As a retired Fire Investigator in North Dakota, I've had my share of experiences with the JD 9600 series combine fires. If you know your combines as well as you seem to, it doesn't have to lead to catastrophic endings. You took action and emptied the hopper, moved off the field, parked next to a water source and explored the inside for hot spots. You discovered the bearing failure that gave you the first audible clue of something was wrong and took action. And you saved the dog! Farming with machines require use of all ones senses, eyes, nose and ears. Back to work in about an hour! Alert Farmers are the best! Good Luck in the future and continue to be the best.

It sucks you had this happen to you but I’m kinda glad it was you because it was a) extremely informative and b) you you handled that extremely well. Very fast and calm, properly executed and well thought out. Hopefully it’s a quick and easy fix and there’s no major damage. Overall very impressed and it’s just another reason why I like watching your videos.

I grew up on a farm in Oregon, and we had two field firers (wheat) that were the result of combines catching fire. Some of our crops were on fields that were on hillsides (foot of the mountains) and we had two combines that had leveling systems made for hillsides. One was an older international 503 hillside with automatic self adjusting, and one was a IH 453 with self leveling (sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't...it had a level bubble that you manually set as you drove). The 503 caught fire (bearing on the shaker) the drive belt melted causing the dust to ignite. The 503 didn't have a cab, only a large tarp so it was easy to smell the smoke. Part of our safety equipment was a back pack water system that you could pump up and spray water through the nozzle. This put out the fire!
The next fire was on level ground and involved our TR75 New Holland. It was late in the day and I was going to open this quarter section cutting the short end. This field was entered off an alfalfa field thank God! I made a cut next to a fence and turned around started back. My brother brought a grain truck and was waiting in the alfalfa field. When I was about two hundred yards from the gate, he started running towards me with a claw hammer!! He jumped up the ladder and opened the cab door and said the combine was on fire! He said that I was dripping burning material that was falling onto the wheat stubble! I immediately drove the TR75 through the gate into the alfalfa. My brother was following the small burning spots and used the claw hammer to dig up and put the fires out. I shut off the TR75 grabbed the backpack sprayer and followed my brother! Thank God there was no wind and the stubble was fairly thin on the edge. We got those out and headed for the TR75. A bearing went out on the fan and the belt melted and dripped on a rubber dust flap that was supposed keep dust from collecting. That's what dripped burning rubber on the wheat ( thank goodness we got the side of TR75 put out!) The biggest problem was the fire went up the side headed for the fuel tank. There wasn't much open flame, but the dust burned like a cigarette and was burning behind the cab and near the fuel tank lines which were plastic. My brother had the back pack so I took the seat out and took a bunch of plates and saw the burning and we could put out the fire!!
Another fire was from a grain truck that had accumulated wheat on the muffler and exhaust pipe and this started a wheat fire that was really bad. We always had a tractor hooked up to a heavy disc by our fields, and that is what put the fire out. We lost only about 30 acres, and saved the rest!
This the longest comment that I have ever done (LOL) I think I need a nap!
    Lyndon

Doesn't matter whether you own the farm or are just a worker because it's a massive advantage being able to recognize problems before they become disasters.
That's what I took from this video besides your level headed approach in covering all your bases in your action plan.
    Bandit thanks you too.

