- Mainline Steam trust ran a mainline excursion from Christchurch to Arthurs Pass behind streamlined Ka942 on Sunday 28th July 2013. Here is footage of the beast heading out of Christchurch and onto the Canterbury Plains. Next we head over to the Broken River Viaduct photo stop and then continued to another photo stop at Mt White Bridge. Thejn we see the locomotive being turned for the return journey to Christchurch. We head to Cass Bank where another photo shop was held and then some onboard footage heading through the river gorges. Next we take a look at the final photostop, Patterson's Creek Viaduct as the Ka does a few wheelslips just after the Viaduct. We then cross the Plains again stopping at Darfield and then one final shot heading into Christchurch. Thanks to KiwiRail and Mainline Steam for this great steam excursion. Sorry about the wind nosie in the backround in some of the shots and the people talking in the photo runbys as some people don't care about railfan's films.

Tres belles vidéos Loco Magnifique$.
This IS grande...top notch...no good saying it isn't!
As youngsters in Ireland, we always loved it when they passed by at a leisurely rate, as it provided us a great chance to bounce a few ripe tomatoes off some of the pork-pie-faced blokes who stuck their mugs out the window/door openings. Blimey, what fun!
Note the cars crossing after the train while the lights were still flashing and the arms were just going up. Shocking driving.
A common occurrence here in New Zealand unfortunately. We have some of the worst drivers in the developed world.
Beautiful views and videos
Personally I think the shroud on the front looks terrific it's funny how tastes differ
Really GR8 footage mate! Enjoyed it heaps.
Look at all that snow coming out of the funnel /
Very nice! Enjoyed that
Loved the pacing shots on highway 73
I've heard about this train trip and I'm going to do it very soon.
Beauty
awesome
7:41 a bit of wheelslip
Does the shrouding on the smokebox serve any functional purpose?
Conducter49 streamlining they tried after the war
Very good video of a great steam locomotive.
The loco seems to have good acceleration and climbing ability similar to the BR 9f which managed to run at over 90 mph with a passenger train.
What is the top speed of this loco ?
Realistically around 65-70mph, but, like all locos, some have, no doubt, run faster - only 4'6'' drivers remember - NZ locos are like miniature American locos - 3'6" gauge and tight limits.
The J class could run 70-75mph and sometimes, a bit faster, no doubt.
The JA,s with light load could do 90--95mph, they frequently did 70--75mph on the Canterbury Plains pulling 'The South Island Express' later it became The Southern with DJ diesel locos, top speed 60mph MAX!
ok now im confused now on other videos ka942 looks completely different on the face but in this video it has this face so has it had any upgrades from its orginal look or something look for urself. Nice video by the ways.
Ask Aunty Helen.
It's just it's casing that some Ka' s were fitted after the war to hide their afci feedwater pumps but in preservation those were removed
Great work mate I would upload all that but I cant due to movie maker problems
8:57 what happened
A photo stop, they've let the passengers off, backed up and done a short run for folks to get their photos, then it stops to pick them back up again.
those new westinghouse crossing bells sound pathetic, got them here in picton yea nah no!!
Only ones we have 😀
To many ding bats .
The guy at min. 4:50 was not being nice at all. Shame
What did he do?
@@peterwiremuormsby9383 He walked right in front of the person filming the train. At least in Europe this is an absolute no-go.
I'm Mexican
So anal is your forte??
Poor bugger
some of you gunzzels need to get your hands dirty, help them maintain them
Already do
I wish they would scrap that bloody ugly shroud. It's hideous & I doubt it serves any useful purpose.
can't remember any ugly shroud on them when I was a boy travelling all over the country hauled by Ka's. First impression on viewing this was that was a different train.
It's slightly aerodynamic and it hides and protects the AFCI feedwater pumps, though they were removed in preservation so this was kept for the sake of preservation
It’s funny how no one likes your comment
Your British locos can’t even get through one inch of show while our trains can easily cut through eight with no snow plow!
