I was waiting for them to hit marshes and bogs as they did in this segment. I live in Louisiana relatively close to New Orleans and we have miles of track that had to be floated over mud.
It was quite an achievement to do what they did. Sadly the same couldn't be said about the way the roads were constructed down there, a right mess! I take it with a name like Doherty you have some Irish blood in you? :)
The Irish Mainline Yes, the family was originally from Donegal and left in the 1700s if I remember. I have never been to the other side of the Atlantic though. It appears the railways in Donegal were pulled up in 1959. I guess a lot of people continued to leave. I had watched a TV documentary called THE DUFFY'S CUT about Irish workers being imported for railroad construction in Pennsylvania. Apparently, 57 died under mysterious circumstances. There was coverup, because the railway didn't want to hurt its recruiting effort in Ireland. The list of names had Dohertys in it. Thanks for posting the IRONING THE LAND documentary.
Wow that's sad if your ancestors were caught up in that. Id' say working conditions were pretty grim over there back then, most workers had a very short life expectancy :( I'll have the final part of this series up later.
Been looking for this series for ages! Thank you very much.