Props for keeping a cool head, and not freezing up. 3-4 years ago we had a similar fire issue where we almost thought we were gonna lose one of our combines. We have an R72 Gleaner that had a bearing go out on the rattle chains behind the feederhouse going up to the rotor, started everything on fire from the feeder house to the rotor and was spitting it out the spreader in the back, even worse is dad was almost full, he slammed it in 3rd gear, was barking things out on the radio and started for the slough on the edge of the field while I ran under the auger with the grain cart. Meanwhile my big brother and one of his friends that was running our trucks for the day stopped my R62 combine he was running, and started grabbing every fire extinguisher we had in the trucks, combine, or service pickup, grabbed my pickup and started flying across the field. My uncles yard is about a mile or so away right at a T crossing that leads to the prarie trail our field is at, and they saw the commotion that was going on and turned on their radios to our channel. We had some family visiting due to one of my cousin's racing semi pro motocross. That cousin (according to my aunt) just jumped his race quad out of the back of his pickup, no ramps or anything, ran over to the shop and started strapping fire extinguishers on his nerf bars with tarp straps, and left the yard like a bat out of hell, different cousin who has dirt track modified's ran over to his little garage where he keeps his cars and duct taped like 6-8 fire extinguishers he could steal off their equipment and also left the yard wide open. My uncles grabbed one of my younger cousins, stuck him on a loader tractor and hooked him to our water tank, while the one uncle that farmed grabbed his water trailer, and the other ran down to our yard and snagged our old tender truck we use for spraying. While they were doing that we had the combine finally empty (thank god for Gleaners quick unloading augers) I jumped off the grain cart tractor ripping my 2 water extinguishers off the cart and tractor step and basically shoved it in the feeder house and duct taped the trigger open, and started ripping off feeder house covers, by that time dad hopped off, and my brother and his friend showed up and they started ripping side panels off. Never have seen my chubby 30 year old brother move so fast in my life, when he scaled the combine ladder and up into the grain tank unlatching all the access panels for the rotor. By that time, motocross cousin screams into the field and starts unstrapping fire extinguishers and we throw them up into the grain tank. But then we realized we didnt have anymore extinguishers for the feeder house so him and I yanked the big weighted access cover off the bottom of our feeder house and he starts ripping burnouts to throw dirt in there. Other cousin gets there with race car and starts ripping more extinguishers off and he grabs one and starts spraying up into the spreader and the sieves, while I'm up in the engine compartment with that big access cover open spraying into there as fast as my water pressured extinguisher would let me. Finally my uncles and little cousin show up with the water truck and trailers and we basically flooded the entire inside of the machine with water. If it wouldn't have been for visiting family, my brother coming out for the weekend wanting to help, his buddy that's never really seen a farm before other than when he works on semis and trucks for the shop that him and my brother work at, and my uncle and his family that farms taking that day a little slow due to company. Along with my dad being smart and always making sure our water trailers and pressurized water extinguishers are full and working when harvest starts. I dont think we would've saved that machine if anything turned out different, we were very, very, very lucky. Just cooked the paint off the inside, melted some easy to fix rubber seals, cooked like 8 different bearings, melted the rubber accelerator rollers, and the rubber ends on the spreader. Dad told me afterwards if we couldn't have saved it, he was just gonna shove the combine into the slough with the cart tractor instead of letting the whole countryside burn up, we were in the middle of a drought and everything was really damn dry, wheat somehow survived off the little sprinkles of rain we'd get and the fact that its by a creek that feeds into a slough.

You mentioned in conversation with your dad that there had been discussions on how to react in case of a suspected combine fire. It is good practice to reacquaint yourself with safety practices and how to handle emergency scenarios as you move from machine to machine. We used to call them tail gate sessions when the team would review the hazards they would face in that day's work. It seemed boring and was repetitive, but it refreshed everyone so they could know how to react if needed. The best benefit is it put the issues in mind, and hopefully, you never have to deal with the consequences.
Good video and show of how to handle an "event."

Had the same exact thing happen to me last year on my 9770 sts and turned out to be the wiring harness in that same location was grounding out where it goes into the separator area. The wires where the ones going to the separator loss sensor. Thankfully our volunteer fire department was quick on the horn and saved our machine also!

Great save. And I agree with the not blasting a radio while operating equipment. I'm a truck driver, never operated a combine YET (some day when I win the lottery, I have a plan that involves trying my hand at every piece of equipment I can get into 😎)
While I listen to the radio during my day, it's not up super loud. I'm in tune with the truck, every noise, every vibration, everything. I become one with the truck. This has saved my butt and my employers butt on a number of occasions. Cuz I'm aware when something happens.
    Great job, great video.

My adrenaline sure got in gear watchin this. Cpl yrs ago my 9760 STS was smoldering inside the cone shaped deal the rubber straw spreaders bolt onto. Little holes at the top had allowed fine dust & ground wheat straw to sift down into the steel cones.. one side was over half full of smoldering crap. We like to never have found where the heat was comin from. Evidently the bearing was gettin a little warm but not near ready to lock down. We finally grabbed the temp gun after the rest of the machine had cooled down. Next day I bought one of those hand held temp sensors to carry on every tractor & pickup. Your 9660 is a nice clean machine. Glad you didn't lose it.

I used to have a 9670 sts, and it would start smouldering like that at the back of the rotor in beans, put the fire out, blew it out inside and out with an industrial compressor, finished soybeans, went on to corn and wheat didn't have an issue, the next year start on soybeans and it started smouldering again. Turns out it was the two wires on the rotor loss sensors that had rubbed through and were touching, so I went ahead put new wires on it and have never had an issue ever since, all the symptoms were the same except for the funny sound, luckily you caught it!!

Would probably have totally panicked, forgot everything I needed to do and ended up watching the combine AND the grain go up in flames, never mind being able to stop it from happening and then be able to go again an hour later with another combine!! I am in awe in how quickly you reacted, the fact you followed all the right steps needed to stay in control of the situation and then got on with the day like it was business as usual!!

We had a International 1460 that was bought new in 1976. Sometime in the 90s it caught fire and burnt. We were too far from a water hose so we could try putting it out. We found later that the front rotor bearing had gone out. It always got greased everyday, but still, it can happen! It was a Beast of a machine too.

