You actually forgot 3 very important ones: 1- seeing an empty hearse is bad luck (you might be the next one being driven in it) and to avoid it you need to touch steel or, if you are a man, your nuts; 2- giving knives as a gift is also bad luck (since you might get killed with them) and to avoid it you need to pay for the knives with the smallest amount of money you have in you pockets; in case you don't have any money in your pockets, you need to refuse the gift and then accept it when you have some; 3- the last one is giving an empty wallet as a gift: whenever you gift someone with a wallet you need to put some money in it (even a little amount) otherwise you are dooming them to a future of poverty.
Well the one about the knives and about the wallet are somewhat less known (I know them because my father is freak of these things), but the one about the hearse is very very well known (hearse = carro funebre).
I know a very similar superstition to the knives one regarding handkerchiefs. They are linked with tears so if someone presents them to you as gift (very rare nowadays cause we have paper tissues but in the past it was a thing) you should pay them or it will bring you tears (aka unhappy life).
Another way to avoid bad luck for the 13 people is to use the "dead's place": you prepare the table as you were 14 (so cutlery, plates, glasses...) and obviously one place remains vacant! At least, I've heard people doing this!!
At La Sapienza University in Rome there's a giant statue of the goddess Minerva and we say that whoever looks at her in the eyes will fail his or her exam. So at the beginning of this year I was on Facebook and some stupid page had published an article about the Sapienza and the cover image was the goddess' face with her eyes staring back! 😱 I actually fell sick that very same day and couldn't go to one of my last exams on the next day. 😭

hahaha we used to have a cleaner and she came from Romania and she was obsessed with the broom thing. She always asked me to get up from my chair when she swept because she was terrified of touching my toes with the broom and I just couldn't care less XD it's so refreshing to see young Italians speak fluent English as you can't really expect my generation to do that... I recently went to a couple of gigs with a 99% Italian audience and their attempts to communicate with us in the queue were pitiful!! did La Cla study in Canada at all? I thought I heard her go slightly Canadian on her "about", lol that is AMAZING about people not going through the middle doors even in a fire drill. I am mighty impressed you did a fire drill at all! Dalle mie parti esisteva anche "la Paura", intesa come un'entità, una "cosa" non meglio specificata che chi si inoltrava da solo nei boschi o nei campi poteva incontrare, spaventandosi a morte. I've studied at Sapienza University of Rome and we also have a superstition about the Minerva statue in the middle of the campus. According to the superstition if you look the Minerva straight in the eyes you are going to fail your exams or even worse... you are not going to graduate! Of course, I did it many times, but I managed to graduate in the end! ;) About the 13 at the table, I know another version linked to Pope Gregory the Great, for I also work in the field of tourism. Gregory the Great was a rich man who donated all he had to the church. Next to one of the monasteries he created out of his properties in Rome (Church of San Gregorio Magno, close to the Colosseum), he added a canteen for the poor. Once, while he was sitting at the table, praying God for the food, the thirteenth guest turned out to be an angel. The event was so sacred that Christians didn't want to allow these circumstances again in order to show respect to God. [Sorry for the long comment!]

Tutt'al più, se capita che due pronuncino esattamente le stesse parole simultaneamente, allora magari (se sono in confidenza e in vena d'allegria), procedono a fare "flic e floc" (con un dito ciascuno, intrecciandoli e poi sciogliendo l'intreccio), ma è più che altro un giochetto scherzoso (modernamente, anche se forse potrebbe essere un residuo di qualche antico mini rituale apotropaico, che chissà che non fosse volto a risolvere, sciogliere, un'identità sovrapposta perché forse si temeva di perdere la propria anima in quanto a rischio d'essere assorbita in quella dell'altro, boh?).

One time I said Happy Birthday to a person because i thought it was past midnight. It was literally 2 minutes before and they looked at me like if I said something horrible to her. To say 2 minutes before her actual birthday. I didnt know about this superstition then. I learned the hard way to never do this haha xoxo from the Netherlands
At the Sapienza University in Rome we have kind of the same thing as the lions in Bocconi. We have a big statue of Minerva in the middle of the campus, so it's really hard not to look at her. The superstition says that if you look at her in the eyes, you'll never graduate. Luckily it doesn't involve entrances during fire alarms.
For all other non-Italian newbies: Bocconi is not part of a weird modo di dire you should have found in your textbook but the name of the university they're attending, so "Chi passa fra i leoni non si laurea in Bocconi" translates into "Who passes through the lions will not graduate at Bocconi university".

