the BEST way to control your property is to place as many traps as possible on your property for at least two weeks checking for new holes every other day. I do this as a service in my neighborhood and have been for 7 years. It is not difficult to do. You can buy the traps at Home Depot called Easy Set by Victor. Just make sure that the trap is set at a hair line trigger. And that it is placed deep inside of the hole and anchored down so the gopher doesn't back peddle and you loose your trap. The visible tunnel will initially be about 5 inches deep then will split in two from left to right. So just cut back the hole with a shovel until you expose the main tunnel. If you don't then the gopher will know that the trap is in the way and will simply back fill and the trap will not even be triggered. So now you can set two traps, one in each side, doubling your chance of catching it. The trap should be deep enough where it is barely visible to you. I usually attach a key ring to the part closest to you and anchor it down with a flag. Leave the tunnel open and check every other day for two weeks. The open hole is the lure. They want to protect the tunnel from predators and the elements. Remember to put as many traps out as possible or rather reasonable. I say reasonable because if the traps are closer than 10 feet from one another then the gopher may figure something's up and might go somewhere else on your property. Happy Trapping!

Dang! Leaving nothing to chance ~ way to go! Plants in baskets with landscape fabric and gopher wire. Love how you put the plant marker under the screen wire, too!

I like your idea but what stops a gopher from coming right up to the plant and eating it?

Gophers and moles do not like straying from the openings of their burrows. I have never experienced the problem you describe.

I am trying to find a way to get rid of my gophers. I thought about hardware cloth and I see that's what you're using. Whatever I'm trying to stay away from anything that's galvanized aluminum, because of the chemicals leaching into the plants. A lot of studies have been done about aluminum and Alzheimer's.

Won't say chemicals from the wire basket leach into the plants, that always scares me. Especially cuz I want organic.
