Converting a vocal to MIDI has been a "holy grail" for music producers for so long and this is the first plugin I've come across that seems to do a reasonable job of it. Well done Waves! This is a great plugin.
Could you explain how you got it to be accurate? I followed the steps identically with high quality equipment and low noise....even sang the same melody accurately and its giving me a lot of extra notes. How much did you have to adjust the settings? Thanks for your help!
That's really cool to quickly sketch a melody idea. Before that I was using Melodyne to transform my memo vox into midi, now I can just do it on the fly with the mic, directly in the project :)

I have had this idea for ages and been doing it buy exporting midi from Melodyne but this is much more intuitive. I only do this to figure out the scale and the key of my ideas and then write the music with that reference.
I can't get this to work on FL Studio 20? The midi out works and I can control the synth; however, I can't get it to record the "notes being played"? When I record automation nothing happens? Thanks!

@Darryl-Mathew Suasua it doesn't work in FL. There is a sort of workaround. Once the audio is recorded go to edit in Edison and go to tools and dump score to piano roll. However, this method shown does NOT work in FL Studio. I verified with Waves support.
Your best bet might be a nice interface with great drivers. I have an i7 4770k (an older system) and my ability to real-time VST plugs when I bought my BabyFace Pro FS went from 0 to 100 real quick. P.S. - Love your vids. Keep up the good work!

When I press "no input" on the midi channel it doesn't show me the audio track where I have the lead vocal...it just says "all ins, computer keyboard and configure". Help.
Does it also carry all pitch bend information in the vocal to the new midi instrument (of course assuming the midi instrument has that functionality). Say for example you wanna sing a line that you want a violin vst to play, does it transfer those nice pitch bends as well
Thanks for posting this tutorial. I've learned a bunch. I'm working with Digital Performer 10 and use Wave plugins on my vocals, but when I use Ovox. It red lines my real time RAM usage. Do you have a suggestion on how to lower it? I only have 8 gig of ram on my mac mini, but I'm going to max out the ram at 64g. I think that's the problem. Any Idea's on why it over loads my real time usage ram?

I'm a little confused,I downloaded,and paid for ,Ovox,on the 21-03[the prev.version,no midi out]..then this announcement [MIDI out]pops up,telling me of this version,but no info.as to where to find the download..I am running Reason 10[latest version prior to R11]..so there could be routing fun there..it's running on an i7 with 16Gb RAM,and around 3 Tbs storage...But,I still find the DSP meter is running off the scale,even with Ovox as the only item in the rack,this usage continuing even after the device is bypassed,only stopping when the device is turned off..Any thoughts please.Stay safe all

Nice, I once invented what I called the Hummer a small handheld device that you hum into then change your humming into various instruments should have patented this was back in like 1994 :( LOLoh well they made my idea a reality in various software now

@@tigergame what I figured out is you have to use the VST version not the AU for it to show up. It did not download from waves at first. Had to go back and figure that out as well. good luck!

Ahh I see... I was using the AU rather than the VST. Doesn't make sense why the AU doesn't work though and you should tell people this rather than point them to a page of mass text just to get this one detail.

Can you do this in Logic Pro X as well? I can't seem to find the function to make an audio track the input of either a software instrument track or external instrument track? Thanks in advance :)
@Jonny Silva You will have to do the same steps as they do in the video except when you are selecting the input for your synth you'll need to bus the vox to its own bus and select that as your input for the synth/midi instrument- logic doesnt allow other channels to be inputs.

How can you have a record icon, on a midi track that has no input? Your instructions at 1:55 do not make sense. You created a midi file, added an instrument and are triggering it via midi, but the input says "no input"
Waves - it's a bit frustrating when you keep doing tutorials for Ableton but the set up is done differently in other popular DAWS like Logic. Can you please at least include text in the field below the video, with clear step-by-step instructions? You currently link to other articles below the video, but have nothing on this.