Well we have black cats fear, not all Italians, but some think if they see a black cat crossing the street while they're in the car driving, it's very bad luck. We can't put a hat on the bed, that's sign of big bad luck, or even can't open an umbrella if we're not outside. Also we have the mirror, if we break a mirror we'll have 7 years of bad luck. To avoid bad luck, we have very strange metods ahaha. The funniest one is the men touching they're balls (I am seerious) when someone says something "unlucky" like: "You won't graduate". We also have the horn gesture with the hands, around the world it's know as a satanic gesture, or metal/rock gesture, but it's not, it's italian and it's very ancient, it's from Etruscan people, italian civilization before Rome! :) So it's very ancient and we still use that, we think it brings good luck or avoids bad luck. You can see it on etruscan tomb's statues. We usually do that with horns down, 'cause with horns up may mean that the person you're talking to is betrayed by his/her lover. A story says that the metal singer of the Black Sabbath, had the italian grandma, so he saw her doing the gesture, he liked it and began to use it in his concerts and so it started to be known as satanic/metal gesture. You can find it also in buddhism, it's positive but it's different I think.

In Pavia, close to the city center, there is a giant statue of Minerva. For university students, it's said that you must not look directly at the eyes of the statue until you finish your studies or you'll never graduate, so that's basically the first thing that students do when they finally get their degree (me included, of course).

About the "13 people around the table" superstition, it's not just an italian thing, because there's an hilarious french comedy all centered around this problem, "Tredici a tavola" (Treize à table), where a Christmas dinner is troubled by all sorts of crazy events in the effort by the housewife to avoiding the infamous number of tablemates. My granddad was very superstitious, and he just couldn't suffer to see a hat on on the bed, because it was a bad omen. And that's because when a priest visited dying people (long ago you died in your bed in your home) for the last rites, he put his hat on the bed. Talking of that, there's also the superstition that you mustn't position your bed with your feet toward the door of the room, because the dead were taken away with their feet forward (we also have an idiom: "uscire a piedi in avanti", "to go out with your feet forward", to say "to die"). And, well, there's a bunch of superstitions about specific people: like, if you see a priest or a nun it means bad luck, but if you see a hunchback it means good luck. About the marriage, we have the saying "Né di Venere, né di Marte: non si sposa, non si parte e non si dà principio all'arte", i.e. "In Friday and in Tuesday you don't marry, you don't leave and you don't start your business". That Friday is bad luck I can understand it, since Jesus died in Friday, but I don't know why Tuesday is bad luck too. And people involved in the show business avoid the purple colour like the plague, because it's the colour of the Lent, and long ago shows and plays and all types of theatrical performance were forbidden during the Lent.
In Russia we have the thing about table corner..also with the sweeping, but it means that you're getting "swept out" or like you're not gona come back to whatever place you're being swept out of.

It depends in which city you want to move, bigger is the city, more people can talk english. In anycase we're note denmark, sweden, or north europe in general ;D So, should be better if you learn a little bit of italian first. (Staying on the subject, sorry for my eng.)

Princeton has the same superstition, except its the main gates that the front of campus. There are three gates and undergrads only use the two on the sides. If you walk through the front gate before graduation you won't pass your classes.

We have a similar superstition at my University in centre Italy (Università d'Annunzio): in the middle of the campus there's a throne and you're only allowed to sit there on your graduation day. if you sit there before graduating, you won't get your degree.

Sì, è la figura del folletto dispettoso che c'è un po' in tutto il Sud. Dalle mie parti esisteva anche "la Paura", intesa come un'entità, una "cosa" non meglio specificata che chi si inoltrava da solo nei boschi o nei campi poteva incontrare, spaventandosi a morte. Credo fosse una leggenda nata per giustificare le morti per infarto o qualcosa di simile. Era abbastanza inquietante.

A Torino non si può salire sulla mole finché non si è laureati, altrimenti ciao laurea xD ahah un altro metodo che abbiamo usato nella mia famiglia era quello di mangiare in due tavole distinte, rispettivamente da 6 e 7 pur di evitare il 13 complessivo!

I've studied at Sapienza University of Rome and we also have a superstition about the Minerva statue in the middle of the campus. According to the superstition if you look the Minerva straight in the eyes you are going to fail your exams or even worse... you are not going to graduate! Of course, I did it many times, but I managed to graduate in the end! ;) About the 13 at the table, I know another version linked to Pope Gregory the Great, for I also work in the field of tourism. Gregory the Great was a rich man who donated all he had to the church. Next to one of the monasteries he created out of his properties in Rome (Church of San Gregorio Magno, close to the Colosseum), he added a canteen for the poor. Once, while he was sitting at the table, praying God for the food, the thirteenth guest turned out to be an angel. The event was so sacred that Christians didn't want to allow these circumstances again in order to show respect to God. [Sorry for the long comment!]

Tutt'al più, se capita che due pronuncino esattamente le stesse parole simultaneamente, allora magari (se sono in confidenza e in vena d'allegria), procedono a fare "flic e floc" (con un dito ciascuno, intrecciandoli e poi sciogliendo l'intreccio), ma è più che altro un giochetto scherzoso (modernamente, anche se forse potrebbe essere un residuo di qualche antico mini rituale apotropaico, che chissà che non fosse volto a risolvere, sciogliere, un'identità sovrapposta perché forse si temeva di perdere la propria anima in quanto a rischio d'essere assorbita in quella dell'altro, boh?).

