Fix Smok Nord with stuck pins - Taking apart a Smok Nord - How to disassemble a Smoke Nord

  • In this video I disassemble a Smok Nord that will not fire due to one of the pins being stuck down. I have never done this before, and couldn't find a tear down video so thought I'd record the process. It's not the best video ever made, but it did "fix" the vape. If you're a bit more careful and take your time, you will likely be able to permanently fix the vape without damaging it.

    SOLVED IT.
    So. I tried it. And well. The spring is broken.I pull it back up and when pressed just goes back down. So what I did was (saw it here in the comments) got a flat wire coil (colossus) and stuck it through. Theres a metal plate underneath the rubber so as long as both ends touch the connectors you're good. I kept cutting it short enough though, to make sure the pod flushes right. Get any conductor to connect both ends and it'll work. Also be careful with foil because if it touches the other pins it will short. I tried. The only way to turn it back on is if you charge it after a short. So just stick a pin through it you're good.
    Also tip, if you guys are gunna leave it for a while, take off the pod head AND the coil. Because the coil WILL stick to the pod head and you'll have a hard time replacing coils. in which case YOU WILL break the pod head by trying to force it out and have to buy a new one. I know. Because I've broken 2 heads already.
    So
    1)stick a conductor where the pin is stuck
    2) never leave the head and the coil together when not using because it will fuse together AND IT WILL LEAK.
    3) don't ever fucking buy smok again
    Hope this helps guys. I just didn't want to give up on it and justify why I spent money on it in the first place.

    I have a FIX for this:
    1)take off the sponge behind the circuit board and unscrew the WHITE plastic that protects the pins.
    2) get some sanding paper and sand down the flat part of the white plastic piece. You need about 0.6mm so it won't take long. Just make sure you apply even pressure to keep the surface flat. this will make all three pins protude 0.6mm up when you reassemble, the trigger button seems to have enough margin to allow this.
    3) reassemble or repeat if needed.
    You want the pins to move UP to the point where it no longer matters if they don't have a working spring. this means the tank will most likely not click into place anymore.
    I have permantly fixed 2 old nords like this.
    happy tinkering!

    • @davidpaceway
      @davidpaceway 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I took the time out to do this and it worked well, but because I kept sanding eventually the white piece snapped at the edges where it screws into the motherboard so be careful for that. Also between going back and forth from testing to see if there was enough sanding - the two wires, the red and black, for the usb came detached. So I'd watch for that too if your reading this. Ukno despite these issues I ran into, and my lack of carefulness, the bitch still works astonishingly lmao. (and ofc I had to solder back the wires for the charger, this was the biggest pain in the ass of all so just be careful not to make the same mistakes I did)

    My nord 2 is actually firing by itself, the vape thinks the button is being pressed. I will try this on the Nord 2 and see if I can clean the button out. I have to pull the pod because if I shut it off with 5 taps it’s very hard to get it back on because it sees random button presses.
    Update: the tape that keeps the outer button in place came off so the button was sticking to the fire button on the board, I added a small piece of scotch tape and got it working. Thank you for the tear down!

    Helpful video. I've fixed my middle-prong issue in the past by cutting a small circle of rubber out from the rubber panel around the prong. It worked for about a month but now I'm having the same issue again. This time it lights up when I slam the carriage down, as if it's making a connection, so it could just be the coil. It semi-fires, so I can still use it if I repeatedly press the fire button, but it's a bit annoying. I've had my Smok Nord vape for about one and a half years, so maybe it's time for a replacement.

    I took a very tiny piece of welding wire and I laid it down over top of that pain. My vape works now. I had watch this video and brainstormed a little more because welding wire is a conductor of electric so by laying it down directly over top of the PIN it gave a good connection

    I didn't bother reading if this was mentioned yet, but you can also swap the center pin with either outer pin. Both outer pins have continuity and connection to the neg bat lead. You'll obviously need a soldering iron, some previous experience/skill, and proper safety precautions like removing the battery before you start (keeping the leads very far apart), but so far mine is functioning again with the rubber piece intact and without modifying the pins/bridging the gap by other means

  • @JustMusic113
    @JustMusic113 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    This was extremely helpful and saved me a ton of time and headache! Thank you! I couldn't find my star bits, but suspected that the spring was broken because it wouldn't stay up. I just used needle nose plyers and pulled the rubber out from the top (knowing the thing was toast now anyway), and then did the same thing you did to squeeze the base the pin is seated in to make it stay out. I imagine it will either drop again eventually or the juice will flood the board, but it's working like a charm for the time being. What a shit design. As much as I have loved almost everything else about this vape, it's not even my main vape and less than three months old. Will not be buying another smok product.

      Same bro honestly the vape itself is such a good device but the flaws in the design eg( the pins staying down, the pod leaking 24-7,etc) make me not wanna buy smok because if u look online I’d say 80% of users have the same problems so it’s inconsistency in theyre products it’s not just like 1 in 1000 of them do it

    People at my vape shop say this is a pretty common complaint. I've had one unit do the same thing. It wasn't stuck down, the spring broke or was dislodged. I suppose if its within 6 months you can use the warranty but after that you're just screwed. So its either gonna get stuck because of leaked juice or the spring will stop functioning. So it becomes a balancing act of keeping the pod in and risking it leaking or taking the pod out when not in use but wearing the spring out.