You have to download LoopMidi to make it work with FL. That help page is useless. They replied with the same after I already said I used the page. I contacted support and they gave me the solution. If you need it hit me back and I'll paste it here.
Download and install LoopMIDI. Launch LoopMIDI and create a new MIDI port. Launch FL Studio Go to Option > MIDI Settings Under Output assign LoopMIDI Port to Port 0. Do not check Send to master sync. Under Input enable the LoopMIDI port. It’s not necessary to assign a specific output port for it. Insert Ovox on a channel. Enable MIDI Out on Ovox interface. Go to plugins settings and change the MIDI Output port to 0. Insert the instrument you wish to receive the MIDI notes on a new track. Go to the plugin’s settings and change the MIDI Input port to 1. Highlight the VSTi track and record.
Hi Fatih, did you add OVox to the channel? Before adding OVox, you won't be able to see audio channels as inputs on MIDI channels. After you insert OVox on an audio channel it will appear in the list.
@@waves No its not working actually. Ovox working properly by itself. But I cannot see OVOX channel as MIDI Input on any MIDI channel. When I asked this question I was on a High Sierra system and now I moved a Sonoma Mac and nothing has changed. What I'm missing? Maybe I need to enable something from Ableton because in usual you're not seeing Audio channels as MIDI input
Can I run my audio through a different synth than the one in Ovox (I use Logic)? I'm wanting to change up the synth sound (I guess a different synth is an external carrier, right?) that processes my vocal. Help appreciated
Yes. the External Carrier is used to select another synth. Just open it on an audio track, change it to external carrier, synth source to sc, route the synth to the sidechain input of the audio channel and from there just play with the input drive and gain to get going.

Hmmm...ok, I just got this in an effort to replace my TC Helicon Voice Works which is starting to die...I'm a bit frustrated so far. It does do a whole series of effects but its kind of reminding me of 80s effects units; a bunch of extreme sounds, none of which sound natural or full. I'm definitely going to give it more time and will follow up with a more fair review but I'm a bit confused as to why I can't find a preset that doesn't thin out the voice and give it some extreme effect...also a bit surprised that I've yet found a way to adjust blend or mix effectively without using a send or side chaining... So far I'm thinking this is great device for someone who CAN'T sing or effectively use their voice...LOL...once again...I'll give it more of a chance but I have to say that I'm frustrated enough to post this so...
Spent a few more hours with this thing and did some of the tutorials...I've got mixed feelings. As a synth, its impressive. I've been a MIDI and Ableton guy for a while so the real time conversion things are pretty cool and it can do a lot. Two major things that I would like to see: 1) More practical presets. I'm definitely from the "Presets are for the weak..." crowd but at the same time, presets give you a sense of what a device is capable of and its range. Most of the presets this comes with are impractical and only work for altering a vocal beyond recognition of the original. That's fine IF that's what you want, but like any effects IMO there should be examples of how to use it subtlety too. I get that the "kids" like Autotune vox and NOT having to know how to sing but I don't think a product should be rooted in disguising your performance to that level. 2) I have to say, as impressive as the engineering is on this product I'm SERIOUSLY unimpressed with the sound quality. I had to build effects chains in front and behind the unit to get it to sound like it had a full harmonic range. I've yet to try it in a mixing room or with a PA but the Mids and Highs completely overpower the lows with it so far. I would love to see Waves add in a Tube EQ emulator (the EQ in the product did NOT sound good to my ears or produce desired results on the low end.). All in all, an impressive product. I imagine a second version will be pretty mind blowing. I can imagine some amazing things coming from this product...
Audio input where OVOX plugin is on does not appear in Midi channels..Only Midi channels..Is There something I need to do in Ableton to make them appear? I can't seem to suss this one out..
how can i send the midi out but mute the voice so only the effects on a different channel play from the midi generated from tracking vocal recording track

I have only 4 options on my midi input - ( all ins , computer keyboard, configure and no input ) , so how do i select lead vocals on midi channel strip input in ableton live ?
there appears to be so many tutorials featuring this plugin, all seemingly lacking in-depth instructions [specifically] covering live tracking. Just doesn’t make much sense
im on protools and im trying to follow and i have never send to a midi i usually do aux and i cant even find an insert i would assume i would start by sending a midi out from ovox and create a midi note patern then i can choose whatever instrument from their but can anybody on here can help i promise ill be ya best friend .

Apparently OVox doesn't support MIDI CC messages (expression/volume, vibrato, pitch bend, etc.).

That depends on your production. Usually this would go after EQ and Compression, but the other way around can work too.

Can you do this in Logic Pro X as well? I can't seem to find the function to make an audio track the input of either a software instrument track or external instrument track? Thanks in advance :)

I’m pretty sure you can just use the side chain option to select the audio you want as an input?
@Jonny Silva You will have to do the same steps as they do in the video except when you are selecting the input for your synth you'll need to bus the vox to its own bus and select that as your input for the synth/midi instrument- logic doesnt allow other channels to be inputs.

How can you have a record icon, on a midi track that has no input? Your instructions at 1:55 do not make sense. You created a midi file, added an instrument and are triggering it via midi, but the input says "no input"

Waves - it's a bit frustrating when you keep doing tutorials for Ableton but the set up is done differently in other popular DAWS like Logic. Can you please at least include text in the field below the video, with clear step-by-step instructions? You currently link to other articles below the video, but have nothing on this.