One time I said Happy Birthday to a person because i thought it was past midnight. It was literally 2 minutes before and they looked at me like if I said something horrible to her. At the Sapienza University in Rome we have kind of the same thing as the lions in Bocconi. We have a big statue of Minerva in the middle of the campus, so it's really hard not to look at her. The superstition says that if you look at her in the eyes, you'll never graduate. Luckily it doesn't involve entrances during fire alarms.
For all other non-Italian newbies: Bocconi is not part of a weird modo di dire you should have found in your textbook but the name of the university they're attending, so "Chi passa fra i leoni non si laurea in Bocconi" translates into "Who passes through the lions will not graduate at Bocconi university".
At brown university it's like the same thing but with a gate instead

Well we have black cats fear, not all Italians, but some think if they see a black cat crossing the street while they're in the car driving, it's very bad luck. We can't put a hat on the bed, that's sign of big bad luck, or even can't open an umbrella if we're not outside. Also we have the mirror, if we break a mirror we'll have 7 years of bad luck. To avoid bad luck, we have very strange metods ahaha. The funniest one is the men touching they're balls (I am seerious) when someone says something "unlucky" like: "You won't graduate". We also have the horn gesture with the hands, around the world it's know as a satanic gesture, or metal/rock gesture, but it's not, it's italian and it's very ancient, it's from Etruscan people, italian civilization before Rome! :) So it's very ancient and we still use that, we think it brings good luck or avoids bad luck. You can see it on etruscan tomb's statues. We usually do that with horns down, 'cause with horns up may mean that the person you're talking to is betrayed by his/her lover. A story says that the metal singer of the Black Sabbath, had the italian grandma, so he saw her doing the gesture, he liked it and began to use it in his concerts and so it started to be known as satanic/metal gesture. You can find it also in buddhism, it's positive but it's different I think.

In Pavia, close to the city center, there is a giant statue of Minerva. For university students, it's said that you must not look directly at the eyes of the statue until you finish your studies or you'll never graduate, so that's basically the first thing that students do when they finally get their degree (me included, of course).

About the "13 people around the table" superstition, it's not just an italian thing, because there's an hilarious french comedy all centered around this problem, "Tredici a tavola" (Treize à table), where a Christmas dinner is troubled by all sorts of crazy events in the effort by the housewife to avoiding the infamous number of tablemates.
My granddad was very superstitious, and he just couldn't suffer to see a hat on on the bed, because it was a bad omen. And that's because when a priest visited dying people (long ago you died in your bed in your home) for the last rites, he put his hat on the bed.
Talking of that, there's also the superstition that you mustn't position your bed with your feet toward the door of the room, because the dead were taken away with their feet forward (we also have an idiom: "uscire a piedi in avanti", "to go out with your feet forward", to say "to die").
And, well, there's a bunch of superstitions about specific people: like, if you see a priest or a nun it means bad luck, but if you see a hunchback it means good luck.
About the marriage, we have the saying "Né di Venere, né di Marte: non si sposa, non si parte e non si dà principio all'arte", i.e. "In Friday and in Tuesday you don't marry, you don't leave and you don't start your business". That Friday is bad luck I can understand it, since Jesus died in Friday, but I don't know why Tuesday is bad luck too.
And people involved in the show business avoid the purple colour like the plague, because it's the colour of the Lent, and long ago shows and plays and all types of theatrical performance were forbidden during the Lent.
In Russia we have the thing about table corner..also with the sweeping, but it means that you're getting "swept out" or like you're not gona come back to whatever place you're being swept out of.

Not sure if this is a superstition so much as a queries quirk but the need to use a hair dryer and under shirts.
In South Italy there is a superstition about hats: if you lay a hat on the bed it's bad luck for an old tradition (this was done on a deathbed). There is also a true classic: opening an umbrella in a room.

Princeton has the same superstition, except its the main gates that the front of campus. There are three gates and undergrads only use the two on the sides. If you walk through the front gate before graduation you won't pass your classes.

We believe that if you toast using plastic glasses, it's bad luck :D But if the glasses don't touch, then it's ok.

We have a similar superstition at my University in centre Italy (Università d'Annunzio): in the middle of the campus there's a throne and you're only allowed to sit there on your graduation day. if you sit there before graduating, you won't get your degree.

In "La Sapienza" University of Rome, we have the supertition that if the day of an exam/your graduation day you look at the Minerva statue (there's this big statue at the entrance of the campus), you're going to fail because you challenge the goddess of wisdom.
In Univesità La Sapienza you shouldn't watch the big Minerva statue in the eyes!
