So, there's a funny story about why Emil Jellinek chose to name the car after his daughter Mercedes. So he used to get these cars from Carl Benz, modify them and use them as race cars. But after the accident that killed his driver, him and Carl made modifications to make the cars lighter (just as mkurugenzi explained).
So when the next one was delivered, he decided to take it on a road test. He asked his wife to join but she refused. Then her daughter agreed to ride with him on that road test. To him that was a show of great faith. So he chose to honour his daughter. Otherwise we could be having the wife's name, or even his, and not Mercedies.
