Probably because none of the editorial staff understands how a double clutch gearbox works. Or they do and don't think we will. Either way, pretty disappointing video.

I was hoping to find out how it actually works and how some general operating hints but I did find the video amusing, especially the reaction of the riders after trying it.
I'm going to try a DCT bike next week (VFR1200 Crosstourer Highlander) for the first time. I found another video about this bike which explained how to operate the two automatic modes and the manual mode.

  • @michaelggriffiths
    @michaelggriffiths 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

An honest review from from a Honda NC700 X dct rider:
Way smoother than a manual, smooth gear changing when changing UP. Changing DOWN however is clunky. In manual mode you can control when it changes UP, but not when it changes DOWN. This is a problem on corners.. You enter the curve in the right gear, get your speed right, look through the curve and then BAM it changes down and destabilises you. Really annoying.
It's also a problem in the ice, here in the UK we get a lot ice on the roads in the mornings, when you spot a patch you automatically slow down (who WANTS to die??) But then the dct changes down which produces engine braking which is very difficult to control.. With a clutch you can pull it in and glide over the ice.
So in short: fabulous idea, supreme about town and in the city... but can kill you in the ice and corners.

I enjoyed this video because it brought down the stereotype of what a motorcycle is suppose to be. I have a Honda NC750X DCT and I absolutely love it. I can ride a clutch bike, but prefer the ride on the DCT. It is absolutely a matter of preference, and anyone who puts that down needs psychiatric help, in my opinion. Nice video, bud!

I’m a proud owner of Honda Africa Twin DCT . I’m using it since last 2 years and rode around 30 k . Before that I had Harley Fatbob I was so scared about it’s braking when cruising around 100 /120 plus then I tried AT it was like the bike which I wanted. For so long I tried BMW 1200 GS also BM is also good bike but Honda AT is more nimble and agile and yes with DCT bike won’t stalls at all when you are doing off-roading as well . Thanks to Honda DCT .👍

This explained nothing about how a single clutch manual or a dual clutch transmission actually works. The cartoon graphics were overly simplistic to make it hard to figure out that they were actually incorrect representations how a transmission works; what was represented as a clutch in the first graphic would actually be the shift forks, not the clutch.
They took people who already agreed to try the bike off camera and gave them scripted reasons that people give for not want a DCT bike, then they made fun of them for being old school. Likely, all are actors and none of them ride motorcycles (notice no footage was shown of them actually riding bikes).
And I actually like dual clutch transmissions. When I bought my VW GTI in 2009 I test drove a manual transmission car and the dual clutch (VW DSG) one. The DSG felt like manual transmission where I didn't have to use the clutch, because it doesn't have a torque converter. The I would have bought the DSG car, but it was $1000 more and I was trying to keep payments reasonable. That said, once proficient with a manual I prefer a manual, because it does give me more control. If a manual shifts rough or hard its because of me, not because the transmission has something wrong with it. A manual shifts when I want it to and stays in gear when I want it to, not when a engineer determined that was the best time, rpm, torque, load, or mpg for it to shift.

DCT did not originate in Formula 1. Formula 1 cars have never used dual-clutch transmissions, on single-clutch sequential gearboxes.

I am driving one but my second bike is a standard and I like it too. It is especially beneficial on big displacement 6 speed hwy bikes that you also use as a commuter. If we are talking 5 spd torquey better in the city under 100km rides I still prefer standard.

Kinda forgot to mention, besides how awesome it is and how better it works, that it's also 10-14 kg (depending on the model of bike) heavier than the manual. As if the manual VFR1200X, for example, wasn't already heavy enough with its 275 kg.

Cool tech but I'm still a manual clutch guy. Cars and bikes if it doesn't have a manual to row when I'm shopping then I am not interested. In fact, the main reason I don't have a new 50-60 thousand dollar pickup in the driveway along with my cars is because they don't offer any of the good engines with a manual gearbox. I've wanted to add a pickup to my collection for a while now, I've tuned a few of the new Ecoboost 3.5 F150s at work and they make insane power; like low 13's to high 12's in the 1/4 mile with just intake/tune/exhaust power. (In a 5000lb chassis mind you) But they don't offer a 6 speed manual to row! This is why my Honda's and Mustangs don't have a big new truck brother. Some of us do still like a clutch and a shifter!

I love dct on big bikes... I’m short so, even though I like manual, when I’m concentrating on keeping the bike upright ant maybe unexpectedly have to use both my feet... well maybe I’d enjoy not having to worry about the shifter. I was riding a bike with a seat 89cm high and when I stopped on a pavement slightly slanted to the right, I could only put my left foot down... I had to give throttle and release the clutch very gently and take of in second gear...
On my duke 390 I love the manual transmission though... because it’s a manageable bike. I hope that when I’ll be old and feel like getting a 1200gs they’ll offer it dct loaded, otherwise I’ll get a Honda crosstourer

I have only ever ridden Vespa scooters in my life, never a motorcycle, one main reason being that I like the ease of changing gears just using my left hand, and the idea of using my left foot to change gears just never appealed to me. But now I am ready to try a change in transport and really fancy a motorbike instead of any current scooters. So is a DCT motorcycle the way forward for me? Does DCT mean no foot changing of gears? Any positive advice welcome thank you.