I was wondering how to dissemble after removing the top 4 screw and got to this video feeds. Just a protip, when trying to take out the back cover there's two hinges on each side if you carefully use a blade knife and hook it out, it would hardly damage the cover nor the body paint works. They all seem to have this problem even with the nord 2, haven't had any others though. What I've been doing is putting a tiny bit of solder on top of the pin so it makes a connection. I've had to do this multiple times but I've had mine for probably 18 months now. I also discovered that sometimes the pins can get stuck from getting gunked up. On the nord 2 you can actually pull the pin and spring out (carefully) and clean them. I was able to stretch the springs out to give them life once again, sadly this doesn't work on the original nord.

I am on my THRD unit. They are great, when they work! Utter RUBISH when they don't which is usually within a couple month depending on your luck.

      I did a similar thing. You basically have 3 options with solder.
      1. Make a bubble on the copper center of your coil.
      2. Put enough solder on the middle pin to make up the difference.
      3. Pull the middle pin up half way and solder it in place. As long as the 2 outside springs still work they will adjust to the right height.
      Option 2 sucks. I did 3 after realizing I would have to modify every new coil with 1.

    I was not able to use mine for months and left it with juice. The juice leaked and the top part where the gold/bronze pin were wet for a long time. Will the juice go inside? Will it damage the system or explode? Its still working but I'm worried that it will explode. Is the top layer of those pin water/juice proof?

    I had 2 of these that both had the middle pin stuck. I tore one down, and tried to remove the center pin with a soldering iron, but before I could melt all of the solder, I somehow bridged a connection to the LED.
    I ended up ripping out the center pin on the 2nd nord (I did not take this mod apart, i just used pliers to rep it out from the top side where you would seat the pod) and screwed one of the torx screws from the 1st mod into the hole of the rubber bushing. This provided the contact needed to get it firing again!!

    I’ve found that pushing juice out from from the bottom of the coil we’re the insulator is really helps. It looks to be negative wires there that make ground contact with the side of the coil. In my experience with this little trick even stuck pins still make good enough contact. Thank my later.

      @@achannel6677 you can do that but most strong glues will become crystalline after curing and will shatter after prolonged use. Would probably work in a pinch for a few refills worth of reinstalling your pod, but enough repeated impacts/pressures on the post will likely break/jar it free again. Yo I found a fix that doesn’t require you to take anything apart. I’m not sure if it’s long-term or anything because I just did it, but I had this exact same problem with my nord 2, and after ripping the whole thing apart only to find out that I don’t have the right torx bit, it turns out that if you take a pair of needle nose pliers and basically take the pin and twist it clockwise, it fixes the issue. Before it was like the spring was completely gone but after I did this it came back. This was definitely a helpful video, but I wouldn’t recommend taking yours apart unless you can’t find ANY other way. Hopefully someone can learn from my mistake! :)

    Same thing happened to me. You don’t even have to take it apart. The problem is the middle spring is broken and doesn’t push the middle pin up. All you have to do is connect a little piece of metal to the pin so that it reaches high enough to hit the coil. Or just super glue it in place, just to the point where it is low enough for the pod to fit in but high enough to reach the coil

    Just a question, as I'm dealing with the 2 outside pins being stuck down, middle one is fine. But, knowing now how its put together, could you just remove the black rubber cover over the pins without taking it apart ? Mine just started this , like an hour ago. Of course, it's my only vape and not able to get another one tonight. This sux .. btw. I'm feelin right where you were at . Lol.

    • @peterz7072
      @peterz7072 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could but this is a death sentence for a nord. Pretty much all of them leak from the coil and the rubber is the only thing keeping the liquid from getting into the electronics. I suggest you grab very thin tweezers and wedge them around the pins and pull them out. Afterwards you can push your pod in very slowly until they just about make contact with the pins. Not ideal but there isn't much you can do other than that

    • @tombritten7841
      @tombritten7841  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you would have trouble getting the rubber out without taking it apart. It’s kind of held in from below if that makes sense? You might be able to get some tweezers in there and dig them into the rubber enough to grab hold of them and pull them up. Bit they will probably fall back down quite quickly. If you are really stuck you might just be able to do the little balls of tin foil trick. You roll up foil and put them on top of the pins that are stuck down. But again, that’s a bit of a short term fix but will get you through the rest of the day.

    • @micheleshive1528
      @micheleshive1528 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I got in there with tweezers, needle nose pliers and a couple other tools. It dawned on me that the little rubber piece was wider underneath, so that it wouldn't pull out. But, get this .. while pulling the little pins up and trying to squeeze them so they wouldn't fall back down, well after several attempts, I accidenlty pulled out one of the little pins on the left side ...I thought , welp, I'm done for now. My middle pin was fine, the one that actually contacts the coil. I put the pod back in, just to see . And it started working ! Wth ? Oh, well, it'll get me through until I can grab another, hopefully. I've always cleaned that thing out. I think maybe its time to either try to wean myself off ( with this whole ban of flavored vapes starting to happen) or go back to E-leaf ( They last a hell of a lot longer, but are more expensive)

    honestly the vape itself is such a good device one of my favourite hitting devices I owned 2 Nord 1s and A Nord 2, but the flaws in the design eg( the pins staying down, the pod leaking 24-7,etc) make me not wanna buy smok because if u look online I’d say 80% of users have the same problems so it’s inconsistency in theyre products it’s not just like 1 in 1000 of them do it