You have to download LoopMidi to make it work with FL. That help page is useless. They replied with the same after I already said I used the page. I contacted support and they gave me the solution. If you need it hit me back and I'll paste it here.
Download and install LoopMIDI.
Launch LoopMIDI and create a new MIDI port.
Launch FL Studio
Go to Option > MIDI Settings
Under Output assign LoopMIDI Port to Port 0.
Do not check Send to master sync.
Under Input enable the LoopMIDI port.
It’s not necessary to assign a specific output port for it.
Insert Ovox on a channel.
Enable MIDI Out on Ovox interface.
Go to plugins settings and change the MIDI Output port to 0.
Insert the instrument you wish to receive the MIDI notes on a new track.
Go to the plugin’s settings and change the MIDI Input port to 1.
Highlight the VSTi track and record.
I cant see audio channels as input on midi channelş. Whats wrong with me?
Hi Fatih, did you add OVox to the channel? Before adding OVox, you won't be able to see audio channels as inputs on MIDI channels. After you insert OVox on an audio channel it will appear in the list.
@@waves No its not working actually. Ovox working properly by itself. But I cannot see OVOX channel as MIDI Input on any MIDI channel. When I asked this question I was on a High Sierra system and now I moved a Sonoma Mac and nothing has changed. What I'm missing? Maybe I need to enable something from Ableton because in usual you're not seeing Audio channels as MIDI input
Can I run my audio through a different synth than the one in Ovox (I use Logic)? I'm wanting to change up the synth sound (I guess a different synth is an external carrier, right?) that processes my vocal. Help appreciated
Yes. the External Carrier is used to select another synth. Just open it on an audio track, change it to external carrier, synth source to sc, route the synth to the sidechain input of the audio channel and from there just play with the input drive and gain to get going.

@@andrestuart7994 Thanks man. I tried this out, but I either get an unintelligible sound (sounds it's just the synth playing) or I get it sounding like the synth is just playing alongside the vocal audio. I'm hoping it can sound like my voice is, "singing the synth" like a talkbox if possible

Hmmm...ok, I just got this in an effort to replace my TC Helicon Voice Works which is starting to die...I'm a bit frustrated so far. It does do a whole series of effects but its kind of reminding me of 80s effects units; a bunch of extreme sounds, none of which sound natural or full. I'm definitely going to give it more time and will follow up with a more fair review but I'm a bit confused as to why I can't find a preset that doesn't thin out the voice and give it some extreme effect...also a bit surprised that I've yet found a way to adjust blend or mix effectively without using a send or side chaining...
So far I'm thinking this is great device for someone who CAN'T sing or effectively use their voice...LOL...once again...I'll give it more of a chance but I have to say that I'm frustrated enough to post this so...
Spent a few more hours with this thing and did some of the tutorials...I've got mixed feelings. As a synth, its impressive. I've been a MIDI and Ableton guy for a while so the real time conversion things are pretty cool and it can do a lot. Two major things that I would like to see:
1) More practical presets. I'm definitely from the "Presets are for the weak..." crowd but at the same time, presets give you a sense of what a device is capable of and its range. Most of the presets this comes with are impractical and only work for altering a vocal beyond recognition of the original. That's fine IF that's what you want, but like any effects IMO there should be examples of how to use it subtlety too. I get that the "kids" like Autotune vox and NOT having to know how to sing but I don't think a product should be rooted in disguising your performance to that level.
2) I have to say, as impressive as the engineering is on this product I'm SERIOUSLY unimpressed with the sound quality. I had to build effects chains in front and behind the unit to get it to sound like it had a full harmonic range. I've yet to try it in a mixing room or with a PA but the Mids and Highs completely overpower the lows with it so far. I would love to see Waves add in a Tube EQ emulator (the EQ in the product did NOT sound good to my ears or produce desired results on the low end.).
All in all, an impressive product. I imagine a second version will be pretty mind blowing. I can imagine some amazing things coming from this product...
Audio input where OVOX plugin is on does not appear in Midi channels..Only Midi channels..Is There something I need to do in Ableton to make them appear? I can't seem to suss this one out..

Try loading the VST Version of OVOX onto the Audio Channel, not the AU.

Do the same thing he does in the video but turn the 'Voice' parameter all the way down and you won't hear the original source.

im on protools and im trying to follow and i have never send to a midi i usually do aux and i cant even find an insert i would assume i would start by sending a midi out from ovox and create a midi note patern then i can choose whatever instrument from their but can anybody on here can help i promise ill be ya best friend .
ovox must be selected as vst3 not as audio unit in order to make it work...
