Jordan has said this movie has to do with spectacle. They never try to kill the monster, they try to take a picture of it. The TMZ biker begs for his camera facing death. A chimpanzee massacres actors in an empty tv studio. i also like how the theme of a ‘bad miracle’ relates back to jupe. he was miraculously not hurt by gordy (many theory’s for why he was spared), which was a miracle. however, the miracle became a curse when instead of dealing with his trauma, jupe decided to commercialize it instead (joking about the snl skit about gordys rampage, building a room dedicated to gordys home and charging people to see it and spend the night in it), until he eventually he decides to try and ‘tame’ another wild animal, believing that because gordy spared him, he could also tame jean jacket (as it was later dubbed by OJ). but instead his hubris led to the deaths of about 40 people, all because of the miracle that happened to him as a child.

I think the main theme of animal entertainment is interesting. The film touched on how people owning dangerous animals as "play things" is interesting. The same way the monkey is deprived of its natural habitat and loses it is similar to how the alien is used to entertain people until it too, loses it and devours 40-ish people. Both beings are unpredictable predators that should not be used by humans as stage pets. They cannot be controlled no matter how many times they appear to be domesticated. They are wild creatures that should not be used in entertainment spaces. As the TV-show rampage shows, they are still primal and do not want to be entertainment fodder for humans to enjoy

Not only did it explain why the Jupiter's Claim manager thought he could "trust" the alien, but it was also a direct correlation and foreshadowing to the whole story. The Alien and Chimp were both animals being "trained" for our entertainment, and both of them got pushed too far and snapped. Both of them then get killed with a "pop" after retaliating as well. (Also, both the alien and the chimp killed if you looked them in the eyes, hence the boy not being killed because the tablecloth covered up the monkeys eyes)

EXACTLY. their father literally has a line toward the beginning of the film that's "i guess some animals ain't fit to be trained." I feel like it was so necessary and so obviously commenting on what happens when we try to hold wild animals to the moral standards of human society, along with the scene at the very beginning with the horse getting spooked on set and kicking back at the people. you don't train an animal that can kill you, you enter an agreement with it.

Before looking it up I could just feel this film originally had a crazy long cut, and Peele confirmed that the first cut was 4 hours. I desperately want a directors cut. Maybe not a four hour version, but 3??? I mean I can just feel that Barbie Ferreira and Steven Yeun had more stuff originally. And the only complaint I have is the pacing of Act Three feeling way slower, and I think because that was the most preserved part of the original. If 20-25 minutes of film was added in both of the previous acts this feeling would be eradicated. THAT is the epic I want.

Nicole. It really wasn’t. This movie has a million dollar ad campaign and I’m wondering how many of these accounts are trying to hold onto the notion JP is a “genius” merely because he casts how he casts.
It was pretty average. Maybe below.
The theme is simple. Exploiting what people should not. George Floyd came to mind. Both sides used it as a lightning rod.
Covid too. The way many people saw this alien object (virus) and used it for gain (political).
It’s really nothing that’s not be alluded to for decades now. You’d be better suited looking into the symbolism of the Wizard of Oz, fwiw, in regards to World War 2.
It was really about a 2.5 out of 5 film. Losing points for a mucked up narrative about a floating shoe. And a rather anticlimactic ending in which the entity implodes due to non organic consumption.
YES. I understand the narrative. But the problem is the director tries TOO hard to pack all these ideas into 2 hours. This would have been a fine starting point for a deeper exploration of all these constructs, but instead many get lost in too many themes.
In 10 years, people will look back at this and say that, I assure you. It’s certainly not a classic or even a top 10 or 20 movie of the year, unless you want to see a reminder of all the exploitation humans under take on a regular basis.

    • @UrbanDecayLova247
      @UrbanDecayLova247 ปีที่แล้ว +155

In terms of the “let’s film it” thing, that was really one of the few critiques I had. Certain times in the movie, it is very evident how your average black person would handle some of the events in the film, with a simple “Nope” and walking away or staying where they are…but I felt Peele could’ve done a better job at getting the audience to understand why getting the shot was something the leads were willing to possibly risk their life over.
This video helped me conceptualize it, in terms of how weird grief is, and I can only imagine how hard that process could be if someone you love dies in an unexplainable way…makes more sense to me now but I felt this could’ve been communicated better actually within the film somewhere - even if it was just one extra scene added to convey it.

the point of the third act going bananas with the action is because the structure of the film is ripped straight from Jaws. Nope is a commentary on spectacle and there is no better film that exemplifies that than Jaws, the first block buster movie. it's very appropriate that it copies Jaw's basic narrative structure, with the first 2 acts being a tense horror monster film and the final act being a bombastic epic action sequence. (even the cinematographer guy is basically the same character as Captain Quint in Jaws, and Em kills Jean Jacket the same way the shark is killed in Jaws, tricking it into eating pressurized air so it explodes)

I completely forgot about how much of Kaluuya's character drive is from the fact that his father died out of nowhere, and this alien clearly was the reason for his death. and the movie actually did a great job of repeating the theme without making it obvious, to the point that i completely missed it until you mentioned it. the shot of him looking at the quarter once he starts thinking their might be alien was so subtle yet so brilliant. and it contrasts with yeun's character's trauma of watching gordy go ballistic and then dealing with the trauma/grief by trying to control it or think it is his friend. that adds a level of depth to the film that i hadn't considered, and makes me like it even more. if they developed the cinematographer even more along those themes (like a family member died before he could get the perfect shot that he had promised), i think that would have perfected the film a lot more and made that character's through line less out of place

it's kind of an easy moment to miss, but the cinematographer pops pills before he and angel are getting ready to shoot film. A few things help subtly establish the motivations of the old cinematographer:
      1. Renowned cinematographer now busy shooting commercias
      2. Obsession with videos of predator and prey
      3. Popping pills and coughing.
He was probably dying, and with a whole Moby Dick angle. He wants to get the impossible shot before he goes, a last hurrah. Perhaps after getting the "perfect shot" of Jean Jacket's underbelly as OJ baits it, his obsession with predator-prey videos leads him to realize that the true perfect shot is an immersive experience-the perspective of the prey. I imagine he wanted to live it, and criticising others that they "don't deservethe perfect shot" because they don't see it like he does, not risk things for his obsession like he does. Perhaps his final moments is him realizing it's the perfect lighting, taking the shot for the sake of it. Then again it's all a bounch of perhaps.

