Because that’s kind of what it looked like did and was wondering if that was why they let it stand.. and probably tough to judge exactly where exactly he jumped from. Also, does part of your body still need to be behind the scrimmage if you jump across/over it to throw? Can you jump an inch behind the line and travel a yard in the air and throw it from there? lol.. just genuinely curious of the rule with this.
It's all about the QBs feet. If any part of any foot is touching the line of scrimmage during the throw then it's an illegal forward pass. Even if the foot is barely touching the line it's still illegal. To answer your question about their body being across the line. Yes it's legal as long as both feet are behind the line of scrimmage even if an arm or helmet crosses the line before the throw. It's very rare that it ever happens but I've definitely seen a few plays reviewed where the QB's arm and helmet are across the line but it's legal because of his feet being behind the line. Just like a catch being legal if it's caught out of bounds as long as the receiver had both feet in bounds while making the catch. It looked like McCarthy definitely threw an illegal forward pass for the one touchdown in question. IDK why that wasn't reversed by the refs.
The receiver was out of bounds and barely touched the ball right before the michigan guy intercepted it, so the play was dead once the out of bounds receiver touched it.
He didn't really look that good, not sure if it was just early OL struggles, but even his cuts and top speed were lacking. Take away his one 30 yarder and its a pedestrian day for him. ECU was pretty good at defending the run as well.

That means, you can have your entire body but one inch of your foot behind the line so long as the ball itself is not past the line of scrimmage. JJ's entire body and the ball were past the line of scrimmage when he made that pass so I really don't get how it was allowed to stand, even a huge % of the stadium (I was there) were visibly and audibly confused as to why the play stood after review.
