  • Hello guys and gals, it's me Mutahar again! In the future of my new PC rig it's time to examine some serious options. I've been a Linux user for quite some years and NVIDIA hasn't been the nicest player for me unlike it's competition. AMD is still a fair bit behind and with a month to go for an eventual reveal, I hope AMD doesn't make me regret switching. Thanks for watching!

Many years ago there were something called Omega drivers, which were modded graphics drivers for nVidia and ATI/AMD GPUs that unlocked more performance through various means (registry tweaks, etc). Both nVidia and AMD found out about Omega drivers around the same time.
nVidia sent a cease and desist, and at one point alluded to the threat of legal action.
AMD credited and thanked the creator, and brought him in to be a beta tester for official drivers.

      bingo, same here.
most devs only use dlss and framegen as excuse for sloppy optimization, it's one step forward and two steps back.
and although i have a 4080 super, personally i couldn't care less about ray tracing and never use it, the performance hit is just too big and a game with well placed cube maps and lightsources looks absolutely good enough. for example: just look at 2015 sw battlefront or battlefield 1, or for a newer examples: horizon forbidden west or the ps5 demons souls remake, these games still slap despite having zero ray tracing.

I've been telling people for ages that this is a problem that NVidia needs to solve, not Epic. Now they have solved it to the 95th percentile, likely fully solved with DLSS 4.5 or whatever.

Nvidia sponsors games and helps in development for some big releases because RT is a selling point for their cards.

@ I don't even know at this point. Most of them are out of their minds. Gigabyte and Zotac seem to be the most reasonable, at least with their "lower tier" cards but pretty much everyone is charging a $500+ premium on top of tariff increases, whether it be directly from the manufacturer or retailers like Newegg price gouging. Most cards are $2.6k or more now and sometimes the only stock you can find is with bundles so you're forced to pay another $200-400. I paid a $60 premium over MSRP for the 2nd fastest 1080 ti in 2017.

Two things I think Muta doesn't realize as far as Nvidia's faults:
    1. They severely lack VRAM. The 4060 and 4060ti are infamous on tech channels as bad cards you should never buy because of the lack of VRAM. They can't actually play games on higher resolutions and texture/foliage settings because they run out of VRAM and then you get stutters, lower framerate and in some cased textures failing to load. This is likely on purpose for planned obselescence. Despite only being roughly 10% faster according to sites like TechPowerup and Tom's Hardware, my 6750XT beats the 3060ti 8GB in my brothers' computer on The Forever Winter with about a 40% higher frame rate and no stutters, while on higher settings and 1440p whereas he's playing at 1080p, medium settings.
    2. Raytracing is overhyped, in most games it really doesn't make a big difference visually. Hardware Unboxed compared a ton of different games with RT vs no RT a while ago and in most games you can barely tell the difference. Nvidia pushes RT really hard because they have dedicated hardware for it and can sell their cards as cutting edge. There are also other solutions for simulated lighting that aren't as intensive and still look great, which are going to be more appealing as they let people with much more dated hardware play their games. Unreal Engine, for all its issues, has Lumen which is genuinely a great technology. It looks almost as good as Nvidia's hardware raytracing, but it's handled on a software level and has a significantly lower impact on performance, both on Nvidia cards and AMD cards. Nvidia will keep pushing raytracing even if it's inefficient because it pressures people into buying their cards.

Underrated comment. I have bought GPUs from both sides since the late 90s, and the life-ending limit to all of them wad VRAM,(except for the RX480 8GB). ALWAYS go more VRAM. Cards with more VRAM also sell for much more on the used market for the same reason that they're more viable longer.

Not 3.1...3.0 and it is garbage...a modder did some work on it and was way better; meanwhile DLSS keeps getting support from them EVERY iteration...if you think they are not getting "help" in everyway possible think again. So comparing it to DLSS was BS on your part; CDPR did an entire DLSS update for them. They just tossed amd out and said here...go get a dlss card or "F" off; AMD ain't paying us. Oh lest not forget that Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2 are both NVIDIA sponsored titles.

It doesn't even work properly and the mirror reflections give users an advantage in some cases in the increasingly city maps. Due to absolute basement level laziness money extracting devs, 137m in EU and you are lucky to get a new map per year and no new features/modes or actual changes bar very minor ones. Play the same 5 maps due to premium map bans and no ability to select maps. It's absurdly poor managed this game and does not drive player retention lol.

The reason NVIDIA is so expensive is because its leading in AI. The number of GPUs they are selling for these AI projects like Super Micro is insane. They don't need gamers anymore. You will be paying for the name, not the game. AMD is 100% the way to go. I typed this on a 7950X3D & 6900XT. Love it.

