Thank you very much for this! I saw this by accident. Very interesting. Have a granddaughter that was tested for dyslexia at the age of 5.5, they said they think she has APD. Sad to say we did not pursue this further. I am excited to look into this more on her behalf. This may be one of the components missing in her learning differences. Thank you again!.
Dr. L's TedTalk introduced me to APD and I finally understood what my 15 year old was experiencing. I had him tested and sure enough he has APD. It breaks my heart to know how long it took to diagnose properly.
I am in Uganda and I was lucky to recieve Starkey hearing aids in 2019. It was helpful initially but then some other issues came up. While the hearing aids have the ability tò amplify sound, it was amplifying all sounds. And when all sounds were heightened, I was unable to hear the person speaking. I could hear pages turning in class, I could hear even the slightest move of shoes, I could hear the birds chirping out side, I could hear cars passing by the school,........ I was hearing all these at ònce and that created noise. And most frustrating was mý inability to hear or listen to what the teachers said. I couldn't hear them in all the noise. I had to continue increasing the volume so that I could hear the teachers but I could only hear vague sounds and no words. I would silently cry at the back of the class feeling so frustrated. And to make matters worse, when I took òff the hearing aids, I realised my natural hearing was diminishing gradually because I would listen on a high volume in desperation to hear what was said and my lectures run from 7:30 am till 4:30pm. My ear started to hurt, I used to feel alot of head ache and I was seeing myself become deaf. I gave the hearing aids a break for sometime. Initially I couldn't hear any sound. Then sound started coming back. Sometimes my hearing gets so bad, I have to use the aids again. I use them on and off. I still have them till today, though one of them has stopped working completely. I am studying law, I am in my final year and I perform well in my exams and tests. I have not been able to hear my lecturers for 4 years, and I am about to go into the field where my hearing problem will be a huge challenge to me. I hope one day, I can get a hearing aid that çan amplify voices not simply amplifying all sounds at once. I thank Starkey for giving me hope
This video is extremely helpful, had been referred from Nadia Abbott, I have two children who have this issue however they had glue ear when they were younger and had grommets which fell out quite a few years ago. Only yesterday we found that my daughter has excellent hearing but still has muffled hearing…APD is a thing! I beltyou are onto something really big and god knows how many kids are struggling at school…my daughter is 15 now and has deep understanding of how this has impacted her life so far who was diagnosed with glue ear much later than her younger brother…would love to share her experience and so would she! Love to help in any way! This needs to be understood by schools in the UK and we are going to be taking this to school…any resources would be extremely grateful if you could share so that I am able to share with schools.
How I can be part of this study case?. I had my baby and five months later covid hit. I've been saying, my "hearing problem" started after my daughter was born / Covid . I don't dare to say this to my family, they might think I am crazy, but it's like that baby brain stayed. I was diagnosed with APD last week. I'm 40. I live in Melbourne, Australia. And English is my second language.
My mom told me that I didn't talk until I was four years old I think or maybe younger I don't remember. lol! Maybe it's because the people I was around were full of crap. lol! In all seriousness I was diagnosed with APD. The Dr said, "She'll talk when she wants to talk." lol Nice to meet ya doc.I actually wish I could have remembered that moment to shake his hand. I am also very introverted and like to stay in doors most of the time.
This APD could form dyslexia, people with this would not hear the sounds of the letters that form the words. they would than find it difficult to spell the words. Fascinating!

I was blown away to find the first video I find was, ted talks tauranga...just over the hill from me... how do I contact your clinic to enquire about the 12 step program..
I found abt my auditory processing disorder order and visible processing disorder in college! I always struggled in school but told I am super smart but also told by teachers were like “ur not trying hard enough, u don’t want a take notes u just wanta watch the film, u need to stop making so many spelling mistakes, ur a bad test taker , girls aren’t good at math etc…. I cant stand crowds and loud noises, i need to look at people to hear them better, a hearing aid helped emmensly! Wish i had found out at a younger age.
I have tinnitus and only recently learned about APD. I always thought it was the tinnitus that caused my hearing issues.

My son had a few ear infections when he was small that he caught while at daycare and it’s possible that this contributed to his APD

If only there was testing for adults. I'm in Florida and can't find anyone who does it. I'm 45 years old and desperate for testing.

ALso it's such a diservice to when a profesional tells me that I have Borderline Personality Disorder when it's APD