As someone who has ran these machines for 1000's of hours, and ran john deere combines since the 95b, as a custom harvester, I know what burns them.
A bearing fire isn't a big issue inside, you have time to put it out. Engine fires are the problem. We actually carried 30 gallons of water on every machine as the engine bay fires were so bad. I got into the engine bay at night while the machine was threshing and found the problem. The exhaust was throwing big chunks of what looked like charcoal on fire out onto the machine. We ran the exhaust out the back along the side of the unloading auger. This stopped the engine bay fires, however we started setting the wheat fields on fire.
Finally I figured out where the charcoal was coming from. These machines use a device on the exhaust to create a vacuum and a hose that connects that vacuum unit to the engine air intake pre-cleaner.. the pre-cleaner pulls the big debris out of the engine intake air stream. I found that unit on the exhaust stopped up with dirt and debris and the hose running to the precleaner full of small pieces of straw and dust. The heat from the exhaust was setting that debris on fire and as it burnt down it would break loose and enter the exhaust stream.it was then blown straight up in the air and land in the engine bay ...we learned to blow clean the exhaust unit every morning, and blow the hose out connected to it. We never had another combine fire. I promise you, if you check that exhaust vacuum unit on any combine, you're gonna find charcoal in it.
That don't mean you don't have to blow the radiator clean every morning and the trash that accumulates around the exhaust sytem..

Well done! Excellent quick thinking too! :)
For me, I kept an ear and eye out at all times for my car, I noticed my oil gauge twitching when turning left or right, turned out it was time to get an oil change, after the oil change, didn't twitch at all.
For my car's engine, I noticed it's temperature was rising in a minute and rising quickly, even in hot or cold weather, then it was passing the midway point and almost into the red, I quickly shut off my car, held the clutch in and left it in gear (so that I don't damage the transmission and that the geartrain can still be lubricated while making an emergency stop.)
I had to wait about two hours to let the engine cool off gradually than all at once, I used my cheapo OBDII scanner to monitor the engine temps until it got down to 80F (bare minimum or rather so it didn't boil) and then I was able to remove the radiator cap to carefully refill it with water.
After refilling it with half a gallon of water, it purred like a kitten and never overheated again after that.
Scarlet (my car) is like a sister to me, she was there for me and she was my first car that I got back in 2018 after I graduated High School, and that car refuses to quit on me, and in general. She's a badass 98 mustang with a standard 5 speed and a 3.8l v6. Man I love that car. Put on about an extra 205,000mi on the odometer since I bought 'er for $1200. Money well spent. B)
I have no clue how to be a farmer, but if I were to work for y'all on the farm, I'd try to design a fire-resistant sprinkler system that will spray water in key areas in the combine as a preventative measure, because y'all help feed the country and I'd want to help repay the favor, y'all deserve the best and most of all: Lives matter. I want y'all to be safe.

    • @dextar5k
      @dextar5k 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Douse the entire interior with water, then, if you find the actual source, use the fire extinguisher if necessary. If you have access to a water hose, you likely have way more water than you do fire extinguisher, so it's best to reserve it for when it's really needed or is needed in a certain area.

Ben, Combines can be replaced. YOU CAN'T BE. When it comes to fires.. Your MORE important than any farm equipment.
Just glad you were able to dial in and recognise the trouble signs as most combines are well ablaze before the operator even knows what is going on.
Just glad to see you and your Dad are OK and that the combine has not changed its color to a shade of Blackish grey.

Lots of guys here have water tanks and fire hoses on the fields. Even with that Combines can burn up very fast. Tanks are more to control the fire from spreading in most cases.

Seems to be a lot of equipment fires during harvest season. Probably would be good to invest in a used 5,000 gallon water truck with 1-1/2" water hose filled up and ready to roll at a moments notice any time tractors/equipment are in the field. Luckily where I live, we have a manned fire house 8-miles away and three volunteer stations within 5-mile radius, all of them with large capacity water tenders.

Knowing something is getting hot or starting to burn is scary, no matter where you are be it a vehicle, building, equipment etc and as soon as its detected the clock has started..... Find it before it finds you and hopefully it can be dealt with once it is found.
Thank God you were able to do what was necessary to save other valuables and get to an ample supply of water before things possibly got bad.

Failed bearings are the most common cause for combine fires . I've been in one that caught fire before as well Our 9870sts caught on fire during bean harvest in 2012. we use a water filled fire extinguisher for on our combines they work better than a hose for reaching inside the machine. Next time forget the GPS monitor and get the head off and park the thing fast . Your life is more valuable than that monitor and combine but You kept calm and survived. Great video !
