advanced HUDs if im recalling this correctly. They shared the advanced gunsights found on F-4Es and F-5s, which weren't bad. They could indicate roll angle, CCIP, and the likes. But nothing like any advanced HUD in the teen-series jets.
Re: the gear. Just listened to an audio book and they said pilots would select gear up before rotating to prevent over speeding it. Didn’t work so well when they later transitioned to Tornados. (Book was Tornado Boys).
last year i was able to talk to a former pilot and my son was allowed to climb into the cockpit, unfortunately i wasn't :(. it was very interesting, he also told about some incidents.
Such an amazing plane. Fun fact the US versions had a similar aircraft loss rate to the F-14. Another Fun fact, two Starfighters beat 2 F-15A's in DACT when the F-15 squadron requested a first ever DACT between the two fighters.
The radar missile on the Italian F104 was the Aspide. It was very similar to the AIM7, but like the UK’s Skyflash, it used a monopulse sealer. Great fun the fly against as they were a nightmare to see at range and you would normally see them late - (very pointy and small). I’ve done a couple of runs against them and they would just shoot and scoot. They would never turn as even a heavy F3 could out turn them.
there is a language wall for me, and now I have problems with everything, it is my first time trying to play DCS and I do it only for the F104 (I love it) but after downloading the game and the mod I have many problems, first, I do not get it the mods folder in the DCS folder within saved games, when checking in the game folder the mods folder appears (I'm on steam) when I leave the plane folder and try to open the game it tells me Authorization is valid for 2d 23h 59m The following DLCs are not authorized and will be disabled: VSN_F104G and it does not appear in the game
I wonder how much of an advantage two engines are in terms of costs / safety. How often did only one engine fail and the 2nd engine saved the aircraft? 2 engines = more costs when building new aircraft and during maintenance. Maybe it is more cost efficient to lose some aircraft due to engine failure compared to full life cycle costs? Then again, over open water two engines probably give pilots much more comfort. But during take-off many twin engine aircraft would struggle if one engine would fail. On another note: a German F-4 pilot once intercepted an AWACS during an exercise over the North Sea. After the successful intercept he turned away, low altitude, high speed. His GIB alerted him that a warning light was on. Pilot checked but noticed nothing unusual. GIB repeated the warning light was still on. Pilot looked further down and saw one generator was off. That was because the outward engine went off during the high speed turn. Pilot hit the relight button, engine started, flight continued without any issues. The pilot stated he was amazed that there was not much of a difference when flying with one engine only (Arnulf Hartl, Aircrew interview on F-104 and F-4). Anyway, F-104 and F-4 are amazing aircraft, and the GE-79 was / is an amazing engine (especially considering when it was developed).
I haven't tried the mod yet, but the air-to-air variant of the F-104S should not have an internal cannon. It was removed as a trade-off for gaining the ability to use Sparrows. So dogfighting would be out of the question.
I’m a huge fan of the entire century series aircraft. The F-104 being my all-time favorite. I want to see you guys land it. It high stall speed supposedly made it a real bitch to land.
@@fedesalva5074 nope since the germans used the plane wrong. They wanted to use it as a multipurpose airplane tho it was designed for an interceptor role where it actually shines: held records in climb rate, ceiling and speed. Using the plane outside its strengths and towards its weaknesses lead to the accidents.
I'd love to see it. But remember 15°AoA should not be exceeded and flaps stage "1" make it better at turning, but don't go faster than Mach 0.85 or The flaps get stuck...
At Last! CAP... "we" did it. We got someone, somewhere, somehow, to give us this beauty. Will prove to be the most challenging jet to fly. It is my fav jet as father flew the CF-104(G) version. I'll provide some pointers as you post more 104 vids. Takeoff flaps, also called Maneuvering flaps are good to 550KIAS/M1.8. M1.8 you say in severe disbelief? CORRECT! Use takeoff flaps during cruise when you get down to 350 kts. Corner speed in a clean 104 is 400-420kts - with maneuver flaps. Turns as well or better than an F-4 and retains a heck of a lot more energy. Sustain 7G at the corner speed. Enter the merge at 600-700 kts and make it a vertical fight. As your 104 vids are released I will post 104 articles that will simply blow your mind. Even Pickles will have to leave the room as you read them. When in doubt... ADD POWER.
Germany had 916 F-104, 30% crashed and 116 pilots died. In 1965/66 over a period of 18 month 44 F-104 crashed. Other names for it were "Erdnagel" (that is a peg, for tying down a tent) and "Sargfighter" (Sarg is German for coffin). .
Noone ever bought WinRAR, except for Clint Basinger of LGR a few months ago. That was a real reason to celebrate at Rarlab. But they just could afford one single cheap bottle of champagne for that event...
I invite anyone interested in the F-104G to check out tracks by "Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters". Satirical concept album by a Brit, Robert Calvert, evidently a bit salty that Germany didn't purchase Lightnings in the late '60s, early '70's, or something (if only they had!). If you're familiar with Germany's *amazing* safety-record with the F-104, you'll get all the jokes! So many good models of the F-104, I dunno which one I should build first! The Lindberg 1/48th F-104 (1965) has retractable gear, a working ejection-seat, hinged canopy, and a removable tail with a J-79 inside!
So the discord group are the gate keepers of the mod? What criteria dictate if a person is deemed worthy to receive the mod? Is that common practice for DCS mods?
By far my favs are 104’s and lightnings also , 1000% agree with yah on that!! Is there Any decent lightning’s to download?? Fairly new to dcs and haven’t seen any lightning’s but not sure really we’re to look, (I’m new and not technically inclined, took me days to figure out how to even download the game 🤦♂️)
I wish our F104s coul carry such a good load of weapons.... if I remember well the Aeronautica Militare f 104s could only carry maximum 4 missiles or 2 bombs. I apologize if I am wrong.
