I don't mind JRPG's that are long and there 2 reasons.
    1.NG+ for more replay options.
2.If you are on a tight budget and you can only buy one game. You have to buy one game that can last you one or two months tops.

This is something I've been thinking about with two of my long term projects. As a story maker first, programmer second, and artist last, my priority has always been on learning to design replayability and variety role playing. I liken RPGs to reading a long book. Also taking system performance and affordability into account. Being from Latin America, I've noticed our dramatic story telling and adherence to superstition and spirituality isn't much different than Japan's. However, I would lean more towards a Miyazaki styled game (like how they did with Ni No Kuni), rather than what Nomura does, even though he's the golden boy right now for Square.

These long JRPGs are good if you're young, had a lot of free time and low on money, but sadly as you grow older, time is a luxury.

Totally agree, this was the longest, most boring and generic jRPG I have ever played, way longer than DQ8. More than 120 hours of a slog with basically doing the whole game twice, what a mess of a game. It should be number one on the list, or at least replace DQ8. DQ8 also being a huge game felt 10 times faster and more enjoyable than this endless repetitive bore fest.

If you play Dragon Quest VIII the way it was meant to be played meaning not skipping battles, exploring everything, using recipes, doing sidequests like the monster arena, and kill a bunch of metal slimes later in the game to prep you up for the final boss you don't have to grind. There is only one point in the game where you DO have to grind a bit (again if you have played the game the way it was meant to be played) and that is before the main fight with Doulmagus.

    • @palaguin
      @palaguin 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Agreed. If anything, the monster xp given kinda stops benefitting from grinding. Grinding prior to Dhoulmagus so Angelo gets to lvl 30, and then don't bother to grind until you can kill metal king slimes.

A game that provides a satisfying ending to one of its chapters makes me want to drop it, as I feel like I got closure.
This has happened to me in so many games, like Tales of Graces F, that I didn't want to play the additional content, or in Tales of Arise with the defeat of the last Lord, so I never got to play the second half of the game.
In a game like Agarest with 5 generations, I doubt I could play it in its entirety.

For DQ8 the BEST BY FAR version is the 3DS. It adds content, quests, dungeons, characters, items and most of all a cool system of photo quests that make you go hunt for rare monsters, naturally points you to sidequests, make you look for little secrets and all while rewarding you with a lot of items you'd have to farm 0.% drop rates to get in the ps2 version. By doing the photo quests you end up fighting monsters and naturally farm.
Btw for DQ games i apply a rule for myself to gear up my team every 2 villages, makes you farm a bit and always stay on the right curve.

The words 'grind' and 'farm' are as fundamentally intrinsic to jrpgs as water is to a fish. You do your time, plant the produce with blood, sweat, and tears, and watch it blossom into something beautiful. I remember spending 300+ hours in DQ7 for ps1 and got my first F in school because i was playing it so much at night...but that was by and far one of the most satisfying jrpgic experiences ill ever have.
If youre like me, you hard grind with a direct goal in mind. Personally, I love the thought of not just beating enemies, but crushing them (when you first hit 9999s in an Ff title fir example...you know the feeling.
Lengthwise, long jrpgs feel like a fantastic journey in which you have to pace yourself, just like really traveling to faraway lands. It CAN get exhausting. It CAN get tiring. But if youre focused on your goal...saving that particular world, changing a misfortunate future etc...its not so bad. In the longer ones, you simply have to pace yourself.
I remember the ps1 days...where id open up the box and see 3 and 4 cds...and id just smile to myself. "Huh...looks like its gonna be a loong journey." Those....are the ones to genuinely cherish.

I'm so torn on Persona 5, it's both one of my favourite JRPG of all time yet one that I would struggle to replay or recommend due it it's length. Honestly the only thing I kind of don't like about the series was that since it was creating an immersive world where the map is cemented in stone it meant certain games like sky SC, Azure and Cold steel 2 would reuse dungeons and environments from the last game. I finished cold steel 3 the other month, the only thing I could complain about was the dungeons weren't very creative apart from the 1 towards the end where you have 3 parties which was okay but compared to some of the highlights of the other games, it was kinda average.

It's a JRPG-wannabe live-service game made by Chinese weebs, to be more precise. That live-service, always-online thing is possibly a big reason as to why why the game has that issue of unskippable story dialogues & cutscenes. Without the existence of save/load file like those found in the usual offline RPGs, all those dialogues & cutscenes can no longer be viewed again unless you register another account and redo everything from scratch. And they appear to be SERIOUSLY taking utmost pride on the game's story to the point of making all those long-ass dialogues & cutscenes they've crafted unskippable for us players, as if the story always matters regardless of whether you liked it or not.
Imagine dying unexpectedly to a storyline boss and then as you retry, you have to rewatch the ENTIRE pre-battle cutscenes that lasted quite a while without being able to skip all the way through to the actual boss fight. I've never experienced it myself, though, due to my near-placebo progression on the story, so I can't confirm if it really is a thing or not. If it is, then I totally can't accept it.

    • @ElsweyrDiego
      @ElsweyrDiego 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@HAVOCprojectsthe problem is almost every other rpg with live service have skippable conversations, so it's not a issue. and many others have a option to rewatch every cutscene and conversation. the huge size of Genshin Impact (in gigabytes) is because of the voice archives. so it's all there, they can put an option to see everything when you want. they just don't want to do this.

