      The majority opposition party gets 1 parliamentary question per month which goes to a vote. Labour asked the question tories voted for continuing our rivers being polluted

      Tell that to the Tories who despise "regulation". They won't do anything, they know who they work for and it's no us.

      The tories have been opposing doing anything to fix this. The environment secretary just jokes about it.
      This is tactically a good move. This vote gives the tories a a simple choice. Vote to end sewage dumping in the sea or show the voting public that you are absolutely opposed to cleaning up their seas. Neither choice is what the tore will want to do

      every raw sewage discharge needs to have an automatic financial penalty, no loopholes, just fixed fines for every single offence. Private companies only care about profits. Make it unprofitable to discharge raw sewage and the problem is fixed

      3. 3 years. Because Philip Dunne only became involved 3 years ago and it wasn't on ANY politicians radar regardless of party affiliation prior to Dunne.
      What's happened is, for more than 60 years of Labour, Tories and Lib Dems no one has done anything about this issue. No one has even thought about it in the last 20 years. Until Philip Dunne.
      He made a big thing about it and insisted something be done. Now something is being done Labour and Lib Dems are engaging in politically grandstanding that it isn't enough when they haven't had any policy on this for the last 60 years and they wouldn't make the changes they're grandstanding on if they were in government anyway.

    Dont give the Water companies any leeway!! The only way to fix the problem is by fining every single sewage discharge made by the Water companies. The current legislation allows a percentage of raw sewage discharge, and the water companies use the full percentage regardless if actually needed

    • @jeffsterling2809
      @jeffsterling2809 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Exactly, make it illegal. Foreign-owned water companies will always maximise profit rather than pay extra to responsibly care for our environment. They're not a charity. They won't pay to upgrade and repair infrastructure unless forced.

      @@jeffsterling2809 I don't think it matters whether they are British or foreign private companies. They all think the same way, maximise profits and use all possible loopholes available to save operating costs. That's the problem, allowing some raw sewage discharge into our rivers and coastline without any consequences is not acceptable. There are rare occasions during heavy prolonged rainfall when sewage discharge is inevitable, but the data shows most companies are using this loophole to their full advantage, saving money by purposely discharging raw sewage when it could be processed as usual,

    Dumping sewage anywhere not designated for it should be illegal and should have massive fines associated with it that cannot be weaseled out of. As long as the water companies can get away with failing to fix leaks and dumping sewage with no consequences to their financial bottom line they will continue to do so. Unfortunately these companies DO NOT care about anyone other than their investors and owners, and they in turn care about their bottom line far more than doing what's right

    On Thursday 20th November 2014, for the first time in 170 years, #UK #parliament has debated the creation of #money. Few people know that 97% of our money supply is created not by the #government (or the central bank), but by commercial #banks in the form of #loans.
    As the results of our recent poll show, most MPs lack a sufficient understanding of money creation. A worrying number of our #MPs do not understand where money comes from. This leaves them ill-equipped to predict another #financial crisis, deal with rising debt, #housing bubbles or understand a fundamental driver of #inequality.

    What is going on with these two women in the report? They know raw sewage is being dumped, they continue to swim through what they know to be raw sewage then gleefully exclaim "We swam through other people's sh**!" followed by laughter. Do they not actually comprehend what they're doing, or what?
    It's always so unhelpful when someone sees a privately held business making profit and says something dumb like "we can use those profits to fix the problem". Back in reality, any costs you impose on a privately held business will be passed to customers directly and those profits won't be impacted. If anything they'll use the whole exercise to raise prices higher than needed to cover the newly imposed costs to increase profit further. Understanding that reality is key to dealing with private industry. Anyone claiming you could force private business to pay through their profits is out to lunch and has no business being in government.
    Utterly appalling that for 60+ years this has been going on and it's only in the last 3 that anyone has thought to try to resolve the issue. Disgusting political grandstanding today. Good on Philip Dunne.
