I started doing this awhile ago...it is addicting! I was going to slowly build a quilt...sort of a memory quilt for all the projects I've ever done but just had a thought that placemats might be a better way to go. The grandkids would get a kick out of finding scraps of their quilts in each one. Sort of an I Spy deal!

I call that "therapy sewing"!! Sometimes I want to enjoy the zen of working in colour and the soothing act of creation without taxing a tired brain...making crumb blocks and strip sets fits the bill!

I'd love to see a video about using crumbs successfully. I don't like the busyness of most crumb quilts but i love the use of cool colours and unifying sashing in this. I wonder if there are other tricks i didn't notice which helps to tie these together.
That's fantastic! You have inspired me. I'm going to make about 12 squares, keeping to the same colours family and then checkerboard them with white, en pointe. This will be made into a baby quilt.

It is really so easy Roxane. I love it because I don't have to think too much about what I am doing. Just find two straight edges, sew them together and trim.
Also I have lots of scrapes (crumbs), I want to sew them together to fairly large pieces, then cut aprons for my Christmas gifts this year to my children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. All sizes!! The guys as well as the girls, they all love to cook!!

I am new to sewing and love collecting the scraps. The more videos I watch, the more I believe some of my frustrations with sewing may be due to the age of my machine - a ‘66 singer. In this video I loved how quick it was for you to sew two pieces together and then realized you don’t have to hold the two bits of thread at the beginning. What did the buttons you pressed at the end do?
I have a really old machine that I still use. One thing you can do before starting to sew your scraps together is to take a small piece of fabric and sew on that before feeding in your fabric. This stops the birdnesting that can sometimes occur when you start to sew.
I love the look of your crumb quilts because of how you group your colors! Gives it good coordination and a restful sense of rhythm amongst the chaos. This may sound dumb, but I really want to make something like this but I'm a new sewer and don't have any scraps yet. It would seem odd to cut up large yardage into random crumbs, wouldn't it? Do you know any tips for starting from large pieces and working them down into crumbs... other than just throwing them into a chipper/shredder, I mean?

Or you could start working on some smaller projects and start building up your fabric stash. This was a great video, I am thinking of using it to make a white wedding dress quilt with three fabrics to go with it. I am not sure if I want to do it in blocks or build the whole quilt with it!!