Interesting thing about this movie is that it’s mostly not really a horror movie - more a mystery sci-fi in the first half, then an adventure in the last half- but at the midpoint it briefly transforms into one of the most deeply disturbing horror experiences I’ve seen recently.

This film just makes me think of the word classic, just classic movie tropes but done differently, and it’s an instant classic. I know it’s not but this film just feels like a western to me. the perfect goal of just getting the shot and the scale growing as the threat of the unknown becomes greater and greater throughout, the score and visuals scream western, and the ending is the most perfect ending ive ever seen, this is the most satisfying movie I have ever seen and have never had an experience to rival this.

So happy for the NOPE praise, I’ve seen some reviews where it’s clear the point was missed. I understand if someone doesn’t like the film because they find whats being explored to be uninteresting, the issue I see with most reviews are that they complain about a specific part of the film feeling unfinished and disconnected to the main narrative. I highly encourage anyone who feels that way to either give it a second watch or what an explained video. The movie isn’t ultra complexed but is a lot less straightforward than his previous works and most blockbusters. The film is trust it’s audience to really digest what’s going on thematically and narratively. One of my favorites for sure.

  • @isaiahvoss

    Spoilers who didn't see Nope:
I loved Nope. It was a great spectacle to see in theaters. I had to go into the theater with an open mind to know nothing. The Bible verse in Nahum was the whole plot of the film. The characters I really liked and the atmosphere where it took us. The chapter titles are like a homage to Stanley Kubrick, the comparisons to Close Encounters Of The Third Kind and Jaws and of course that Akira slide. What really surprised me was how it was suspenseful as it went on whether Jean Jacket was a ship or in this case its the alien as the ship itself. The brother and sister dynamic between O.J. and Emerald is chemistry I haven't seen in a while. O.J. is just reserved as he knows what he's doing while Emerald is loud but she also coincides with the fact they have to get the Oprah shot. The side story of Gordy and its opening shot with him left me speechless in a while. It was mysterious because Gordy just kept beating and killing people but with the connection of the alien. The shoe saved Ricky's life as a child as a hidden message to go through grief and trauma and then sell it off as he did with the connection of the UFO. Everything else about it I still thought about for days after seeing this film. At first I thought it didn't add to the story until I digested it more as I thought about it with what you see that you shouldn't look up to. It's a movie that's second place to Get Out. It's poster is what got me to watch this movie. I'm glad to see this in theaters. It's near the level and simplicity as Get Out. It was meant for the theater. Bravo to Jordan Peele.

Because, like one of the themes of the film, she had moved on to the next big thing, forgetting what was behind her.

I absolutely loved this movie. And I loved it so much that I went to rewatch it on IMAX. I haven’t had a movie fill me up with so much suspense in so long. Upon rewatching you catch a lot of things that you wouldn’t otherwise (such as the radio talking about missing hikers, and the fact that the opening scene where the cast is introduced is literally on the mouth of the creature).
I honestly don’t really understand why there’s so much disdain for this movie, or why so many people feel as though the Gordy scenes are out of place when it is made very clear that this movie is about spectacle, and the underlying trauma that lives within said spectacle.
I also don’t understand why some people think that the portrayal of “Aliens/UFOs” is underwhelming, when personally it really subverted my expectations, and tied thematically with the training/taming of wild creatures.
Now to add my own theory, I feel as though there’s a chance that Jean Jacket might not even be an extraterrestrial, but instead a sort of cryptid. It occurs to me that Jean Jacket’s final form resembles that of a biblical angel, and I find that those said “bad miracles” had some influence from Jean Jacket. I could be completely off base but that’s immediately what I thought of as I can’t imagine Jean Jacket necessarily being from a different planet.

NOPE is a present in itself. it's the kind of movie that has you thinking about it long after you've seen it. so many underlying messages and little secrets scattered about. it's quite literally the eeriest, most unsettling movie i've seen in a long while. its as if its a puzzle that can't be put together till you've watched the movie entirely. then it's up to you if you want to look deeper. gather the pieces. there is no assuming what is what while watching. as there's a twist at every corner, and a message in every sentence and scene that you won't quite understand till later on. NOPE kept me on the edge of my seat, horrified me, and had me going: "OHHHH" for the rest of the day. a psychological thriller, yet in your face. i've loved jordan peeles past work with US and GET OUT, and i share the same opinion for both of those movies as i do this one. all special in their own way. yet with NOPE i find it's just another beast entirely. to say it's amazing would be an understatement. in my eyes, not only did it live up to peeles past successes, but surpassed them as well. peeles twist on "horror" movies is something i've fallen in love with. hard. he continues to consistently make incredible thrillers unlike no other in its class. he's absolutely killing the game.

I thought it is as a metaphor for Black Americans standing up against the oppression they’ve faced in the film industry for years, literally and figuratively having their work cast aside or written off or changed or replaced. But at the same Time it can be about our dependence on technology to a detriment or about cruelty to animals or about making a movie. It’s genius
