Captain Vijayant Thapar was just 22 when he died braving the enemy on the icy heights of Knoll and Three Pimples in Drass. Now, 21 years after his death, his life has been chronicled in a book, ‘Vijayant at Kargil: The Biography of a War Hero’, written by his father Col VN Thapar. The co-author is Neha Dwivedi.

He was not only a brave soldier, but also a person with great moral values.. his thoughts about life, his future planning..his wide thinking of life after his demise that he expressed in his last letter.. I wish I could have learnt more about him. Respect sir!!

The narration by Col. V.N. Thapar brought tears to my eyes . What a courageous father , hats off to him . What an illustrious son he brought up . I bow my head in reverence , respect and the highest of gratitude to the brave family members of the martyr . There cannot be a bigger and greater sacrifice than this . The entire nation ought to be grateful for this . Nothing can take away the pain except the fact that one day each one of us has to leave .
I still get tears in my eyes each time I see the video where his mom is making kheer for his son on his birthday. What a brave individual he was, what a charm and personality he had. I salute to his bravery and courage. Jai Hind !
I've followed colonel Thapar since the Kargil war. Before he used to trek a pilgrimage to Kargil for his son's death anniversary. Robin sir is also always in my heart.
Meanwhile, I remember me collecting money and tablets to donate during Kargil war. He eventually protected me, my family and many others like that of yours. Though he gave up his life for my family, neither he nor me know each other. Life is not about earning money but respect at the end of the day and he is one who got the obvious.

Whenever I hear these kind of stories... I cry... It's huge responsibility to protect our country and inorder to do so we can't imagine how many families are devasted. Although war is not a good option but needed sometime for country as we love our country more than ourselves... But still there are so many stories unsaid.. Left in middle and never completed. My heart sank with hearing all these stories.. It take huge courage to be an army man. But it take more courage to be a family part of army man. Can't imagine what these families have gone through

It’s sad that these young folks get killed in a combat . Seriously if I had a family or a responsibility behind me then I would not consider a career in armed forces because there is risk of life .

To those who think the shell martyred him, the shell was unlucky for Pakistan. Vijayant lost his way in the fog of war, and took hours to reach Knoll with his squad again. Once in the battle, he met the subedar amidst the firing, and was told that his senior, Major Padmapani Acharya, is no more. Vijayant got so angry, he rushed and captured the second bunker after the first was captured by Maj Acharya, who was posthumously awarded Maha Vir Chakra. He was killed by grenade. Vijayant moved to the third bunker, fighting in the open like a Lion, but at an unfortunate moment, a Sniper got Vijayant in the head. But his valor inspired his men who went up and won the battle. Vijayant was conferred the rank of Captain posthumously and was awarded Vir Chakra.
