It’s great for the kids and I love the grounds . But I prefer the ruined castles . My favourites so far : not marketed well Linlithgow castle (just outside Edinburgh )and it’s so inexpensive to enter it may as well be free. The park around it is beautiful for picnics or spending half a day. They had tweens dressed up in period clothing giving us historical context . Despite it being in ruins it’s a vast site . I really felt transported back in time. Urquhart castle in the highlands , we went in spring and got breathtaking pictures. Be warned this place can be busy with tourists , so if you go in high season then go very early in the day , or the last couple of hours of opening, just so you can get picture without ppl photo bombing them. Also it is expensive to enter , the shop isn’t cheap either. But I loved the castle so much I’d be willing to pay the entry fee again I’d visit both places again in a shot, Linlithgow I can visit very easily , but it’s been closed as are most “historical sites”, for pressing renovations apparently. I have a feeling they will update them and make it expensive to enter . Then of course it will be heaving with tourists in summer