So.... Uh... How come you didn't try this one for the sr71 intercept, just for shits and giggles? I get that it doesn't quite claim some of the numbers of other planes but it was one of the few that really could cruise at mach 2 and not merely dash, struggle there and quit.

The italian F104 never mounted missiles under the fuselage but, anyway, the plane is so beautiful. Neither they had any Hud
Cap, the Starfighter is one of my favourites too! You can create PAF Starfighter missions with this!
rgr
Also my second favourite aircraft ever, second only to the Draken.
It high stall speed supposedly made it a real bitch to land.
agree
Impressive Simba!!!
I am not a pilot. I don't own DCS and have never played it. Why the hell do I watch every single one of these videos? Anyone?
Because you are an excellent example to the other Valued Viewers?
Lmao that makes two of us.
Same
Same here :-)
wikipedia: "The Germans lost 292 of 916 aircraft and 116 pilots from 1961 to 1989"
WOW
I would like to know italian numbers too... Maybe it was even worst to them...
One of the most beautiful jets ever!
agree
Love watching him crash, and I also talk to myself while playing
All the best people do.
I can't wait to fly this thing :)
We need to do 104 vs mig-21 or A-4 dogfight when we get a chance. Maybe next week.
@@grimreapers Haha, you know I'm game :)
I'd love to see it. But remember 15°AoA should not be exceeded and flaps stage "1" make it better at turning, but don't go faster than Mach 0.85 or The flaps get stuck...
@@paulstich3053 Good to know :)
@@KortanaDCS don't help her. I spent 5 min in the last video trying not to be shot down by her. ;)
Sweet!
Cap, quick question, don't we need to use OVGME anymore? I only have the A4 mod which is in the OVGME folder.
Personally don't use it. I guess it's up to you.
Planes like this, F105 Thunderchiefs, F111s, Buccaneers, Jags, F100 super sabres etc... Are the coolest
That’s why they call it the “Widow Maker”
At Last! ADD POWER.
lol thanks KW
Germany had 916 F-104, 30% crashed and 116 pilots died. In 1965/66 over a period of 18 month 44 F-104 crashed. Other names for it were "Erdnagel" (that is a peg, for tying down a tent) and "Sargfighter" (Sarg is German for coffin). .
There seems to be a lot of decent mods now but finding them is tricky. There doesn't seem to be a mod list anywhere that I can find
I am keeping this list: th-cam.com/play/PL3kOAM2N1YJcbzwU5FCo0DRmCdF3owO1o.html
You must do a remake of The Right Stuff, Chuck Yaeger altitude record attempt.........
rgr
We can now simulate the Mystery Science Theater 3000 movie "The Starfighters" in DCS. This is truly a great day.
cool
*giggles*
Has it been released? I can't find and download link.
my hud remains turned off all the time, how can I turn on? I press electric panel on key stroke but no hud appears
Bless his cotton socks! hahaha
Very nice the new version!! But clicking the Discord link says I've not the invitation.... Where could it be downloaded from? Thanks
Unrelated to the F-104 but how did you change the icons for aircraft in the mission editor?
there is a icon at bottom of ME screen
You thought we wouldn't notice that you haven't bought WinRAR, but we noticed :P
eek
Noone ever bought WinRAR, except for Clint Basinger of LGR a few months ago. That was a real reason to celebrate at Rarlab. But they just could afford one single cheap bottle of champagne for that event...
Love the star fighter soo cool 60s best gen
Now you can really try the touch - roll - touch
Couldn’t agree anymore on your favs,,, is there a lightning mod????
Couldn't get to work. Won't show up on my module manager or plane list
That thing looks like an experimental nasa plane, not sure how fast it actually is but it looks fast standing still.
LoL and he found out why the 104 got window maker from the German Air force.
About 1/3 of them came down by accident
What IS the Key bind for the expérimental f104A ? (The rocket)
She's a touchy bird
Remember, you're flying the only aircraft to take down a b60 Valkyrie
I wish our F104s coul carry such a good load of weapons.... if I remember well the Aeronautica Militare f 104s could only carry maximum 4 missiles or 2 bombs.
I apologize if I am wrong.
Dont forget to set flaps properly for takeoff :-D
Stage "1" is a touch better for take-off, because it is not that easily oversped ;-)
Your flaps weren't down!! I saw that when you took off! NEVER take off without flaps!!
Now you guys can recreate the take off Roll and land stunt 🥳
yup
F104 aka when i go somewhere i zoom climb at mack2 :)
the mighty widow maker
Don’t be afraid to use takeoff/combat flaps up to 550kts IAS.
Will DCS model the accident rate for this plane?
with my flying YES
The F-104 Starfighter, aka "Lawn Dart".
Q: How do you get your hands on an F-104?
A: Buy a field and wait.
eek
The F-104S could only take 2 sparrows and 4 sidewinder and when equipped with the sparrow it could not use the gun.
Depends, ASA-1 Not ASA-2 Yes
As for why the F-104 is so loud, I'm guessing it's due to how short the tailpipe is on the J-79.
So.... Uh... How come you didn't try this one for the sr71 intercept, just for shits and giggles? I get that it doesn't quite claim some of the numbers of other planes but it was one of the few that really could cruise at mach 2 and not merely dash, struggle there and quit.
That's tomorrow's vid :)
It's written Rayak but actually pronounced RiyehEk
I'd like to see an f106 with the genie nuclear AAMs
why hud and radar scope from f-15?
well spotted :)