I think long games aren't for people who wants to rush.
By rush I mean like having this mindset -> I just want to finished it already so that I can move on to the next game on my wishlist
You'll end up suffering especially if you're also too curious to be able to skip it with ease too.
It's for people who wants to feel their money's worth, and don't feel the need to rush it.
I think some people actually appreciate the longer games more even if it has useless conversations in it. It makes them more attached with the useless banter. Then they're probably end up feeling empty or the blues after finished it.

The only way to do this and not take 200 hours grinding is to farm Metal King slimes. Let me tell you that is some of the most fun you will have in gaming (thick sarcasm)

Haven't played most of these games, but I can still agree with many of them.
Dragon Quest in my opinion is not welcome at all, so even 5 minutes is overstaying.
    Ditto for Persona.
Instead of Agarest War, I played some of Agarest War Zero. Less generations, but same idea.
I think the first 2 God Eater games story got additions over time. They didn't have DLC back then, so the expansions got released as new versions. Nonetheless, judging now I can agree that they were too long. God Eater 3 was different to me though. I wasn't too long and it was way more fun than the previous games.
The rest I just don't really know much about.

Surprised that Fate/Grand Order is not on this list.

I go to the dedicated material grinding stage, got like 1 or 2 of the material(that one needs a ton of) in like 10 runs through. And no autobattle. That has been years ago, so I can only assume it got many times worse since.

Then there's a certain raid boss in Lostbelt 7 where you must bring pretty much ALL your characters against it because the boss absorbs them after each fight and makes them unavailable for the rest of the raid. Not a friendly boss battle for casual players.

I don't mind long games as long as they are good. FFXII and Xenoblade Chronicles are 2 games I could put in hundreds of hours and enjoy myself.
I think Xenoblade was more of a skill issue for you though. The blades can all be had pretty quickly if you understand how. You can equip chips that improve core drops for example, which you can farm using the combo system. You can get lots of cores by exchanging experience too - experience is very easy to acquire in xc2 by farming the end-game bosses. The non-rare blades do have uses too with the merc missions. Even leveling the blades can be very fast using the merc mission feature. Ursula's affinity thing is very grindy, true, but the entire point of it is to mass-level the affinity trees of all of your blades.
Regardless, all that stuff is optional in XC2 and you don't need to use any of it to beat the game, which I thought was one of the criteria for your list since you seem to mention the main story a lot for the other entries on your list but you focused a lot on the optional stuff here. Most of the story blades are actually the best ones too, which means you don't need to engage with the random cores at all. You don't need KOS-MOS or anything to beat the game and most of the rare blades are actually worse than the story blades. Hell, you can literally beat the entire game with Mythra/Pneuma, and Poppi, Brighid, Pandoria, Wulfric, Herald, Crossette, and Corvin are all super strong and are all gifted to you. Shulk, Fiora, and Elma are all earnable/gifted in the post game as well. That is literally 80% of the best blades in the entire game without using the random cores.

Persona 5 Royal has got to have the longest story in any game I've played. It's an easy game, so I haven't done much grinding or sidequests...I'm not even done with the original story yet, and I'm on the cusp of 100 hours. Insanity.
I'd also add Shin Megami Tensei IV to this list, just because the Neutral route forces you to do so many quests that it turns a 50 hour game into a nearly 80 hour one.

Dragon Quest VIII is the only DQ game I've ever played that isn't Rocket Slime and I never beat it. I got stuck on the late Dhoulmagus fight and I felt I had to grind even more than I already had to even stand a chance, so I never went back despite mostly liking it. I only just started XB2 a few months back and I don't know if I'll go back to it despite really loving playing XB:DE for the first time last year. I feel I've completely forgotten most of the tutorial info and yet I feel there's still way more to come. The Blades, while cool in concept, seem like a needlessly convoluted progression system for what is ultimately just a collect-a-thon or should I say collect-a-mon.

Yeah the Xenoblade Chronicles series sucks for grind. You are either too weak and miss every attack or too strong and the game is just waiting for your group to finish the fight. One was probably the best in terms of letting you do combos while 3 I love how you get 7 party members but wow it was awful to grind. Story wise not that good and 2 like rex sucks. The dlc for 3 was the best in how short it is and quickly you can beat it.

Any game that lasts more than 30 hours overstays its welcome with me, unless it's something special.
    So basically anything that has:
    Grid based combat
    Monster collecting
    Job systems
Unnecessary crafting systems (i.e. not an Atelier game)
    An abundance of minigames
Empty open world with repetitive activities
    Absolutely anything involving cards
    Etc.
    - is all but guaranteed to overstay its welcome with me, with rare exceptions. I'll give them a shot, but I know I'm coming in with extremely negative bias.
That said, most of the examples on your list were those special exceptions to me.

Congratz on the channel, you have overall great videos. But I have to completely disagree on Cold Steel III, I played all 4 cold steel games on a row, and I have to say, CS3 was such a great improvement over the first 2. Not only because it uses a better engine, but I mean the overall take on history and character. Characters from CS3 are much better developed than the ones in CS1 and 2. Altina alone has one of the best character developments I've ever seen on JRPG, that alone is reason enough to enjoy the whole game!

For me a problem of Cold Steel 3 final stretch is that you do a long ass dungeon beat a big ass difficult boss, you believe you already finished the game and then some stuff hapeen and you need to do another long ass dungeon really in a really short time span than the last one.
