I rescued this vintage bike and turned it into a fixie

  • This is a 1984 Suteki touring bike, made by Panasonic. Apparently it was sold in the Sears catalog in '83 for $500. Sound like an astronomical price for 1983? You'd be correct. Apparently it didn't sell well because the next year you could get TWO of them for just over $400.
    If all the parts had been original I might have considered restoring it but several things had been replaced over the years.
    Originally I wanted to keep the bare, brushed drop bars because I thought it was beautiful. I was also going to run the bike without brakes. Unfortunately, in this setup the bike was terrible uncomfortable and, to be completely honest, somewhat terrifying to ride. So I decided to create my own bullhorn style handlebars and reinstall the original front brakes.
    I ordered a standard avid brake lever but it didn't fit. I had to order a special level that would fit over the thicker part of the bars.
    I sacrificed some style to make this bike much more comfortable, and rideable for me. That is, because I plan on actually riding this bike. Before now I didn't really understand the whole obsession with fixed gear bicycles. After riding this bike, though, I think I might understand.
    The steel frame, albeit slightly heavy, is an absolute pleasure to ride. The bike feels planted and smooth, gently vibrating over irregularities in the road. This is one of the most pleasant bikes I have ever ridden.
    Thank you for watching. I hope you enjoyed the build.

      It's an absolute different feel of riding. It may be disadvantage for some conditions. But the overall feeling more than makes up for it. Try it, you may not want to go back to freewheeling. I first bought one with a flip flop rear hub, in case I didn't like it at least I'd have a regular single speed, I never put it to freewheel after riding fixed!

    How did you fix the chain line? I've essentially done the same thing on a road bike I found in the trash pile. I got the chain line ok by sliding the back wheel over to the right a bit, but now it is off center. It rides fine, but ultimately I'd need to redish the back wheel, which I really don't want to do. Or leave it and get a much longer back axle.

    • @DonylynKnives
      @DonylynKnives  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need a narrower bottom bracket. I got one that was like, 8mm shorter than the one that was on there. It essentially brings the crank arms closer together, because you don't need that extra room for all those gears.

    • @DonylynKnives
      @DonylynKnives  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They're pretty simple to replace but you'll probably need a couple specialty tools for it depending on what type of crank arms/ bottom bracket you currently have. Oh and I think I paid about $10 for this one.