    • @jasonzhu9742
      @jasonzhu9742 8 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +10

I'm not tryna defend Nvidia. But I don't think the GPU prices are high because they are leading in AI. Because the RTX 5070 and 5070 Ti got a lower price than last gen 4070 and 4070 ti while the RTX 5090 got a $400 increase over last generation RTX 4090. So I think the GPU prices are priced based on the demand of the GPU tiers. Because remember when the RTX 30 series was scalped like crazy and there was crazy demand for all of them? I think that's why they increased the price of the RTX 4070 from the previous generation 3070 from $500 to $600 and RTX 3070 ti to RTX 4070 ti went from $600 to $800.
I also want to mention that even if Nvidia doesn't have high GPU prices. The scalpers will buy them all up and resell them for a much higher price anyways. So I don't 100% pin the blame on Nvidia for high GPU prices. The only ones I blame are the people who still buy their GPUs, especially the people who buy from scalpers.

AMD's driver software is atrocious though. The one recent AMD card I owned was factory-set to overheat and shut down, only kicking fans to max when >90% of the way to the temp shutoff. Greenscreened at least once a week, and every time it did I had to remember to go fix the fan settings again. Nearly a year later that got fixed in the driver defaults, but was still looking for a version that didn't crash so often and the newest wasn't it.
I ain't paying $2000 for an Nvidia card either so I guess I'm sitting on my 3060 for many years to come. That's the real solution, refusing to engage with the crappy market.

AMD hardware is no comparison to Nvidia RT cores or dlss. Nvidia has hardware on their cards that allow their software to outperform AMD. I want to see AMD do what they did in the cpu category versus Intel to Nvida in the gpu category but that will take years to happen.

I feel so conflicted about NVIDIA. Love them or hate them, they pioneered so much of what we now take for granted within PC gaming, and even things like DLSS and AI Upscaling were novel at first. But now, they charge super-inflated prices and their GPUs set a bad precedent for game devs who will forgo optimisation in aid of just thinking: "They can upscale and use framegen anyways". Look at the MH Wilds, Doom Dark Ages and Indiana Jones requirements. Yes, we want next-gen games in a gen still getting XBOX ONE ports, but if RGG Studio can put out Pirate Yakuza which looks almost photorealistic and can run well on a 2000 series, it proves we don't need hardware that beefy yet if devs just do their jobs.

Ray tracing can be transformative for games like Cyberpunk, Silent Hill 2, and Control but honestly I see a lot of people not even using it because of how much of a resource hog it is. Stuff like frame gen also runs the risk of introducing input lag.
If you just want high frame rates and play at or around 1440p without Ray tracing, I think AMD is more than up to the task of satisfying that huge chunk of gamers especially if the price is right.

Sparing Monster Hunter Wilds, I’ve gotten a lot of great use out of my new AMD build running at 4K with decent settings-surprising for a new build that cost under $1K USD. I’m pretty sold on AMD in the future as long as they keep making higher-end stuff like the 7800 and 7900 models. Right now my only concern is the rumours that they’re only doing two mid-range cards this gen and that the 7000 series was their last gen for high-end. But, rumours and leaks-I wanna see what they’re actually doing going forward.

God bless you Mr. Mutahar, for allowing me, a dusty old millennial to be able to understand what's even going on in the gaming industry.

I bought an XTX for my wifes build. I have a 3090. I have been EXTREMELY impressed by the XTX. Drivers are crazy stable and the GPU is fast when it matters. Its the 4th fastest RT card as well and is the 4th fastest raster card.

As someone who is currently using an AMD Ryzen PC that's small enough to be a Minecraft Blackstone Button?

If you ignore gimmick retrd sht like frame gen and path tracing and etc, my RX6900XT is still an insane beast. Lots of VRAM and I can push every new triple A to the max on my 21:9 3440x1440 monitor. If we ignore all these new gimmicks that nvidia has been putting out, suddenly cards don't really evolve since some years ago... you older high end card is still very good today.

I started to experiment with Linux gaming in ‘21 and switched to AMD with the 6900XT, and have since upgraded to the 7900XTX. I was disappointed to hear about the lack of a high-end 9000 card from them this generation, but after seeing how the 7900XTX stacks up against the 5080 and 5090, I think I’m okay to sit this cycle out.
Hopefully the RX 1190XTX will be worth the wait, and have a better name than that.

I made the switch last year and won’t be going back. Very happy with products and support.

Whoo flippers! To see price tags for the 5080/5090 sell for the same price as a whole rig should be going for?! Yeah, insane times we're in here.