How long before they fail and start miss shifting like all Dsg/Dct gearboxes have done in a lot of road cars? The Tech is great when it works, but could be disastrous on 2 wheels when it fails or miss shifts.

Okay, so most here are critical of this Honda ad. Fair enough. I'm guessing, though, most here haven't actually ridden a DCT equipped bike. (Aprilia builds a comparable 850cc Mana, BTW.) If you offer an opinion not based on actual experience, that says more about you than Honda. Many bike manufacturers offer big tourers and baggers with automatics and no one considers those to be "scooters" or less of a motorcycle. Fact: If you don't want a DCT motorcycle, no will force you to buy one.

I am 75 (yoa) & ride a Yamaha FJR but at my old age & only 5'7" & 150 lbs the FJR is getting a bit big & heavy for me - thus I'm downsizing to a 2022 750X (DCT) which should be at the dealership August 31st (+/-) - to say I'm excited would be an understatement as years ago I had a 2012 700X along with another FJR & loved that little bike which I took from Florida to California & back without a single problem - I would like your opinion & knowledge & thus a question(s) if I may - I have read that going into a curve sometimes the DCT will downshift at a point where the bike is already into the curve which takes the rider by surprise - do you find this to be true ?? - when in mountain curves do you use the manual paddle ?? - I'm up in the North Georgia, North Carolina & Southeast Tennessee mountains at least 4 times every year thus my inquiry - also what do you mean when you say I've learned from the bike - any & all knowledge will be greatly appreciated - I thank you.

Having owned cars with dct and ect for the past 15 years. I don't think I will ever trust those on a bike. The number of times the computer decided to change gear mid corner or at other unwanted and unexpected times is scary. The car has 4 wheels esp and whatnot to help prevent you from fucking up. I wouldn't trust one of those things to not throw me off the bike in a situation like that. I'll just stick to cvt for automatic bikes.

I am personally not a fan of DCTs in motorcycles unless it would be strictly a commuter of maybe a massive huge touring rig. For a sporty fun motorcycle or a dual sport/adv bike I think the DCT creates problems and adds a weight penalty in the process....For instance the Africa Twin is something 35 pounds heavier than the manual If you are going to give up that much advantage in weight I believe there are better solutions that could be engineered in....For instance I would love some type of Rekluse like clutch with a switch to turn it off when it gets in the way....and/or how about using quick shifter technology along with electric shifter that also can be turned on and off....the best of all worlds FULLY automatic transmission controlled by computer that can be switched completely off in an instant! I bet that would even weigh way less than the dct too....WHY is no one offering these??

I think everyone should try it and, if you don't like it, kick it old school if that's what you prefer. Most car guys no longer think driving an automatic car makes you a a loser. Who gives a sh*t if you don't think riding a DCT is riding a real motorcycle. Get over yourselves.

Have you ever tried to borrow someone's (stick) car and they know your car's an automatic? They will tell you to eat shit and die.

I was just speculating the other day when/if Honda would replace the Silver Wing scooter. This seems to be it. Built-in locking storage? Check. No manual shifting needed in jammed traffic? Check. Sharp and modern looking? Check. Efficient? Check! Looks like more fun and better handling too. Add a top case and tail bag and it's a sport-tourer. I want one.

I got one on my honda quad bike and it's fun. but it must have more basic software cos it will shift in the middle of a corner. if that happened on a bike 'you'd have a real fucked up day'

I like all sorts of bikes, dirt bikes, sporty's, standards, nakey's, cruisers, ..and yeah scooters ... but this in not a scooter by any stretch. If you are not defined by some contrived motorcycle identifier, then you'll consider the possibility that this bike is indeed a motorcycle. I tried a friend's, and I like it. It's different yeah, but not so much different than the difference between a sportbike and an all out cruiser are different. I say, so what ... since when is different a bad thing, if it wasn't for "different" everyone would still be utilizing the old school suicide stick shifter ... amongst a long list of motorcycle innovations that wouldn't have existed, if it wasn't for that word, "different".

LOL. We can love it or hate it but auto gearboxes are the future. I don't understand why some people consider a auto motorbike a kids toy or a scooter, after all whats wrong about scooters? I ride both manual and auto (variator) motorbikes and both can be fun if you know how to ride it and take advantage of its carachteristics. In stop and go traffic inside city limits even the most powerfull left hand starts to become tired of the clutch lever...

+farmoboy83 I remember back in 1980 Honda came out with a 450 automatic with reverse. I could see where reverse would be much handier on a big bike like a Goldwing. T'would make manouvering in a parking lot much easier.

Jeremy D how are we the stubborn ones when the world outside of America holds their ground on manual way more than us? Only our toys are manual and I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Motorcycles are for the most part considered toys here too.
